A Bilevel Game-Theoretic Decision-Making Framework For Strategic Retailers In Both Local And Wholesale Electricity Markets, Qiuyi Hong, Fanlin Meng, Jian Liu, Rui Bo
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper proposes a bilevel game-theoretic model for multiple strategic retailers participating in both wholesale and local electricity markets while considering customers' switching behaviors. At the upper level, each retailer maximizes its own profit by making optimal pricing decisions in the retail market and bidding decisions in the day-ahead wholesale (DAW) and local power exchange (LPE) markets. The interaction among multiple strategic retailers is formulated using the Bertrand competition model. For the lower level, there are three optimization problems. First, the welfare maximization problem is formulated for customers to model their switching behaviors among different retailers. Second, a market-clearing problem …

Demonstrating Non-Isothermal Vacuum Membrane Air Dehumidification For Efficient Next-Generation Air Conditioning, Andrew J. Fix, Shivam Gupta, James E. Braun, David M. Warsinger
School of Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
Vacuum membrane air dehumidification has gained significant interest in recent years as a highly efficient means of air dehumidification. Prior theoretical modeling work by the authors 1 introduced the Active Membrane Energy Exchanger (AMX) concept, which combines active heat exchange and vacuum membrane dehumidification into one non-isothermal system, and found that it could outperform other air conditioning technologies under many conditions. However, no experimental literature exists on combining active heat exchangers and vacuum membrane dehumidification. The goal of the present study is to evaluate the dehumidification (mass transfer) performance of the AMX concept relative to isothermal membrane dehumidification through three …

The Effect Of Graphite And Activated Carbon As Dispersed Particle In Base Fluid As Quench Medium On The Hardness Of S45c Carbon Steel, Wahyuaji Narottama Putra, Danika Aprilia Somadinata, Ghiska Ramahdita
Journal of Materials Exploration and Findings
Adding a solid particle dispersion into a base fluid could increase its thermal conductivity, hence increasing the heat transfer characteristics. One example of this thermally enhanced fluid is in heat treatment industry as quench medium. By controlling the amount of the dispersed particle, the cooling rate of the quench medium can be altered, and could affect steel hardness after heat treatment. In this research, the dispersed particle used was commercially available graphite and activated carbon particle. As for the base fluid, distilled water and common engine oil were compared. The concentration of the dispersed particle was 0.1, 0.3, 0.5 weight …

Freespan Analysis For Subsea Pipeline Integrity Management Strategy, Nurul Hadi, Muhammad Helmi, Edo Cathaputra, Dedi Priadi, Donanta Dhaneswara
Journal of Materials Exploration and Findings
Abstract. Over a rough seabed or on seabed subject to scour, freespans can occur when contact between a subsea pipeline and the seabed is lost over an acceptable distance. When this exceeds the allowable freespan length, design stresses can be exceeded, and a vortex induced vibration (VIV) response can be initiated, resulting in the risk of fatigue failure. If this is not predicted and controlled properly, it will affect pipeline integrity, leading to expensive rectification and intervention work. Freespan analysis consisted primarily of a screening check in which the as-found freespans from Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) or multibeam Side …

During a move to the new drilling location, two braces of the upper mast section on a 550 HP oil and gas rig was damaged. When damage is discovered, the rig operating company should conduct a risk analysis related to the damage using the standard used to determine rejection criteria and follow-up repairs. The strength of the rig mast is calculated using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) with initial conditions (before damage occurs) where all braces are installed and extreme conditions where neither brace is repaired. The calculation results are then used to assess the risk of reducing the rig mast …

Development Of Battery Materials To Function As Corrosion Protection On Car Body Plates, Tubagus Noor Rohmannudin, Sulistijono Sulistijono, Noval Adrinanda, Faridz Wira Dharma, Samuel Areliano
Journal of Materials Exploration and Findings
Most car bodies made for mass production are made from steel or aluminum. Both are strong metals, but steel is cheaper than aluminum and is more commonly used in lower-end cars for a broader consumer range. The weakness of steel compared to aluminum is that it is susceptible to corrosion under certain conditions, and thus it may deteriorate over time without proper care. To prevent corrosion, modern cars are coated with paint to prevent direct contact with the environment. As a second line of protection, a car battery can be connected to the body to create an impressed current cathodic …

Hypothesis: Combining Carbon Geo-sequestration (CGS) with Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) in three-phase flow oil reservoirs is an effective and economically attractive technology to mitigate global warming caused by emission of anthropologic CO2 from fossil fuel combustion, as it offsets some of the costs of CO2 extraction. The targeted oil reservoirs display oil-wet characteristics, primarily because of the strong affinity of polar molecules present in oil; a mixture of a large number of chemical compounds to the rock's surface; and oil-wet surfaces that drastically reduce storage capacity of geological trapping mechanisms and increase the vertical migration of CO2. Thus, it is …

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a primary air pollutant and a poisonous species for human beings, animals, and some catalytic reactions. Meanwhile, CO is also a versatile feedstock in the chemical industry to produce high‐value chemicals and clean fuels, which has stimulated extensive research interests in exploiting efficient CO conversion processes. Redox potential is a key thermodynamic quantity in these processes whereas only standard reduction potentials at 25°Cand 1 atm are currently available. Herein, it is the first time to report the effects of temperature (0–1000°C), pressure (1–100 atm), and adsorption on the redox potentials of 18 CO conversion reactions to …

