Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Natural disasters cause significant damage to the electrical power infrastructure every year. Therefore, there is a crucial need to reduce the vulnerability of the electric power grid against natural disasters. Distributed generation (DG) represents small-scale decentralized power generation that can help reduce the vulnerability of the grid, among many other benefits. Examples of DG include small-scale photo-voltaic (PV) systems. Accordingly, the goal of this paper is to investigate the benefits of DG in reducing the vulnerability of the electric power infrastructure by mitigating against the impact of natural disasters on transmission lines. This was achieved by developing a complex system-of-systems …

Culture In Computing: The Importance Of Developing Gender-Inclusive Software, Creighton France
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The field of computing as we know it today exists because of the contributions of numerous female mathematicians, computer scientists, and programmers. While working with hardware was viewed as “a man’s job” during the mid-20th century, computing and programming was viewed as a noble and high-paying field for women to occupy. However, as time has progressed, the U.S. has seen a decrease in the number of women pursuing computer science. The idea that computing is a masculine discipline is common in the U.S. today for reasons such as male-centered marketing of electronics and gadgets, an inaccurate representation of what it …

Source Code Plagiarism Detection Using Jplag & Stack Overflow Data, Sudheer Yetthapu
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Advancements in computer technology and internet services have led to the availability of vast amounts of information like videos, articles, research papers, and code samples. Free online information will increase the possibility of plagiarism and collusion among students. People can commit plagiarism in both text and code [1], as tools used to detect plagiarism between texts and between codes are distinct. Traditionally plagiarism in code is detected using manual inspection, which is a tedious process and misses to compare code from previous submissions and external sources. To overcome this issue, systems that can automatically detect plagiarism in code were developed …

Wind-driven single-sided ventilation is present in many existing buildings globally, and its performance can be unreliable and challenging to improve. To address these performance challenges, a better understanding of the interconnected relationship between the external and internal flows is required. Therefore, a detailed assessment of this type of natural ventilation is vital. A detailed CFD analysis of wind-dominant single-sided natural ventilation is presented by adopting the Large Eddy Simulation method, validated using previous wind tunnel studies. An isolated cube, representing a three-storey building, was used to investigate four case studies with different opening positions on the building façade. The …

Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) is a high-performance polymer material for developing implants for orthopedic, spinal, cranial, maxillofacial, and dentistry applications. However, the major limitation of PEEK implants is their bio-inertness, i.e., their incapability to integrate with tissues. Therefore, prior efforts have always focused on developing Hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings on PEEK or PEEK-HA composites or sulfonation of PEEK surface or plasma treatment. As opposed, in this study, we engineered a highly novel bio-ceramic known as amorphous magnesium phosphate (AMP), which surpasses the bioactivity and biodegradation kinetics of HA. In this study, we employed High energy planetary ball milling, a mechanical alloying …

Most of the rain that falls over land, falls over forests, which cover approximately one-third of global land surface. Significant immediate and wide-ranging impacts are exerted on hydrological, ecological, and societal systems due to canopyrainfall interactions, altering rainwater supply to the surface. All storm-related hydrological processes are impacted by the relative rates that canopy surfaces retain, evaporate, and redistribute rain. Many forest canopies host a community of plants called epiphytes that are generally capable of storing and evaporating substantial water. Epiphytes are comparatively under-researched regarding their role in rainfall partitioning compared to bark and leaves. Skidaway Island in Savannah, Georgia, …

Poly-l-lactic acid has been of a great interest to the medical profession in recent years because of its biodegradability and biocompatibility. The biodegradation rate can be controlled by its crystallinity content. One method to modify its crystallinity content is by cold drawing. Raman spectroscopy is utilized to distinguish between the different crystalline content on the sample. However, a chemical imaging method is needed to characterize the polymer on the macro level. Chemical imaging using Raman spectroscopy is an important method of characterization that is non-invasive and non-destructive. The emphasis of my research has been to develop a method to characterize …

Development Of 3d Ovarian Cancer Spheroids In Vitro And Investigation Of Their Physiological Relevance As Models Of Inherent Chemoresistance, Amanda Murray
Honors College Theses
Ovarian cancer is the sixth leading cause of death among women worldwide, with an average 5-year survival rate of less than 48%. Current clinical treatment methods for this disease are often deemed ineffective because of the innate chemoresistance of tumors due to their microenvironment and architecture. Accurately mimicking chemoresistance with traditional 2D cultures is difficult; therefore, recent years have seen an increase in 3D culturing methods that create cellular spheroids. These spheroids can serve as models of in vivo tumor characteristics due to their hypoxic core, acidic microenvironment, and increased cell-to-cell interactions. This research aims to (1) refine a 3D …

PEEK is a high-performance polymer known for its exceptional mechanical properties, making it suitable for various applications; however, for certain demanding applications such as automotive, PEEK does not exhibit the required strength. Moreover, if the PEEK parts are developed by Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF)-based 3D Printing, there is a high chance of having PEEK parts with decreased mechanical properties. Carbon Fiber (CF) reinforcement is a well-known method of mitigating the low mechanical properties of PEEK. Hence, in the present study, we attempted to develop CF-reinforced PEEK (CFR-PEEK) parts via FFF. First, we developed homogeneous CFR-PEEK mixtures via ball milling and …

Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a widely used polymer that has unique properties such as chemical and temperature resistance, corrosion resistance, low maintenance cost, and a very low coefficient of friction (COF). These distinctive properties have made PTFE a promising candidate for industrial applications where surfaces are in relative motion. PTFE can be utilized as a thin film solid lubricant to significantly reduce the friction between moving surfaces. However, PTFE coatings have low cohesion and poor adhesion to the substrate resulting in its low wear resistance. This fact limits the application of PTFE coatings in load-bearing situations. To address these limitations, an …

Bond-Breaker Properties Of Different Media For Concrete Pavement Design, Andres Calzacorta
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Currently Arkansas requires a layer of asphalt as the main bond-breaker over cement treated base for rigid pavement design. The study presented in this paper aims to replicate the results from previous research which demonstrated the bond-breaker properties of concrete curing compounds and geotextiles. Bond-breakers are materials applied to the surface of stabilized bases to reduce the interaction between the base and a pavement cement concrete layer. The excessive interaction between these two layers can lead to cracking in the overlay and reduction of the serviceability life of concrete. The curing compound was applied in a single application (SA, 200 …

Pda/Ptfe Solid Lubricant Coating For 60niti Applications, Charles Richey Miller
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The intermetallic alloy 60NiTi has a unique combination of high hardness and low elastic modulus, which makes it highly resistant to dents. Additionally, 60NiTi is extremely corrosion resistant and chemically inert. These properties make 60NiTi a desirable material for challenging mechanical component applications with high contact stresses and in harsh environments. However, lubrication issues have hindered the use of 60NiTi because it has poor tribological performance if it is not properly lubricated. The mechanical properties of hardened 60NiTi and its microconstituents were studied by nanoindentation. This study showed that the bulk properties of 60NiTi are driven by the properties of …
