Biologically Inspired Multi-Robot System Based On Wolf Hunting Behavior, Zachary Hinnen, Chance Hamilton, Alfredo Weitzenfeld
Florida Conference on Recent Advances in Robotics
Studies involving the group predator behavior of wolves have inspired multiple robotic architectures to mimic these biological behaviors in their designs and research. In this work, we aim to use robotic systems to mimic wolf packs' single and group behavior. This work aims to extend the original research by Weitzenfeld et al [7] and evaluate under a new multi-robot robot system architecture. The multiple robot architecture includes a 'Prey' pursued by a wolf pack consisting of an 'Alpha' and 'Beta' robotic group. The Alpha Wolf' will be the group leader, searching and tracking the 'Prey.' At the same time, the …

Programming By Demonstration Using Learning Based Approach: A Mini Review, Atul Acharya, Rajiv Dubey, Redwan Alqasemi
Florida Conference on Recent Advances in Robotics
Wheelchair-mounted robotic arms are used in rehabilitation robotics to help physically impaired people perform ADL (Activity of daily living) tasks. However, the dexterity of manipulation tasks makes the teleoperation of the robotic arm challenging for the user, as it is difficult to control all degrees of freedom with a handheld joystick or a screen touch device. PbD (Programming by demonstration) allows the user to demonstrate the desired behavior and enables the system to learn from the demonstrations and adapt to a new environment. This learned model can perform a new set of actions in a new environment. Learning from a …

Florida Conference on Recent Advances in Robotics
We compare the relevance of POMDP graphical models to addressing a given common task, the autonomous navigation, in mobile robotics, for robots in three different environments: legged walking, wheeled, and underwater robots. Principled approaches to the implementation of Intelligent robots in realistic environments with uncertainty exploit probabilistic models. The use of graphical models increases tractability and verifiability of probabilistic reasoning. Our robots face similar localization problems of passing by three doors on a corridor in a building, respectively, for the underwater case, of passing by three barrels in a pool. All the three robots are equipped solely with noisy sonars …
Flexible Magnetic Skin Sensor Array For Torsion Perception, Lucja Stawikowska, Erik D. Engeberg
Flexible Magnetic Skin Sensor Array For Torsion Perception, Lucja Stawikowska, Erik D. Engeberg
Florida Conference on Recent Advances in Robotics
Prosthetic hands help upper limb amputees and people who were born without hands. Currently, these prostheses are rather rudimentary and do not provide adequate sensing capabilities compared to a human hand. People use their natural hands to perceive complex tactile phenomena such as shear and torsion using thousands of mechanoreceptors in their fingertips. The capability to detect torsional loads at the fingertips is a notable gap in prosthetic hand sensation. Flexible tactile sensors are a promising new technology that would be ideal for prosthetic hands since they allow for stretching and movement like human skin without damage to the sensor. …

Towards Optimal Operation And Control Of Emerging Electric Distribution Networks, Jimiao Zhang
Theses and Dissertations
The growing integration of power-electronics converters enabled components causes low inertia in the evolving electric distribution networks, which also suffer from uncertainties due to renewable energy sources, electric demands, and anomalies caused by physical or cyber attacks, etc. These issues are addressed in this dissertation. First, a virtual synchronous generator (VSG) solution is provided for solar photovoltaics (PVs) to address the issues of low inertia and system uncertainties. Furthermore, for a campus AC microgrid, coordinated control of the PV-VSG and a combined heat and power (CHP) unit is proposed and validated. Second, for islanded AC microgrids composed of SGs and …
High-Speed Photonic Signal Processing For Free Space Optical Stealth Communication And Interference Management, Yang Qi
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on free space optical stealth communication and wideband interference management techniques. The coexistence of multiple high-speed wireless communication systems generates wideband interference, which poses a challenge to the contemporary framework of signal processing. To protect the security and privacy of users' communications, stealth communication techniques that hide and recover private information against eavesdropping attacks are necessary. The main challenge in stealth information recovery and interference management is to separate the signal of interest from noise and wideband interference [1]. This dissertation proposes and experimentally demonstrates various techniques for stealth communication and wideband interference management using photonic signal …