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) generated in sewer systems is problematic to public health and the environment, owing to its corrosive consequences, odor concerns, and poison control issues. In a previous work, conductive concrete, based on amorphous carbon with a mechanism that operates as a microbial fuel cell was investigated. The objective of the present study is to develop additional materials for highly conductive concrete, to mitigate the concentration of H2S in sewer pipes. Adsorption experiments were conducted to elucidate the role of the H2S reduction. Additionally, electricity-producing bacteria (EPB), isolated from a municipal wastewater treatment plant, were inoculated to improve the …
Invariant-Set Design Of Robust Switched Trackers For Bidirectional Power Converters In Hybrid Microgrids, Ehab Bayoumi
Invariant-Set Design Of Robust Switched Trackers For Bidirectional Power Converters In Hybrid Microgrids, Ehab Bayoumi
Mechanical Engineering
The small-signal stability of a hybrid (DC/AC) microgrid is highly affected by the direction and amount of power flow through the interlinking converter (IC). This article proposes an invariant-set design of nondroop tracker (to follow the desired time-varying reference) for controlling the power flow in hybrid microgrids in both inversion and rectification modes. The proposed tracker provides fast response, zero steady state error, and robustness against system uncertainty. Since the invariant-set is difficult to calculate, it is approximated using a bounding ellipsoid (being a linear function, and the problem reduces to convex optimization, easy to solve). A novel linear matrix …

Plant-microbe interactions are critical for ecosystem functioning and driving rhizosphere processes. To fully understand the communication pathways between plants and rhizosphere microbes, it is crucial to measure the numerous processes that occur in the plant and the rhizosphere. The present review first provides an overview of how plants interact with their surrounding microbial communities, and in turn, are affected by them. Next, different optical biosensing technologies that elucidate the plant-microbe interactions and provide pathogenic detection are summarized. Currently, most of the biosensors used for detecting plant parameters or microbial communities in soil are centered around genetically encoded optical and electrochemical …

Locally Resonant Metasurface For Low-Frequency Transmissive Underwater Acoustic Waves, Zhong Chen, Shenghong Guan, Qiang Xie, Zheng Li, Zhongmei Gao, Mehrdad Negahban
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
Introduction: Acoustic metasurfaces for underwater wave manipulation have great potential use, but the strong solid-fluid interaction caused by impedance closeness between the structure and water brings design difficulty, especially in the low-frequency range.
Methods: Here a locally resonant metasurface for transmissive underwater acoustic waves is proposed using finite element method for which each metasurface unit consists of one channel and three subunits. Each subunit has one plate and two rubber spacers to form a resonator. By changing the height ratio of the plate over the subunit, arbitrary phase shifts within the full 2π coverage can be obtained at …
A Networked Radar System For Tracking Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems, Douglas Graff
A Networked Radar System For Tracking Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems, Douglas Graff
Theses and Dissertations
Tracking small unmanned aircraft systems (SUAS) becomes increasingly important with their increased use in populated areas. We propose an effective tracking solution for SUAS using a networked system of one-dimensional scanning radars. Tracking SUAS with a network of radar systems requires extrinsic calibration of each radar to a common frame. We provide a calibration solution using an orthogonal Procrustes formulation that associates radar measurements from the ground-mounted radar to real-time-kinematic Global Positioning System (RTK-GPS) data. Two variations of the calibration are presented, an online and batch processing method. Outdoor hardware experiments validate the capabilities of the radar network in tracking …

We used network analysis to identify subtypes of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis subjects based on their cumulative signs and symptoms. The electronic medical records of 113 subjects with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis were reviewed, signs and symptoms were mapped to classes in a neuro-ontology, and classes were collapsed into sixteen superclasses by subsumption. After normalization and vectorization of the data, bipartite (subject-feature) and unipartite (subject-subject) network graphs were created using NetworkX and visualized in Gephi. Degree and weighted degree were calculated for each node. Graphs were partitioned into communities using the modularity score. Feature maps visualized differences in features by community. Network …

Castor oil has been proposed as a renewable solvent for the liquid extraction of ethanol from water as an alternative to more traditional energy intensive distillation-based methods. The liquid–liquid equilibrium (LLE) of the ternary system water + ethanol + castor oil was determined at 295.15 K using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Castor oil was herein treated as a pseudo-component with the molecular weight of the triglyceride of ricinoleic acid. The experimental data was fitted to the UNIQUAC and NRTL models to obtain parameters for castor oil, and binary interaction parameters for castor oil/ethanol and castor oil/water pairs. The separation …

The utilization of carbon dioxide (CO2) in chemical production has attracted global research interest. Reacting CO2 with methane (CH4) removes these greenhouse gases from the atmosphere and turns both compounds into building blocks for organic compound synthesis. A commonly explored pathway involves dry reforming of methane (DRM), which reacts CH4 and CO2 to form syngas, a mixture of H2 and CO. Syngas is a widely used feedstock for synthesizing chemicals ranging from methanol to fuels via the Fischer-Tropsch (FT) process. However, DRM has a large positive ΔGº, which requires the …

Due to the ever increasing demand for cleaner water, a remarkable focus has been on the use of nanomaterials in wastewater treatment application. Photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) degradation, an advanced oxidation process which combines light and electrical energy, has been identified as a suitable technique capable of achieving total mineralisation of recalcitrant organic pollutants in wastewater. PEC degradation is non-selective, environmentally friendly and possesses great efficiency. The efficiency of PEC degradation has been enhanced by fabricating the photoanodes on a nanoscale with distinct morphologies. These nanostructured photoanodes have been extensively used for the removal of pharmaceuticals, dyes and phenolic water from wastewater. …

Recently, driver inattention has become the leading cause of automobile accidents. As a result, the driver's perception and decision-making abilities are diminished, and the driver can lose control of the car. To prevent accidents caused by driver inattention, it’s vital to continuously monitor the driver and his driving behaviour and inform him if he becomes distracted or sleepy. This topic has been the subject of study for decades. Whenever feasible to recognise unsafe driving in advance, accidents could be avoided. This document presents an overview of the existing driver alertness system and the various techniques for detecting driver attentiveness.
