This article reports a multi-point curvature sensor system based on multiplexed optical fiber Fabry-Perot interferometric (FPI) sensor devices and a microwave photonics interrogation technique. The FPI sensor is fabricated with the assistance of a capillary tube, where a short section of the capillary is sandwiched between two single-mode fibers, forming the airgap Fabry-Perot cavity. Bending of the FPI device leads to changes in the fringe contrast of its reflection spectrum. Based on the microwave photonics filtering technique, variations of the fringe contrast are encoded into the changes in the peak magnitude of the passband in the frequency response of the …

This paper discusses a Bond Graph (BG) Structural Analysis Toolbox developed in MATLAB® (MATSAT) that performs causal analysis on the BG and assists the user in the sensor selection process for a multi-domain physical system. MATSAT contains modules for performing the Sequential Causality Assignment Procedure (SCAP) and Causal Path Search (CaPS). The modules can be combined to check for structural properties such as structural observability (SO) for any sensor set. The working of MATSAT is shown for standard systems. Verification of SCAP, CaPS, and necessary and sufficient SO conditions is shown.

Continual Reinforcement Learning Formulation For Zero-Sum Game-Based Constrained Optimal Tracking, Behzad Farzanegan, Sarangapani Jagannathan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This study provides a novel reinforcement learning-based optimal tracking control of partially uncertain nonlinear discrete-time (DT) systems with state constraints using zero-sum game (ZSG) formulation. To address optimal tracking, a novel augmented system consisting of tracking error and its integral value, along with an uncertain desired trajectory, is constructed. A barrier function (BF) with a tradeoff factor is incorporated into the cost function to keep the state trajectories to remain within a compact set and to balance safety with optimality. Next, by using the modified value functional, the ZSG formulation is introduced wherein an actor–critic neural network (NN) framework is …

This paper presents a novel hybrid learning-based optimal tracking method to address zero-sum game problems for partially uncertain nonlinear discrete-time systems. An augmented system and its associated discounted cost function are defined to address optimal tracking. Three multi-layer neural networks (NNs) are utilized to approximate the optimal control and the worst-case disturbance inputs, and the value function. The critic weights are tuned using the hybrid technique, whose weights are updated once at the sampling instants and in an iterative manner over finite times within the sampling instants. The proposed hybrid technique helps accelerate the convergence of the approximated value functional …

This paper presents a data-driven approach that adaptively tunes the parameters of a virtual synchronous generator to achieve optimal frequency response against disturbances. In the proposed approach, the control variables, namely, the virtual moment of inertia and damping factor, are transformed into actions of a reinforcement learning agent. Different from the state-of-the-art methods, the proposed study introduces the settling time parameter as one of the observations in addition to the frequency and rate of change of frequency (RoCoF). In the reward function, preset indices are considered to simultaneously ensure bounded frequency deviation, low RoCoF, fast response, and quick settling time. …

The proliferation of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology in the automotive industry has quickly promoted its use in many emerging areas in smart cities and internet-of-things. Compared to other sensors, like cameras and radars, LiDAR provides up to 64 scanning channels, vertical and horizontal field of view, high precision, high detection range, and great performance under poor weather conditions. In this paper, we propose a novel aerial traffic monitoring solution based on Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology. By equipping unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with a LiDAR sensor, we generate 3D point cloud data that can be used for …

Modern aerostructures, including wings and fuselages, increasingly feature sandwich structures due to their high-energy absorption, low weight, and high flexural stiffness. The face sheet of these sandwich structures are typically thin composite laminates with interior honeycombs made of Nomex or aluminum. Standard cores are structurally efficient, but their design cannot be varied throughout the structure. With additive manufacturing (AM) technology, these core geometries can be altered to meet the design requirements that are not met in standard honeycomb cores. This study used a modified aluminum honeycomb core, with increased surface area on the top and bottom, as the core material …

