Non-Planar 3d Printing Of Thermosetting Prepolymers, Junaid Abid Ali
Non-Planar 3d Printing Of Thermosetting Prepolymers, Junaid Abid Ali
Master's Theses
Additive manufacturing or three-dimensional (3D) printing is an advanced process of manufacturing that challenges traditional manufacturing methodologies. However, the current 3D printing process does exhibit specific limitations. It generates printing paths that are in a horizontal plane, proving inadequate for printing curved or non-flat structures. This study established a printing procedure capable of simultaneously executing printing in X, Y, and Z directions. The limitations posed by conventional 3D printing lead to the poor surface quality of curved printed objects. In contrast, non-planar 3D printing provides smoother surfaces. This work developed a program capable of producing non-planar print paths for the …

Role Of Binder On Yield Strength Of Polycaprolactone/Dimethylsulfone Composites For Bio-Applications, Kyung-Eun Min, Jae-Won Jang, Sung Yi, Cheolhee Kim
Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Polycaprolactone (PCL) and dimethylsulfone (DMSO2) composites can tailor the properties of scaffold materials, allowing their use in bone tissue engineering. With an increase in DMSO2 content, the modulus of the material increases but not the yield strength. In order to increase yield strength, a binder was added. However, the optimization of the content and the mixing process of the binder were not optimized in the previous studies. In this study, gamma-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (A-174) was used as a binder to increase the strength of a composite. Four different mixing processes were employed based on the binder mixing sequence. The binders with content …

Estimating product drying kinetics is critical to obtain the best drying process without compromising product quality and necessitates the development of numerical drying models. This research aims to compare the prediction models developed using artificial neural network (ANN) and adaptive network-based fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), two popular machine learning approaches in the recent years. Zucchini slices were chosen as samples and dried in a solar-assisted microwave belt dryer at 0.245 m/min belt speed and microwave powers of 0.7, 1, and 1.4 kW. On the data set obtained by computing the moisture content and drying rate values, prediction models were developed …

Though open source data acquisition (DAQ) systems have been published, closed source proprietary systems are the standard despite often being prohibitively expensive. High costs, however, limit access to high-quality DAQ in low-resource settings. In many cases the functions executed by the closed source and proprietary DAQ cards could be carried out by an open source alternative; however, as desired function count increases, the simplicity of integrating the designs decreases substantially. Although the global library of open source electronic designs is expanding rapidly, and there is clear evidence they can reduce costs for scientists one device at a time, they are …

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
The public health crisis of antibiotic resistance is a growing threat across the world that is only expected to intensify in the coming years. The cycling of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment via urban stormwater runoff is one means by which humans are exposed to resistant bacteria as traditional gray stormwater infrastructure facilitates the transport of resistance elements into water bodies utilized by the public. In this review, existing research on the occurrence of ARGs in urban stormwater runoff is critically reviewed with the goal of determining the role of stormwater in the dissemination and development of antibiotic …

Impact Of Corrosion Inhibitors On Antibiotic Resistance, Metal Resistance, And Microbial Communities In Drinking Water, Lee K. Kimbell, Emily Lou Lamartina, Stan Kohls, Yin Wang, Ryan J. Newton, Patrick J. Mcnamara
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Corrosion inhibitors, including zinc orthophosphate, sodium orthophosphate, and sodium silicate, are commonly used to prevent the corrosion of drinking water infrastructure. Metals such as zinc are known stressors for antibiotic resistance selection, and phosphates can increase microbial growth in drinking water distribution systems (DWDS). Yet, the influence of corrosion inhibitor type on antimicrobial resistance in DWDS is unknown. Here, we show that sodium silicates can decrease antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic-resistance genes (ARGs), while zinc orthophosphate increases ARB and ARGs in source water microbial communities. Based on controlled bench-scale studies, zinc orthophosphate addition significantly increased the abundance of ARB …

A Focused Review On Recycling And Hydrolysis Techniques Of Polyethylene Terephthalate, Hossein Abedsoltan
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is used in textile and packaging industries. The main source of PET production is fossil fuels with limited capacity. Also, PET products are single use that transform into high volumes of wastes, causing ecosystem problems. Recycling is proposed to confront this challenge. The four major PET recycling techniques are mechanical, chemical, pyrolysis, and enzymatic. Mechanical, pyrolysis, and enzymatic techniques have constrained capabilities to manage PET waste. Chemical recycling is the potential path to expanding recycling PET waste with possibility of upcycling and addressing dirty waste streams. Several chemical methods are introduced and discussed in literature. The five …

