The Sava River Basin (SRB) extends across six countries (Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Albania, and Montenegro) and is a major tributary of the Danube River (DR). The Sava River (SR) originates in the alpine region of Slovenia, and, in support of a Slovenian government initiative to increase clean, sustainable energy, multiple hydropower facilities have been constructed within the past ~20 years. Given the importance of this river system for varying demands, including energy production, information about past (paleo) drought and pluvial periods would provide important information to water managers and planners. Seasonal (April–May–June–July–August–September—AMJJAS) streamflow data were obtained for …

Crafting charge transfer channels at titanium dioxide (TiO2) based photoanodes remain a pressing bottleneck in solar-to-chemical conversion technology. Despite the tremendous attempts, TiO2 as the promising photoanode material still suffers from sluggish charge transport kinetics. Herein, we propose an assembly strategy that involves the axial coordination grafting metalloporphyrin-based photosensitizer molecules (MP) onto the surface-modified TiO2 nanorods (NRs) photoanode, forming the composite MP/TiO2 NRs photoelectrode. As expected, the resulted unique MPB/TiO2 NRs photoelectrode displays significantly improved photocurrent density as compared to TiO2 NRs alone and MPA/TiO2 NRs photoelectrode. Scanning …

Cadmium germanium diphosphide (CdGeP2) crystals, with versatile terahertz-generating properties, belong to the chalcopyrite family of nonlinear optical materials. Other widely investigated members of this family are ZnGeP2 and CdSiP2. The room-temperature absorption edge of CdGeP2 is near 1.72 eV (720 nm). Cadmium vacancies, phosphorous vacancies, and germanium-on-cadmium antisites are present in as-grown CdGeP2 crystals. These unintentional intrinsic point defects are best studied below room temperature with electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and optical absorption. Prior to exposure to light, the defects are in charge states that have no unpaired spins. Illuminating a CdGeP2 …

Waste-To-Watts: An Energy Analysis Of Municipal Solid Waste As Fuel, Marianna Fischer, Brandon Lewis, Avary Zachary
2023 Symposium
Across the United States, there are two pressing problems: garbage disposal and electricity generation. Firstly, the infrastructure in place doesn’t properly dispose of or reuse municipal solid waste. In addition, power insecurity is becoming more prominent as power grids are becoming outdated. This project aims to provide an alternative solution for both issues by using a Brayton cycle based waste-to-energy incinerator. The overall system efficiency relies heavily on the feedstock used for incineration. One way efficiency can be increased is through pelletizing trash, ensuring an even burn profile, providing the correct amount of feedstock, and ensuring adequate energy production. However, …

Reliable, carbon-free power generation is increasing in importance. Nuclear-renewable hybrid energy systems (NHES) are a potential solution for current generation challenges, but design and dispatch optimization for these systems remains challenging particularly when stochastic effects, long time horizons and nonlinear modeling are needed. This work presents a multi-scale method for combining the design and dispatch optimization problems for nonlinear NHES over long time horizons. Rather than treating the entire horizon as a single optimization problem, a large number of combined optimization problems are solved for shorter samples of the horizon resulting in distributions of optimal capacities for each of the …

The Photon Counting Histogram Expectation Maximization (PCH-EM) algorithm has recently been reported as a candidate method for the characterization of Deep Sub-Electron Read Noise (DSERN) image sensors. This work describes a comprehensive demonstration of the PCH-EM algorithm applied to a DSERN capable quanta image sensor. The results show that PCH-EM is able to characterize DSERN pixels for a large span of quanta exposure and read noise values. The per-pixel characterization results of the sensor are combined with the proposed Photon Counting Distribution (PCD) model to demonstrate the ability of PCH-EM to predict the ensemble distribution of the device. The agreement …

The detailed case study …
Friction And Heat Transfer Modeling Of The Tool And Workpiece Interface In Friction Stir Welding Of Aa 6061-T6 For Improved Simulation Accuracy, Ryan Melander
Theses and Dissertations
Friction stir welding (FSW) is a solid-state joining process that offers advantages over traditional fusion welding. The amount of heat generated during a FSW process greatly influences the final properties of the weld. The heat is generated through two main mechanisms: friction and plastic deformation, with friction being the larger contributor in a FSW process. There is a need to develop better predictive models of the heat generation and heat transfer in FSW. Almost all models seen in the literature validate temperature predictions on only one side of the tool/workpiece interface, thus ignoring possible inaccuracy that comes from incorrect partitioning …

Evaluating student success in higher education relies heavily on Grade Point Average (GPA), a measure determined by faculty through formative and summative assessments. Faculty determine these grades throughout the student's academic career. Society often equates higher grades with greater intelligence and engagement, assuming students work independently. Grades are also a means to measure or quantify learning and intellectual progress during students' academic careers. However, when students resort to unsanctioned online resources (UORs) using applications like Chegg, Course Hero, and Slader, the student may obtain good grades, but understanding and learning are grossly sacrificed. This study investigates the performance of 100 …
