Contributors To Pathologic Depolarization In Myotonia Congenita, Jessica Hope Myers Jan 2023

Contributors To Pathologic Depolarization In Myotonia Congenita, Jessica Hope Myers

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Myotonia congenita is an inherited skeletal muscle disorder caused by loss-of-function mutation in the CLCN1 gene. This gene encodes the ClC-1 chloride channel, which is almost exclusively expressed in skeletal muscle where it acts to stabilize the resting membrane potential. Loss of this chloride channel leads to skeletal muscle hyperexcitability, resulting in involuntary muscle action potentials (myotonic discharges) seen clinically as muscle stiffness (myotonia). Stiffness affects the limb and facial muscles, though specific muscle involvement can vary between patients. Interestingly, respiratory distress is not part of this disease despite muscles of respiration such as the diaphragm muscle also carrying this …

Friend Or Foe? The Role Of Transforming Growth Factor-Β (Tgfβ) Signaling In Calcineurin Inhibitor-Induced Renal Damage, Adaku Uwe

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

With its incorporation into clinical practice in the early 1980s, the class of pharmacological agents known as calcineurin inhibitors (CNIs) quickly became the cornerstone of immunosuppressive therapy post-organ transplantation. However, its use is limited by irreversible kidney damage in the form of renal fibrosis. The molecular mechanism by which CNIs induce renal fibrosis remains to be better understood, and to date, there are no specific therapeutic strategies to mitigate this damage. This dilemma presents a critical need to explain mechanisms by which CNIs cause renal damage. Kidneys of patients on chronic CNI therapy show increased expression of the proinflammatory cytokine …

Production Of Lithium Carbonate From Geothermal Brine By Selective Extraction Of Lithium Using A Novel Ion Sieve Method, Ujjwal Pokharel, Sandeep Kumar

College of Engineering & Technology (Batten) Posters

The project implements a novel approach to extract lithium from a geothermal brine with minimal water loss. Production of high-capacity lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries for electric vehicles (EV) is believed to be the way to reduce dependence on fossil-fuel based vehicles. Currently, most of the lithium in the world comes from the mining of lithium or the evaporative/concentration of the brine. Mining is not environmentally friendly, and the evaporative process takes 12 months for the completion of the extraction process and results in a large amount of water loss which can lead to scarcity of water. The brines constitute 82% of …

The Effect Of Process Parameters On The Properties Of Elastic Melt Blown Nonwovens: Air Pressure And Dcd, Li Change, Yanfen Zhou, Stephen Jerrams, Jianwei Ma, Shaojuan Chen

Articles

An elastic masterbatch and elastic melt blown nonwovens are prepared based successively on styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene (SEBS) and polypropylene (PP) blend. The phase separation morphology, rheological properties and crystal structure of the elastic masterbatch are investigated. The results show that a compatible and stable structure is obtained in molten SEBS and PP blend with excellent mobility in the temperature range of 210–230C. The crystallization of PP slows down resulting in a finer structure due to the restriction of the SEBS network structure with rarely change of crystalline structure. The relationship between process parameters and properties of the elastic nonwoven is also studied …
