In this paper, a new natural organic memristor based artificial synaptic device is reported with the memristive film processed by a honey and carbon nanotube (CNT) admixture, that is, honey-CNT memristor. Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and micro-Raman spectroscopy are employed to analyze the morphology and chemical structure of the honey-CNT film. The device …
Physiologically Relevant Fluid Shear Stress Induced Receptor Conversion In Hormone Receptor-Positive (Hr+) Breast Cancer, Jonathan James Cuccia
Physiologically Relevant Fluid Shear Stress Induced Receptor Conversion In Hormone Receptor-Positive (Hr+) Breast Cancer, Jonathan James Cuccia
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among all people in the United States as of 2023 and often has devastating impacts on afflicted patients. Although some treatments show great efficacy against primary breast tumors, none have been able to significantly reduce the mortality rate of breast cancer once it has metastasized to distant sites. In primary, hormone receptor-positive (HR+) breast cancers, endocrine therapies are often used as first-line treatments and are generally well-tolerated. However, as the disease progresses, these previously sensitive cancers can become resistant to endocrine therapies and continue proliferating despite them. Therefore, there is a …

Development And Calibration Of The Lmrpm Mid-Breton River Sediment Diversion Gate Operations, Emily E. Fertitta
LSU Master's Theses
With the rate of coastal land loss in Louisiana, the state is looking for innovative ways to help restore and maintain its coastal wetlands. Sediment diversions are going to be constructed along the Lower Mississippi River to mitigate the issues by diverting river water, sediment and nutrients into adjacent wetlands. Since there are currently no real-world applications of sediment diversions, the Lower Mississippi River Physical Model is a beneficial modeling tool to study the impact sediment diversions and relative sea level rise have on the hydraulics and sediment transport processes in the river. The two river sediment diversions on the …

Membrane fouling is a major hurdle to effective pressure-driven membrane processes, such as microfiltration (MF), ultrafiltration (UF), nanofiltration (NF), and reverse osmosis (RO). Fouling refers to the accumulation of particles, organic and inorganic matter, and microbial cells on the membrane’s external and internal surface, which reduces the permeate flux and increases the needed transmembrane pressure. Various factors affect membrane fouling, including feed water quality, membrane characteristics, operating conditions, and cleaning protocols. Several models have been developed to predict membrane fouling in pressure-driven processes. These models can be divided into traditional empirical, mechanistic, and artificial intelligence (AI)-based models. Artificial neural networks …

Magnesium alloys have received considerable research interest due to their lightweight, high specific strength and excellent castability. However, their plastic deformation is more complicated compared to cubic materials, primarily because their low-symmetry hexagonal closepacked (hcp) crystal structure. Deformation twinning is a crucial plastic deformation mechanism in magnesium, and twins can affect the evolution of microstructure by interacting with other lattice defects, thereby affecting the mechanical properties. This paper provides a review of the interactions between deformation twins and lattice defects, such as solute atoms, dislocations and twins, in magnesium and its alloys. This review starts with interactions between twin boundaries …

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
Pavement defects such as cracks, net cracks, and pit slots can cause potential traffic safety problems. The timely detection and identification play a key role in reducing the harm of various pavement defects. Particularly, the recent development in deep learning-based CNNs has shown competitive performance in image detection and classification. To detect pavement defects automatically and improve effects, a multi-scale mobile attention-based network, which we termed MANet, is proposed to perform the detection of pavement defects. The architecture of the encoder-decoder is used in MANet, where the encoder adopts the MobileNet as the backbone network to extract pavement defect features. …

Cross-modal recipe retrieval has gained prominence due to its ability to retrieve a text representation given an image representation and vice versa. Clustering these recipe representations based on similarity is essential to retrieve relevant information about unknown food images. Existing studies cluster similar recipe representations in the latent space based on class names. Due to inter-class similarity and intraclass variation, associating a recipe with a class name does not provide sufficient knowledge about recipes to determine similarity. However, recipe title, ingredients, and cooking actions provide detailed knowledge about recipes and are a better determinant of similar recipes. In this study, …

Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the time resolved heat transfer to drops rolling or sliding along inclined, subcritical heated non-wetting surfaces. Results were experimentally obtained using IR imaging for a smooth hydrophobic surface and post as well as rib structured superhydrophobic surfaces of varying solid fraction (f_s = 0.06 - 0.5). Tests were performed at varying inclination angle (α = 10, 15, 20, and 25°), drop volume (12, 20, 30, and 40 μL), and surface temperature (T_w = 50, 65, and 80 °C). Rib structured superhydrophobic surfaces were explored for drops moving parallel and perpendicular to the rib structures. The findings indicate …

A Unified Switched Nonlinear Dynamic Model Of An Electric Vehicle For Performance Evaluation, Dibyendu Khan, Kuntal Mandal, Anjan Kumar Ray, Abdelali El Aroudi
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
The advanced modeling and estimation of overall system dynamics play a vital role in electric vehicles (EVs), as the selection of components in the powertrain and prediction of performance are the key market qualifiers. The state-space averaged model and small-signal transfer function model are useful for assessing long-term behavior in system-level analysis and for designing the controller parameters, respectively. Both models take less computation time but ignore the high-frequency switching dynamics. Therefore, these two models could be impractical for the development and testing of EV prototypes. On the other hand, the multi-domain model in available simulation tools gives in-depth information …

