Closing The Modern Irish Municipal Wastewater Phosphorus Cycle, Ciaran O’Donnell Jan 2023

Closing The Modern Irish Municipal Wastewater Phosphorus Cycle, Ciaran O’Donnell

Theses

Phosphorus (P) is an essential life-supporting nutrient for which there is no substitute. P naturally cycles within nature. Modern farming practice and food production have altered the natural P cycle. Successive crop harvests remove P from the soil as crops and transport them to urban areas to feed the population. To replace P removed from the soil through these crop harvests, mineral P fertilisers are applied to the soil to sustain crop production. Mineral P fertilisers are derived from finite phosphate rock. The European Union does not have an indigenous supply of phosphorus rock, which poses a significant issue for …

Synergistic Effects Of Microplastics And Organic Foulants On The Performance Of Forward Osmosis Membranes, Mitra Golgoli, Mehdi Khiadani, Tushar Kanti Sen, Amir Razmjou, Michael L. Johns, Masoumeh Zargar

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Microplastics (MPs) are emerging contaminants that are abundantly present in the influent and effluent of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Forward osmosis (FO) is an advanced treatment technology with potential applications in WWTPs. The presence of MPs in WWTP effluents can contribute to FO fouling and performance deterioration. This study focuses on FO membrane fouling by MPs of different sizes, and the interactional impacts of MPs and Humic acid (HA) (as the most common organic foulant in WWTPs) on FO membrane performance. The synergistic effect of combined MPs and HA fouling is shown to cause higher flux decline for FO membranes …

Influence Of Three-Dimensional Printing Parameters On Compressive Properties And Surface Smoothness Of Polylactic Acid Specimens, Hamed Bakhtiari, Mostafa Nikzad, Majid Tolouei-Rad

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

While the mechanical performance of fused filament fabrication (FFF) parts has been extensively studied in terms of the tensile and bending strength, limited research accounts for their compressive performance. This study investigates the effect of four process parameters (layer height, extrusion width, nozzle temperature, and printing speed) on the compressive properties and surface smoothness of FFF parts made of Polylactic Acid (PLA). The orthogonal Taguchi method was employed for designing the experiments. The surface roughness and compressive properties of the specimens were then measured and optimized using the analysis of variance (ANOVA). A microscopic analysis was also performed to identify …

Lost Circulation Control During Drilling And Completion In Complex Formations, Chong Lin, Arash D. Taleghani, Chengyuan Xu, Zhenjiang You Jan 2023

Lost Circulation Control During Drilling And Completion In Complex Formations, Chong Lin, Arash D. Taleghani, Chengyuan Xu, Zhenjiang You

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Well drilling is a common method for Earth exploration, underground mineral resource extraction, and geological storage of nuclear waste and carbon dioxide. Drilling fluid circulates in the well during drilling, cooling the drill bit, transporting rock cuttings, preventing wellbore collapse, and balancing formation pressure. Lost circulation occurs when less fluid returns from the wellbore than is pumped into it, resulting in economic losses due to drilling fluid wastage and nonproductive time. Untreated losses can cause well control issues, poor hole cleaning, pack-offs, and stuck pipe, impairing normal drilling. Lost circulation incidents are more likely to occur with the increasing share …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

In this study, the concrete cone capacity, concrete cone angle, and load–displacement response of cast-in headed anchors in geopolymer concrete are explored using numerical analyses. The concrete damaged plasticity (CDP) model in ABAQUS is used to simulate the behavior of concrete substrates. The tensile behavior of anchors in geopolymer concrete is compared with that in normal concrete as well as that predicted by the linear fracture mechanics (LFM) and concrete capacity design (CCD) models. The results show that the capacity of the anchors in geopolymer concrete is 30%–40% lower than that in normal concrete. The results also indicate that the …

A Statistical Shmoo For A Decision Feedback Equalizer (Dfe), Junyong Park, Donghyun Kim Jan 2023

A Statistical Shmoo For A Decision Feedback Equalizer (Dfe), Junyong Park, Donghyun Kim

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This article proposes a statistical shmoo for a Decision Feedback Equalizer (DFE). A statistical shmoo shows a Bit-Error Rate (BER) distribution of a system depending on conditions such as a threshold voltage and sampling time. The previous statistical eye diagram can be converted to a statistical shmoo except for the case of a DFE. In the shmoo, rows and columns represent different threshold voltages and sampling times, respectively. Thus, the DFE operation also depends on each row and column. Furthermore, a DFE may have error propagations because of substantial noise. Therefore, this article proposes a statistical shmoo for an ideal …

In this regard, forward and reflected harmonic signals are measured and ultrasonic vibration is applied to cure contacts. A novel sample holder structure is designed and fabricated as a test vehicle for the measurements.