A Novel Graph Neural Network-Based Framework For Automatic Modulation Classification In Mobile Environments, Pejman Ghasemzadeh
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Automatic modulation classification (AMC) refers to a signal processing procedure through which the modulation type and order of an observed signal are identified without any prior information about the communications setup. AMC has been recognized as one of the essential measures in various communications research fields such as intelligent modem design, spectrum sensing and management, and threat detection. The research literature in AMC is limited to accounting only for the noise that affects the received signal, which makes their models applicable for stationary environments. However, a more practical and real-world application of AMC can be found in mobile environments where …

Selecting The Optimal Formwork System For Horizontal Elements, Alaa Allam, Emad Elbeltagi, Mohamed Naguib Abouelsaad, Mohamed E. El Madawy
Mansoura Engineering Journal
Various types of formworks are available in the market for construction of cast-in-place concrete structures. Formwork has a significant impact on both construction time and cost. As such, decision making on the optimal formwork system is difficult and timeconsuming for designers or planners particularly for high-rise buildings, where any reduction in the cost of single-story formwork significantly decrease total construction cost. Formworks must be designed effectively as numerous accidents have happened as a result of poor design decisions. This article presents a Genetic Algorithm optimization model to select the optimal formwork system among Cuplock, Shore brace and Props systems that …

A Neutrosophic Framework For Assessment Of Distributed Circular Water To Give Neighborhoods Analysis To Prepare For Unexpected Stressor Events, Mohamed Abouhawwash, Mohammed Jameel, Sameh S. Askar
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
The global water issue is caused by a number of factors, including extreme weather, population increase, and industrial activity. One of the reasons we're running out of water as a planet is because of the outdated take-make-use-throw-away linear paradigm of handling water. It has been suggested that the circular economy may help alleviate water shortages by inspiring a fundamental change in municipal water infrastructure. Reduced consumption, recovered natural resources, and minimal waste are the three pillars of a circular water supply. A dispersed water supply is more adaptable and robust than a centralized one because it gives communities more time …

Behavior Of Gas Influx In Riser And Considerations For Riser Gas Handling, Mahendra Kumar Kunju
Behavior Of Gas Influx In Riser And Considerations For Riser Gas Handling, Mahendra Kumar Kunju
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Conventional methods of managing Gas-in-Riser events are not optimal when the riser is isolated from the formation by a closed subsea blowout preventer (BOP) on rigs equipped with Mud-GasSeparator (MGS), Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD), or Riser Gas Handling (RGH) equipment. As the use of adaptive drilling processes like MPD facilitates drilling of otherwise non-drillable wells with faster corrective action, the drilling industry should include the effect of gas solubility, dispersion, bubble suspension, fluid compressibility as well as riser ballooning to avoid overestimation of riser pressure and produce more efficient well control methods. The IADC Deepwater Well Control Guideline recommends always …
Flexural Wave Manipulation By Non-Hermitian Planar Elastic Metasurface, Katerina Stojanoska
Flexural Wave Manipulation By Non-Hermitian Planar Elastic Metasurface, Katerina Stojanoska
Theses and Dissertations
It has been demonstrated that metasurfaces with spatially asymmetric inner geometry exhibit unidirectional scattering effects, which can be used to control waves in a directional fashion. In this thesis, a planar Non-Hermitian elastic metasurface exhibiting unidirectional focusing of flexural waves is proposed. Asymmetrically loaded piezoelectric disks and metallic blocks comprise the unit cells. By using a negative capacitance shunting, a tunable material loss is embedded into the system. With suitable engineering of the induced loss profile, resonating building blocks are designed, which are capable of independently accessing unidirectional zero reflection. A planar metasurface is then created so that constructive interference …
Enhanced Throughput Of Aligned Polyacrylonitrile Nanofiber Manufacturing Via High-Speed Centrifugal Spinning, Jason Glen Ippolito
Enhanced Throughput Of Aligned Polyacrylonitrile Nanofiber Manufacturing Via High-Speed Centrifugal Spinning, Jason Glen Ippolito
Theses and Dissertations
Centrifugal spinning is noteworthy due to its high fiber throughput rate compared to other nanofiber manufacturing platforms. It is capable of producing fibers in the nanoscale diameter range from a multitude of polymers, such as polyacrylonitrile (PAN). With a traditional centrifugal spinner, fiber can be rapidly spun and collected on static posts. However, the use of static posts inevitably forms a dense ring of fiber after a short period of time, and this fiber build up can halt the spinning process. In this work, the factors that influence the throughput and scalability of highly aligned centrifugally spun PAN fibers are …

