Having a controlled environment to measure atmospheric turbulence is essential to understanding its effects on different laser beam characteristics. The Clemson Variable Turbulence Generator (VTG) has the capability to propagate a laser beam up to 100 m and be able to dial many turbulence settings up to a heat flux of 357 W/m2. A high-speed camera, power detector, and high-resolution temperature probes characterize the VTG with theoretical turbulence spectrums. The exponent associated with the Rayleigh-Bénard (RB) temperature structure constant equation is studied. This thesis adopts eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) to identify the key factors influencing the fire-induced spalling of concrete and to extract new insights into the fire-induced spalling phenomenon. In this pursuit, an XAI model was developed, validated, and then augmented with two explainability measures, namely, Shapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) and Local Interpretable Model-Agnostic Explanations (LIME). The current treatment of poultry processing wastewater (PPW) requires a large expanse of land, takes time, and requires chemical usage. The wastewater is typically treated prior to discharge. Apart from aiming to reuse the treated water for non-potable activities, this project aimed to reduce the footprint and time required for PPW treatment. To intensify the PPW treatment units, we studied the possibility of replacing dissolved air floatation (DAF) with a stainless steel ultrafiltration membrane (SSUF). This dissertation presents a design strategy to increase the power density for automotive Power Conversion Units (PCUs) consisting of DC-DC and DC-AC stages. The strategy significantly improves the volumetric power density, as evident by a proposed PCU constructed and tested having 55.6 kW/L, representing an 11.2 % improvement on the Department of Energy’s 2025 goal of 50 kW/L for the same power electronics architecture. Dissipative particle dynamics (DPD), a coarse grain simulation method, was applied to the membrane formation process of non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) to gain further insight on the mechanism of certain variables and how they affect the final morphology. NIPS involves two solutions, an organic polymer dissolved in an organic solvent colloquially called the dope and an aqueous coagulation bath, brought into contact with one another. The solvents then mix, causing the polymer to fall out of solution as an asymmetric membrane with a dense surface layer and a more open subsurface layer in response to the decreasing solubility. Volumetric muscle loss (VML) overwhelms muscle’s robust capacity for regeneration. A key event in the etiology of VML injury is the bulk loss of structural cues provided by the underlying extracellular matrix (ECM). While muscle is a highly structured tissue, with cell and ECM alignment in the direction of contractile force production, the impact of scaffold alignment on recovery remains unclear. A practical CFD k-epsilon realizable model is applied to four pipe systems with various 90° bend configurations to examine velocity profile evolution and total pressure losses within the pipe systems. The pipe systems compared are a configuration with a single 90° L-bend, as well as three additional pipe configurations composed of dual 90° bends, all with total length x/D=16.7. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between U.S. airport characteristics, hurricane strength, and hurricane proximity and the time it takes airspace activity to recover to normal after experiencing a catastrophic hurricane. It determined the relative influence of five airport characteristics and two hurricane characteristics as predictors of time for airspace activity to recover to normal. The result is a predictive airport disaster resilience equation to estimate the expected airport recovery rate for a forecasted catastrophic hurricane. In this study, the aim is to improve the lung cancer detection performance of electronic noses (e-noses) with breath analysis by using two different types of gas sensor-based e-nose. This paper aims to put forward an analytical solution for tuning parameters of a fractional order PI (FOPI) controller for stable, unstable, and integrating processes with time delay. Following this purpose, the analytical weighted geometrical center (AWGC) method has been extended to the design of fractional order PI controllers. To apply AWGC, the stability equations of the closed-loop system are written in terms of process and fractional order PI controller parameters. The block Cimmino method is successfully used for the parallel solution of large linear systems of equations due to its amenability to parallel processing. Since the convergence rate of block Cimmino depends on the orthogonality between the row blocks, advanced partitioning methods are used for faster convergence. Several perarylphosphonium based mesothermal ionic liquids (ILs) have been shown to be stable at high temperatures for prolonged periods of time and with high heat capacities making them good candidates for use in many processes such as usage as a heat transfer fluid, as an absorbent for separation of aromatics from aliphatics, and as a solvent for high temperature reactions. Many, however, have melting points above 100o C, limiting their use.
