Transcriptome Profiling Of A Synergistic Volumetric Muscle Loss Repair Strategy, Kevin Roberts, John Taehwan Kim, Jacob Schluns, Grady Dunlap, Jamie Hestekin, Jeffery Wolchok

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Volumetric muscle loss overwhelms skeletal muscle’s ordinarily capable regenerative machinery, resulting in severe functional deficits that have defied clinical repair strategies. In this manuscript we pair the early in vivo functional response induced by differing volumetric muscle loss tissue engineering repair strategies that are broadly representative of those explored by the field (scaffold alone, cells alone, or scaffold + cells) to the transcriptomic response induced by each intervention. We demonstrate that an implant strategy comprising allogeneic decellularized skeletal muscle scaffolds seeded with autologous minced muscle cellular paste (scaffold + cells) mediates a pattern of increased expression for several genes known …

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Despite significant advances in distributed renewable energy systems (DRES), the technology still faces several substantial challenges that prevent the large-scale adoption of these systems into a country’s energy sector. The intermittency of renewables, uncertainties associated with real-time multi-horizon weather and load forecasts, and lack of comprehensive control systems are among the main technical and regulatory challenges for the real-world adoption of DRES. This paper outlines the current state of knowledge in the real-world operation of DRES and also describes pathways and methodologies that enable and facilitate the uptake of DRES in a country’s energy sector.

Reference-Based Screentone Transfer Via Pattern Correspondence And Regularization, Zhansheng Li, Nanxuan Zhao, Zongwei Wu, Yihua Dai, Junle Wang, Yanqing Jing, Shengfeng He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Adding screentone to initial line drawings is a crucial step for manga generation, but is a tedious and human-laborious task. In this work, we propose a novel data-driven method aiming to transfer the screentone pattern from a reference manga image. This not only ensures the quality, but also adds controllability to the generated manga results. The reference-based screentone translation task imposes several unique challenges. Since manga image often contains multiple screentone patterns interweaved with line drawing, as an abstract art, this makes it even more difficult to extract disentangled style code from the reference. Also, finding correspondence for mapping between …

Structural Integrity Assessment Of Shell And Tube Heat Exchanger Tube-To-Tubesheet Joints Fabricated Using Conventional And Nonconventional Manufacturing Processes, Dinu Thomas Thekkuden

Dissertations

Tubes and tubesheets, integral components of shell and tube heat exchangers, have an important role in the functioning of the heat transfer between the tube-side and shell-side fluids. Tube-to-tubesheet joints act as a barrier to prevent the mixing of the transfer fluids in addition to aiding the structural rigidity of the shell and tube heat exchanger. Tube expansion process and welding are the manufacturing processes used for fabricating structurally rigid tube-to-tubesheet joints. Many instances of tube-totubesheet joint failures leading to the complete collapse of the heat exchangers demand attention to assessing the mechanical and metallurgical characteristics of tube-totubesheet joints fabricated …

Dissertations

With the growing concerns on the energy depletion and CO2 emissions, electric vehicles (EVs) have marked a new paradigm in the transport sector. Installation of publicly accessible charging stations (CS), namely fast CSs are crucial for the large-scale deployment of EVs. However, randomly placing CSs without prior research affect EV owners, CS operators and grid operators. For instance, the location and size of charging stations affect the accessibility and convenience of EV users since users prefer charging stations that are easier to access without much traffic congestion in road networks. At the same time station should offer good service …

Optimal Component Sizing And Control Of A Multi-Source Elecctric Vehicle Based On An Improved Optimization Algorithm And A Novel Energy Management System, Prasanthi Achikkulath

Dissertations

Electric vehicles (EVs) are considered the ultimate solution for a sustainable transportation alternative to reduce the global warming and energy crisis. The public's perception of EVs is still adverse despite advancements in EV technology because of issues with driving range, high initial costs, the added weight of the energy source, and an unpredictably short lifespan of the EV system. To administer the same performance as compared to modern fossil fuel-based vehicles, hybridization of multiple energy sources is significant for EVs. The most pressing issues with multi-source EVs are optimum source sizing and regulating power flow from hybridization sources with the …

Capturing Maximum Photovoltaic Power With Machine Learning: Maximum Current Prediction, Mppt Methodology, And Adjustable Ml-Based Controller, Zahi Mohamed Mohamed

Dissertations

The primary aim of this doctoral thesis is to examine the potential application of machine learning (ML) in optimizing Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) and devising a flexible ML-based controller for photovoltaic (PV) systems. The lack of MPPT mechanisms leads to fixed voltage and current points for PV modules, resulting in substantial power loss when environmental conditions vary. The limitations of conventional and enhanced MPPT methods, as well as finding an alternative controller to classical Proportional-Integral (PI) controllers, have spurred the search for substitute approaches to maximize PV power. To address these limitations, this thesis proposes using ensemble ML techniques, …

Cost Advantages Of Far East/Europe Trunk Route Deployment With Port Selection In East Asia, Tai Hui-Huang, Chang Chin-Wei Mar 2023

Cost Advantages Of Far East/Europe Trunk Route Deployment With Port Selection In East Asia, Tai Hui-Huang, Chang Chin-Wei

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

To cater to the gradually increasing sizes of ships, several traditional container ports in East Asia built deep-water wharves to attract shipping carriers to berth, a decision that is considered highly reasonable because it allows for shipping carriers to gain a cost advantage. For traditional Far East/Europe (F/E) trunk routes, shipping carriers must deploy vessels that are large enough at hub ports to maintain low transshipment costs. However, for a port to attract shipping carriers, it should be able to first meet the cargo demand of these carriers. The port would also need to improve the loading ratio to enjoy …

Deep Learning–Based, Oceantdlx Sea Ice Detection Model For Sar Image, Liu Lin, Li Wanwu, Li Hang, Sun Yi

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This study constructs four deep-learning OceanTDLx series models and uses a WinR-AdaGrad gradient descent algorithm to train and optimize the constructed models. Through an analysis of the loss, accuracy, and time consumption of the four models (i.e., OceanTDL2, OceanTDL3, OceanTDL5 and OceanTDL8), we reveal that the models’ performance does not improve when the number of layers is increased and that OceanTDL5 provides the optimal performance. OceanTDL5 is compared with OceanTDA9 (a model that we previously constructed), and the curves for training loss_batch and training accuracy_batch indicate that OceanTDL5 is more suitable than OceanTDA9 for detecting distributed targets, particularly semi-melted sea …

A Cloud Based Model Symbiotic Organism Search Algorithm For Placement Of Distributed Energy Resources In The Electrical Secondary Distribution Networks, Shamte Kawambwa, Daudi Mnyanghwalo

Tanzania Journal of Science

Abstract The increased penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) technologies to residential users has fostered the need for DERs integration and control methods in the secondary distribution networks (SDN). In order to reap the potential advantages of DERs and achieve their inclusion in the electrical power system while avoiding their negative impacts, the DERs should be optimally placed and sized. Considering the nature of electrical networks and DER operations, the DERs placement is a nondeterministic polynomial hard (NP-hard) optimization problem. Metaheuristic algorithms are efficient for solving DER placement problems. Metaheuristic algorithms for DER placement in SDN involve high computational effort, …