Around ranging from 5-7% of CO2 was generated during PC production. Consequently, the concrete and PC production are change in the environment. So; it has become very important for the construction industry to focus on minimizing environmental pollution, energy consumption reduction. Several pozzolanic cementitious materials can be added as a fractional replacement of cement in concrete to reduce PC impact on environmental pollution. Pozzolanic materials include PC as one of its main components as well …
Adaptive Control Allocation For Unmanned Aerial Vehicles With Model Uncertainties, Eren Sarioglu
Adaptive Control Allocation For Unmanned Aerial Vehicles With Model Uncertainties, Eren Sarioglu
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Model uncertainties and effector degradation carry risks to weaken the performance of any aerial system and endanger operation during flight. To this end, over-actuated aerial systems are used in flight operations to take precautions for possible incidents, which may result in improper control or a fall of the aerial vehicle. Adaptive control and adaptive control allocation methods are effective solutions for over-actuated uncertain aerial vehicles to overcome these phenomena because of their ability to estimate unknown effects. In this work, a literature search for control allocation methods is first revealed. An adaptive control allocation solution is introduced and implemented for …

The exchange-correlation functional is at the core of density functional theory (DFT) and determines the accuracy of DFT in describing the interactions among electrons/ions in solids and molecules. The strongly constrained and appropriately normed functional (SCAN) and its derivatives, regularized SCAN (rSCAN) and regularized-restored SCAN (r2SCAN), are particularly promising due to their remarkable overall accuracy in the description of various properties while retaining a high computational efficiency as compared to hybrid functionals. However, an exhaustive assessment on the performance of these functionals in predicting the finite-temperature lattice constant of solids is still lacking. Here, we systematically study the room-temperature lattice …

Fused deposition modeling (FDM) is one of the most popular additive manufacturing (AM) technologies for reasons including its low cost and versatility. However, like many AM technologies, the FDM process is sensitive to changes in the feedstock material. Utilizing a new feedstock requires a time-consuming trial-and-error process to identify optimal settings for a large number of process parameters. The experience required to efficiently calibrate a printer to a new feedstock acts as a barrier to entry. To enable greater accessibility to non-expert users, this paper presents the first system for autonomous calibration of low-cost FDM 3D printers that demonstrates optimizing …

We present results from a small-scale randomized controlled trial that evaluates the impact of just-in-time interventions on the academic outcomes of N = 65 undergraduate students in a STEM course. Intervention messaging content was based on machine learning forecasting models of data collected from 537 students in the same course over the preceding 3 years. Trial results show that the intervention produced a statistically significant increase in the proportion of students that achieved a passing grade. The outcomes point to the potential and promise of just-in-time interventions for STEM learning and the need for larger fully-powered randomized controlled trials.

Over a century ago, copper mills on the Keweenaw Peninsula of Lake Superior sluiced 64 million metric tonnes (MMT) of tailings into coastal waters, creating a metal-rich “halo”. Here we show that relatively small discharges can spread widely in time and space. Mass Mill (2.9 MMT) dumping into Lake Superior also illustrates the complexity of interactions with Indigenous Peoples. A combination of aerial photos, LiDAR, and a microscope technique for distinguishing end-member particles traces the migration of tailings. The clay fraction spread rapidly across Keweenaw Bay and curled into terminal L’Anse Bay, within tribal Reservation boundaries. The coarse stamp sand …

When a fluid in turbulent motion is tagged by a nonuniform concentration of ideal tracers, the mean velocity of the tracers may not match with the mean velocity of the fluid flow. This implies that conventional particle tracking velocimetry will not produce the mean flow of a turbulent flow unless the particle seeding is homogeneous. In this work, we consider the problem of mean flow estimation from a set of particle tracks obtained in a situation of nonhomogeneous seeding. To compensate the bias caused by the nonhomogeneous particle seeding, we propose a modified particle tracking velocimetry method. This method is …

Bound Preserving Numerical Methods For Infiltration, Arnob Barua
LSU Master's Theses
Simulating the infiltration process in variably saturated media by solving Richards' Equation (RE) remains a computationally challenging task. The degenerate parabolic nature of RE, along with the strongly nonlinear coefficients, makes it very difficult to obtain accurate solutions with conventional numerical methods unless highly refined meshes are used. That is, in the conventional Finite Element Method (FEM), the grid size has to be fine enough to ensure convergence and limit non-physical oscillations, which is computationally expensive. This research aims to develop a second-order accurate FEM discretization with no non-physical oscillations for RE on unstructured meshes which will converge faster than …

Neutrosophic Dombi fuzzy graph is an advancement of the Dombi fuzzy graph and intuitionistic Dombi fuzzy graph. In this paper, we have initiated a new concept of the Fermatean neutrosophic Dombi fuzzy graph. Further, we identified a few products of the direct, cartesian, composition of Fermatean neutrosophic Dombi fuzzy graphs. Also, we examined the related proposition with suitable illustrations with graphs.