Following a traumatic brain injury (TBI), excess reactive oxygen species (ROS) and lipid peroxidation products (LPOx) are generated and lead to secondary injury beyond the primary insult. A major limitation of current treatments is poor target engagement, which has prevented success in clinical trials. Thus, nanoparticle-based treatments have received recent attention because of their ability to increase accumulation and retention in damaged brain. Theranostic neuroprotective copolymers (NPC3) containing thiol functional groups can neutralize ROS and LPOx. Immediate administration of NPC3 following injury in a controlled cortical impact (CCI) mouse model provides a therapeutic window in reducing ROS levels at 2.08–20.83 …

Magnesium aluminate has the spinel structure along with good mechanical, chemical, and thermal properties. Magnesium aluminate has a wide range of applications including refractory ceramics, optically transparent ceramic windows, and armors. Its low dielectric permeability and low loss tangent enable its applications for integrated electronic devices, as well. In this paper, MgO and Al2O3 powders were mixed in a one-to-one molar ratio and calcined at temperatures ranging from 1500 to 1800o C to produce phase pure spinel. Thereafter, pellets were crushed and treated in a planetary ball mill for 60 min to obtain a fine powder. All …

Zirconium carbide ceramics were prepared by carbothermal reduction of ZrO2 and C that were mixed by high-energy ball milling. Powders were milled for times from 0 to 120 min in air. As milling time increased, the surface area of the powders increased, indicating significant particle size reduction. Milled powders were reacted at 1600 °C and then densified by spark plasma sintering at 2000 °C, which was sufficient to convert the starting powders to zirconium carbide. Unmilled powders did not reach full density. Milled powders reached full density, but ZrO2 impurities were found for specimens prepared from powders milled …

A serious risk to the production safety of coal mines is coal dust. The wettability of coal may be successfully changed by adding surfactants to water. However, the creation of very effective dust suppressants is constrained by the lack of knowledge about the microscopic interaction mechanism between coal dust and surfactants. In this investigation, we explained macroscopic experimental phenomena from a molecular perspective. The lauryl polyoxyethylene ethers (C12 (EO)n, n = 7,15,23) were selected. The macromolecular model of anthracite with 55 different components was constructed. Surface tension experiments and hydrophilic lipophilic balance (HLB) calculations showed that the ability of surface …

An ultra-sensitive optical fiber humidity sensor based on an extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer is proposed and experimentally demonstrated in this paper. the Fabry-Perot cavity is constructed by a section of humidity-sensitive metal-paper coil and an optical fiber end face. Taking advantage of the hydrophilicity of the metal-paper coil, the cavity length of the Fabry-Perot cavity varies with humidity due to the deflection of the metal-paper section. the fabricated sensor shows a linear response to relative humidity (RH) spanning from 50%RH to 73%RH. More prominently, an ultra-high sensitivity of 32.5 μm%RH (change in cavity length/change in RH) or 63.5 nm%RH (wavelength shift/change …

Bidirectional CLLLC resonant dc-dc converters with an asymmetric tank can narrow the switching frequency bandwidth required to meet the asymmetric voltage gains in the two directions of power flow. Consequently, higher power density and efficiency may be feasible. in this paper, a CLLLC resonant converter with asymmetric primary and secondary capacitances is investigated for charging and discharging the next-generation 900 V traction battery of an electric vehicle. First, a new voltage gain equation is formulated using the First Harmonic Approximation. Then, the proposed gain equation is used to design the asymmetric resonant tank. the effects of asymmetric capacitances on the …

This paper basically concentrates on providing some significant steps for congestion management of the power systems based on an interval-Based robust chance constrained transmission switching (IBRCC-TS) approach for decreasing the congestion of the system while increasing the robustness of the system against uncertainties of the wind turbines. However, the utilization of TS approach in the power system is a severe challenge, since there is no limitation over the switching rate during a certain timespan in the network as well as the power switches' failure uncertainty. Besides, the frequent switching by the TS method decreases the switch maintenance and puts the …

This paper examines the impact of virtual impedance control in an inverter-dominated microgrid (MG) system. the goal is to provide a clear understanding of Virtual Impedance (VI) control toward MG stability. This analysis is performed by developing the system's Small-Signal Model (SSM) and studying the poles' trajectory change when the system's key control parameters are varied. the results indicate that VI will benefit system stability when considering MG with low X/R while negatively affecting MG with high X/R. Also, there is a trade-off between the coupling impedance of the inverter and the VI parameters, which needs to be considered when …

