Estimation Of Optimal Flight Trajectory In A Total Power Loss Scenario Using Proximal Policy Optimization, Eidahn Eliash
Theses and Dissertations
Recent research has been conducted in using deep reinforcement learning algorithms to generate closed form optimal control laws for helicopters in power loss scenarios. The control laws could allow for design of various cockpit visual pilot aids if proven successful. Such pilot aids are predicted to reduce pilot workload during execution of an emergency powerless landing, and to overall increase the probability of landing safely in such an event. The proposed topic discusses the use of the PPO algorithm in order to find an optimal control policy for a helicopter in a total power loss emergency landing scenario. The task …

Concept Of Operations Of Cislunar Mirror Satellites To Provide Augmented Lighting Of Dim Space-Based Objects, Alec E. Cook
Concept Of Operations Of Cislunar Mirror Satellites To Provide Augmented Lighting Of Dim Space-Based Objects, Alec E. Cook
Theses and Dissertations
The imaging and inspection of Resident Space Objects (RSOs) is an increasingly important mission as space-faring nations and commercial enterprises alike seek to develop means to repair and refuel spacecraft, as well as de-orbit RSOs to reduce orbital debris. Lighting conditions are not always advantageous for an imaging/inspection or repair/refuel spacecraft; therefore, the use of mirror spacecraft to reflect solar energy is proposed to illuminate dimly lit RSOs. The present research investigates the efficacy of space-based reflectors at examining spacecraft in the cislunar environment. Specific assessments include target spacecraft in geosynchronous Earth orbit and periodic orbits around selected Lagrange points, …
Fragility Of The Florida Panhandle's Electrical Transmission Grid To Hurricanes, Zachary D. Schumann
Fragility Of The Florida Panhandle's Electrical Transmission Grid To Hurricanes, Zachary D. Schumann
Theses and Dissertations
The increased frequency and intensity of extreme weather events from climate change necessitates understanding impacts on critical infrastructure, particularly electrical transmission grids. One of the foundational concepts of a grid’s resilience is its robustness to extreme weather events, such as hurricanes. Resilience of the electric grid to high wind speeds is predicated upon the location and physical characteristics of the system components. Previous modeling assessments of electric grid failure were done at the systems level with assumptions on location and type of specific components. To facilitate more explicit adaptation metrics, accurate component-level information is needed. In this study, we build …
Overall Effectiveness Superposition Theory For A Film Cooled Leading Edge, Bailey W. Hopkins
Overall Effectiveness Superposition Theory For A Film Cooled Leading Edge, Bailey W. Hopkins
Theses and Dissertations
Film cooling experimentation traditionally reports on the cooling performance of specialty-crafted cooling holes at various angles and array patterns. This is repeated across a variety of model geometries in an effort to provide as much information to the turbine blade designer. While this extensive database of cooling performance is helpful, its true value is found in the designer’s ability to effectively superpose the results on top of each other. One technique for predicting the performance of multiple coolant sources is film cooling superposition theory. This analytical model was employed classically by characterizing the adiabatic effectiveness across a model’s surface; however, …

Optimal Gyroid Infill For Space Launch, Jose R. Lopez Cordell
Theses and Dissertations
This research characterizes the optimal gyroid infill design for the 1st frequency response of composite sandwich panels. Structural performance may be improved by designing the gyroid infill within the sandwich panel to have a 1st mode resonance frequency above typical launch vehicle vibrations. Ensuring a component generates a natural frequency response above a designed threshold is mandatory for space launch systems to prevent damage. The gyroid, a Triply Periodic Minimal Surface (TPMS), has the potential to provide close to isotropic stiffness in the principal axes with a minimal amount of material, making it an attractive choice for this application. This …

Ceramic On-Demand Extrusion (CODE) is a direct ink writing process which allows for the creation of near theoretically dense ceramic components with large cross-sections due to oil-assisted drying. Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) colloidal pastes (∼d50 ≲ 1 µm) were used in CODE to produce dense (multi-road infill and ≳ 98% relative density), large continuous volume (> 1 cm3), and high fidelity (nozzle diameters ≲ 1 mm) structural ceramic components. However, many of these printed components underwent significant particle migration after forming. The reason for this particle migration defect was investigated using the coffee-ring effect for dilute solutions and rheological methods for …

Tempnet – Temporal Super-Resolution Of Radar Rainfall Products With Residual Cnns, Muhammed Ali Sit, Bongchul Seo, Ibrahim Demir
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The temporal and spatial resolution of rainfall data is crucial for environmental modeling studies in which its variability in space and time is considered as a primary factor. Rainfall products from different remote sensing instruments (e.g., radar, satellite) have different space-time resolutions because of the differences in their sensing capabilities and post-processing methods. In this study, we developed a deep-learning approach that augments rainfall data with increased time resolutions to complement relatively lower-resolution products. We propose a neural network architecture based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), namely TempNet, to improve the temporal resolution of radar-based rainfall products and compare the …

Solving math word problems (MWP) is a challenging task due to the semantic gap between natural language texts and mathematical equations. The main purpose of the task is to take a written math problem as input and produce a proper equation as output for solving that problem. This paper describes a sequence-to-sequence (seq2seq) neural model for automatically solving Turkish MWPs based on their semantic meanings in the text. It comprises a bidirectional encoder to comprehend the semantics of the problem by encoding the input sequence and a decoder with attention to extract the equation by tracking the semantic meanings of …

Boomerang Algorithm Based On Swarm Optimization For Inverse Kinematics Of 6 Dof Open Chain Manipulators, Okan Duymazlar, Di̇lşad Engi̇n
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this study, a feasible swarm intelligence algorithm is proposed that computes the inverse kinematics solution of 6 degree of freedom (DOF) industrial robot arms, which are frequently used in industrial and medical applications. The proposed algorithm is named as Boomerang algorithm due to its recursive structure. The proposed algorithm aims to reduce the computation time to feasible levels without increasing the position and orientation errors. In order to reduce the computational time in swarm optimization algorithms and increase feasibility, an alternative definition method was used instead of the DH method in defining the robot arm kinematic configuration. The effect …

This paper explores the application of a deep neural network (DNN) framework to human gait analysis for injury classification. The paper aims to identify whether a subject is healthy or has an injury of the ankle, knee, hip, or heel solely based on ground reaction force plate measurements. We consider how three DNNs-the multi-layer perceptron (MLP), fully convolutional network (FCN), and residual network (ResNet)-can be applied to gait analysis when the number of trainable network parameters far exceeds the number of training samples, and benchmark their performance in this context against that of shallow neural networks. The DNN architectures outperformed …

Fly ash (FA) – an industrial byproduct – is used to partially substitute Portland cement (PC) in concrete to mitigate concrete's environmental impact. Chemical composition and structure of FAs significantly impact hydration kinetics and compressive strength of concrete. Due to the substantial diversity in these physicochemical attributes of FAs, it has been challenging to develop a generic theoretical framework – and, therefore, theory-based analytical models – that could produce reliable, a priori predictions of properties of [PC + FA] binders. In recent years, machine learning (ML) – which is purely data-driven, as opposed to being derived from theorical underpinnings – …