Predicting University Campus Parking Demand Using Machine Learning Models, Sohil Paudel, Matthew Vechione, Okan Gurbuz
Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Parking demand at university campuses has been an issue for decades and is gradually increasing each year. With limited capacity, space, and funds to expand parking facilities, there is a dire need to better understand parking behavior on a university campus so that universities can better utilize the limited resources available. One methodology that has been used by Metropolitan Planning Organizations to predict traveler behavior is known as travel demand modeling, where the most common modeling technique is a four-step procedure that utilizes socioeconomic data to predict current and future traffic volumes in a network (e.g., a city). This study …

Bilateral Arm Movements Are Coordinated Via Task-Dependent Negotiations Between Independent And Codependent Control, But Not By A “Coupling” Control Policy, Nick M. Kitchen, Jisung Yuk, Andrzej Przybyla, Robert A. Scheidt, Robert L. Sainburg
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Prior research has shown that coordination of bilateral arm movements might be attributed to either control policies that minimize performance and control costs regardless of bilateral symmetry or by control coupling, which activates bilaterally homologous muscles as a single unit to achieve symmetric performance. We hypothesize that independent bimanual control (movements of one arm are performed without influence on the other) and codependent bimanual control (two arms are constrained to move together with high spatiotemporal symmetry) are two extremes on a coordination spectrum that can be negotiated to meet infinite variations in task demands. To better understand and distinguish between …

Uncertainties In Retrieval Of Remote Sensing Reflectance From Ocean Color Satellite Observations, Eder I. Herrera Estrella
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Ocean Color radiometry uses remote sensing to interpret ocean dynamics by retrieving remote sensing reflectance () from satellite imagery at different scales and over different time periods. spectrum characterizes the ocean color that we observe, and from which we can discern concentrations of chlorophyll, organic and inorganic particles, and carbon fluxes in the ocean and atmosphere. is derived from the total radiance at the top of the atmosphere (TOA). However, it only represents up to ten percent of the total signal. Hence, the retrieval of from the total radiance at TOA involves the application of atmospheric correction …
Construction And Performance Optimization Of Bioconjugated Nanosensors For Early Detection Of Breast Cancer And Pro-Inflammatory Diseases, Pooja Gaikwad

In recent years, nanosensors have emerged as a tool with strong potential in medical diagnostics. Single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) based optical nanosensors have notably garnered interest due to the unique characteristics of their near-infrared fluorescence emission, including tissue transparency, photostability, and various chiralities with discrete absorption and fluorescence emission bands. Additionally, the optoelectronic properties of SWCNT are sensitive to the surrounding environment, which makes them suitable for in vitro and in vivo biosensing. Single-stranded (ss) DNA-wrapped SWCNTs have been reported as optical nanosensors for cancers and metabolic diseases. Breast cancer and cardiovascular diseases are the most common causes of death …
Quantifying Temperature-, Pressure-, And Nuclear Quantum Effects On Hydrophobic And Hydrophilic Water-Mediated Interactions, Justin T. Engstler
Quantifying Temperature-, Pressure-, And Nuclear Quantum Effects On Hydrophobic And Hydrophilic Water-Mediated Interactions, Justin T. Engstler
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Water-mediated interactions (WMIs) are responsible for diverse processes in aqueous solutions, including protein folding and nanoparticle aggregation. WMI may be affected by changes in temperature and pressure, and hence, they can alter chemical/physical processes that occur in aqueous environments. Traditionally, attention has been focused on hydrophobic interactions while, in comparison, the role of hydrophilic and hybrid (hydrophobic–hydrophilic) interactions have been mostly overlooked. Here, we study the role of T and P on the WMI between nanoscale (i) hydrophobic–hydrophobic, (ii) hydrophilic–hydrophilic, and (iii) hydrophilic–hydrophobic pairs of (hydroxylated/non-hydroxylated) graphene-based surfaces. We find that hydrophobic, hydrophilic, and hybrid interactions are all sensitive to …
Tunable Linear And Nonlinear Metasurfaces Based On Hybrid Gold-Graphene Plasmons, Matthew Feinstein
Tunable Linear And Nonlinear Metasurfaces Based On Hybrid Gold-Graphene Plasmons, Matthew Feinstein
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Optical Metasurfaces are planar structures that are patterned with subwavelength structures and are very thin compared to the wavelength of light. Despite their thinness, these structured materials can strongly interact with incident light to effect the functionalities of conventional optical components, such as rotation of the polarization state, beam steering, lensing, spectral filtering, and holography, to name a few. Metasurfaces can also facilitate nonlinear optical effects, such as the mixing of beams at different frequencies to generate a beam at a new frequency.
The ability to alter the behavior of a metasurface during operation is highly desired for applications such …