Prediction And Optimization Of Tower Mill Grinding Power Consumption Based On Ga-Bp Neural Network, Ziyang Wang, Ying Hou, Ahmed Sobhy
Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Grinding is commonly responsible for the liberation of valuable minerals from host rocks but can entail high costs in terms of energy and medium consumption, but a tower mill is a unique power-saving grinding machine over traditional mills. In a tower mill, many operating parameters affect the grinding performance, such as the amount of slurry with a known solid concentration, screw mixer speed, medium filling rate, material-ball ratio, and medium properties. Thus, 25 groups of grinding tests were conducted to establish the relationship between the grinding power consumption and operating parameters. The prediction model was established based on the backpropagation …

Accurate measurement of interfacial heat transfer during casting solidification is crucial for optimizing metal solidification processes. The gap between the mold wall and the casting surface plays a significant role in heat transfer and cooling rates. In this study, two innovative fiber-optic sensors are employed to measure real-time mold gaps and thermal profiles during the solidification of A356 aluminum in a permanent mold casting. The experimental setup consists of a specially designed mold system made of unheated, uncoated tool steel, which facilitates easy installation of the fiber-optic sensors. An Extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometric (EFPI) sensor is utilized to monitor the evolving …

The most common scale-up approach for gas–solids fluidized beds is based on matching the governing dimensionless parameters. In the literature, this approach has been validated only by means of measuring global parameters between different sizes of fluidized beds. However, such global measurements are not sufficient to depict all the interplaying hydrodynamic phenomena and hence verify the scale-up relationships. Therefore, to assess this approach, an advanced gas–solids optical probe and pressure transducer measurement techniques have been applied to quantify local hydrodynamic parameters in two different sized fluidized beds. Four different sets of experimental conditions were designed and conducted to examine the …

Development of smart sorbents that can be regenerated when triggered by external stimuli such as magnetic field can overcome the poor energy utilization of the current sorbents investigated for light olefins/paraffins separation. In this work, we report the development of novel magnetic sorbents comprising of MOF-74 crystals and superparamagnetic Fe2O3 particles in a core–shell structure, and assessment of their C2H4/C2H6 separation performance. The electromagnetic properties of the materials were tuned by varying the Fe2O3 (Fex) loading (x = 1–20 wt%), and their effects on adsorption …

Boron-containing materials are efficient catalysts for the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane to propylene, proceeding via radical intermediates. The radical mechanism is initiated by the solid surface and propagated in the gas phase. It has been hypothesized that the propylene selectivity could be increased by enhancing the gas-phase contributions by favoring the formation of iso- over n-propyl radical intermediates. Indeed, whereas n-propyl radicals can be converted to both propylene and ethylene, iso-propyl radicals yield exclusively propylene. In this contribution, we explore 3D printing to structure the hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) heterogeneous catalyst with high void space. 3D-printed hBN monoliths were found …

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) often exhibit an exceptional adsorption-based separation performance for a variety of gases, ions, and liquids. While most radioactive iodine removal studies focus on the capture of radioactive iodine from off-gas streams, few studies have systematically investigated the effect of structure-property relationships of MOFs on iodine removal performance in the presence of interfering ions in liquid solutions. Herein, we investigated the iodide ion (I-) adsorption performance of two model MOFs (e.g., Ni-MOF-74 and Zr-UiO-66) in liquid phase as a function of iodine concentration (e.g., 0.125 to 0.25 and 0.50 mmol/L) and adsorption temperature (e.g., 25 to …

Using microwave irradiation, PtCo alloy nanoparticles were deposited within a few minutes on COOH-functionalized MWCNT supports. The obtained catalysts were used for selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde, a reaction whose products are widely used in various fields. In the selective cinnamaldehyde hydrogenation to cinnamyl alcohol, microwave-prepared catalysts (generically, PtxCoy-MW) outperformed a catalyst prepared by the conventional method (Pt1Co2-con). The highest selective hydrogenation to cinnamyl alcohol, 89%, was obtained using Pt1Co2-MW, while Pt1Co2-con showed a selectivity of 76%. Characterization results confirmed that the microwave prepared samples …