A Geometrical, Reachable Set Approach For Constrained Pursuit–Evasion Games With Multiple Pursuers And Evaders, Olli Jansson, Matthew W. Harris
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
This paper presents a solution strategy for deterministic time-optimal pursuit–evasion games with linear state constraints, convex control constraints, and linear dynamics that is consistent with linearized relative orbital motion models such as the Clohessy–Wiltshire equations and relative orbital elements. The strategy first generates polytopic inner approximations of the players’ reachable sets by solving a sequence of convex programs. A bisection method then computes the optimal termination time, which is the least time at which a set containment condition is satisfied. The pursuit–evasion games considered are games with (1) a single pursuer and single evader, (2) multiple pursuers and a single …

Development Of The Rf-Meam Interatomic Potential For The Fe-C System To Study The Temperature-Dependent Elastic Properties, Sandesh Risal, Navdeep Singh, Andrew I. Duff, Yan Yao, Li Sun, Samprash Risal, Weihang Zhu
Pacific Faculty Work
One of the major impediments to the computational investigation and design of complex alloys such as steel is the lack of effective and versatile interatomic potentials to perform large-scale calculations. In this study, we developed an RF-MEAM potential for the iron-carbon (Fe-C) system to predict the elastic properties at elevated temperatures. Several potentials were produced by fitting potential parameters to the various datasets containing forces, energies, and stress tensor data generated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The potentials were then evaluated using a two-step filter process. In the first step, the optimized RSME error function of the potential fitting …
Using Bim To Increase The Efficiency Of Energy-Driven Retrofitting Projects, Anne Grego, Shannon Chance, Barry Mcauley
Using Bim To Increase The Efficiency Of Energy-Driven Retrofitting Projects, Anne Grego, Shannon Chance, Barry Mcauley
Conference Papers
The building sector is responsible for nearly 40% of global energy consumption. Many existing buildings have poor thermal insulation and low energy performance, hindering sustainability goals. Energy-driven building retrofitting could address this issue and implementing Building Information Modelling (BIM) in retrofitting can reduce process time, costs, and waste associated with such undertakings. Yet, there is a lack of research and insufficient guidance for implementing BIM in energy-driven retrofitting. A BIM framework is presented to enhance decision-making processes during retrofitting. The aims of this study were to (1) identify BIM technologies and methodologies that could address existing barriers and improve efficiency …

Security-Enhanced Serial Communications, John White, Alexander Beall, Joseph Maurio, Dane Fichter, Dr. Matthew Davis, Dr. Zachary Birnbaum
Military Cyber Affairs
Industrial Control Systems (ICS) are widely used by critical infrastructure and are ubiquitous in numerous industries including telecommunications, petrochemical, and manufacturing. ICS are at a high risk of cyber attack given their internet accessibility, inherent lack of security, deployment timelines, and criticality. A unique challenge in ICS security is the prevalence of serial communication buses and other non-TCP/IP communications protocols. The communication protocols used within serial buses often lack authentication and integrity protections, leaving them vulnerable to spoofing and replay attacks. The bandwidth constraints and prevalence of legacy hardware in these systems prevent the use of modern message authentication and …

A Literary Survey On The Challenges Of Adopting Lean In Aerospace Production And Aviation Maintenance, Seanan C. Lee
Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering
Lean production began as a new method for creating value through the elimination of waste, continuous process improvement by workers, and fostering respect for people. Despite its success in other industries, the significantly lower production volume, the substantially higher complexity, and the service-oriented nature of aviation maintenance demand significant adaptation of Lean principles to be effective. The lack of a holistic study on Lean adoption for aerospace production and aviation maintenance organizations hinders transformation as the two industries are intertwined in product and characteristics. Lean adoption in aerospace production is hindered by the lingering notion that it is an ‘‘automotive …