A Numerical Investigation Realizing The Flow Structure And Heat Transfer Performance Of The Potential Impinging Jets, Mohammed Sami Uddin Khan
Theses
The demand for improvement in the performance of gas turbines has led to the consideration of flows at increasingly high temperatures, but this introduces challenges in terms of maintaining their structural integrity and preventing overheating. To respond to these challenges, gas turbine manufacturers have turned to internal cooling, and jet impingement provides an effective solution for cooling the leading edge of the blades of gas turbines. In this study, the author numerically simulated the cooling performance of the leading edge of the blades of a gas turbine under constant heat flux by using five configurations of jet impingement: a steady …

Additive manufacturing techniques are being used more and more to perform the precise fabrication of engineering components with complex geometries. The heterogeneity of additively manufactured microstructures deteriorates the mechanical integrity of products. In this paper, we printed AISI 316L stainless steel using the additive manufacturing technique of laser metal deposition. Both single-phase and dual-phase substructures were formed in the grain interiors. Electron backscatter diffraction and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy indicate that Si, Mo, S, Cr were enriched, while Fe was depleted along the substructure boundaries. In situ micro-compression testing was performed at room temperature along the [001] orientation. The dual-phase substructures …

For continual scaling in microelectronics, new processes for precise high volume fabrication are required. Area-selective atomic layer deposition (ASALD) can provide an avenue for self-aligned material patterning and offers an approach to correct edge placement errors commonly found in top-down patterning processes. Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides also offer great potential in scaled microelectronic devices due to their high mobilities and few-atom thickness. In this work, we report ASALD of MoS2 thin films by deposition with MoF6 and H2S precursor reactants. The inherent selectivity of the MoS2 atomic layer deposition (ALD) process is demonstrated by growth …
Analysis Of Multi-Agent Routing Solution Methodologies Exploring A Mosaic Warfare Strategy, Stephen D. Donnel
Analysis Of Multi-Agent Routing Solution Methodologies Exploring A Mosaic Warfare Strategy, Stephen D. Donnel
Theses and Dissertations
Recognizing that communication between assets may be possible locally but not globally (e.g., due to disruptions to a communication network), Mosaic Warfare requires the movement and operation of multiple, dispersed assets in smaller groups (i.e., tiles), within which exist hierarchical, functional relationships between assets. This research first evaluates a heuristic for an enterprise of aerial assets comprised of airborne sensors, command and control, and strike aircraft seeking to move towards and destroy stationary targets. Next, we examine routing multiple assets of different types over a network to service demands in a collaborative manner, in that, when servicing a demand, …

Significant progress in the development of micro and nanoscale devices has been observed for the past three decades. The thermal transportation in these small-length scales varies significantly, and it is difficult to explain the underlying physics using the pre-existing theoretical formulations. When the bulk dimension of a system is comparable to or smaller than the mean free path (MFP) of the thermal carriers, classical theories, such as Fourier’s Law of heat conduction, are unable to accurately explain the system energy dynamics. The phenomena of energy transit and conversion at the micro to nanoscale is an interesting topic of research due …

The complex structural and chemical changes that occur during polymerization and pyrolysis critically affect material properties but are difficult to characterize in situ. This work presents a novel, experimentally validated methodology for modeling the complete polymerization and pyrolysis processes for phenolic resin using reactive molecular dynamics. The polymerization simulations produced polymerized structures with mass densities of 1.24 ± 0.01 g/cm3 and Young's moduli of 3.50 ± 0.64 GPa, which are in good agreement with experimental values. The structural properties of the subsequently pyrolyzed structures were also found to be in good agreement with experimental X-ray data for the phenolic-derived carbon …
