A Low-Complexity Algorithm To Determine Spacecraft Trajectories, Sirani Perera
A Low-Complexity Algorithm To Determine Spacecraft Trajectories, Sirani Perera
Math Department Colloquium Series
The growing traffic within the Cislunar region has created a need for computationally effective methods to obtain the trajectories of spacecraft in the Cislunar region. By developing algorithms with low time and arithmetic complexities, we can effectively address these needs.
In this talk, we will present a mathematical model that uses interpolation and boundary conditions to obtain trajectories for satellites based on the principles of three-body dynamics. Following the model, we propose a low- complexity algorithm to generate satellite trajectories. Once the algorithm is proposed, we will apply it to the relevant periodic orbits in the Cislunar region. Finally, we …

Review Paper: Low Salinity Water Injection For Enhanced Oil Recovery, Mahmoud Ali, Moamen Talaat, Abd El-Rahman Rashwan
The Undergraduate Research Journal
Low salinity water injection (LSWI) is one of the leading techniques in terms of enhancing oil recovery in sandstone and carbonate formations. Many studies and lab experiments were performed on the LSWI applications. Some studies have pointed out multiple negative observations, while other studies have shown the positive potential of using LSWI in enhancing oil recovery. However, the technology used in LSWI applications is still considered new and more studies need to be performed to figure out new technologies that are low-cost and more efficient. This review paper examines LSWI by analyzing the benefits and drawbacks of employing LSWI in …

Introduction. To reduce the stream of solid waste going to landfills, innovative means for beneficial use are essential. The diversity and volume of organic wastes pose singular problems and opportunities for recovery and circularity. Common processes for organics include conversion to biofuels and carbonization to biochar, typically done by torrefaction (dry pyrolysis). Research on biochar explores its potential as pollutant adsorbent, agricultural or polluted soil amendment, biofuel (directly or as feedstock), and for carbon sequestration (Ighalo et al., 2022; Cavali et al., 2023). Recently, other processes at lower temperatures such as hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) offer new possibilities (Seshadri et al., …

Better Models For High-Stakes Tasks, Jacob Ryan Epifano
Theses and Dissertations
The intersection of machine learning and healthcare has the potential to transform medical diagnosis, treatment, and research. Machine learning models can analyze vast amounts of medical data and identify patterns that may be too complex for human analysis. However, one of the major challenges in this field is building trust between users and the model. Due to things like high false alarm rate and the black box nature of machine learning models, patients and medical professionals need to understand how the model arrives at its recommendations. In this work, we present several methods that aim to improve machine learning models …

Small-Scale Testing Of Passive Fire Protection Systems For Structures On The Wildland-Urban Interface, Makenzie Wilson, Thomas H. Fletcher, Taylor J. Sorensen
Faculty Publications
The average intensity and frequency of wildland fires have been on the rise over the years due to climate change. This, in combination with recent expansion and growth of rural areas, has led to an increased risk of wildfire damage for structures in the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI). This paper proposes a permanent passive fire protection system that is built into the structure. A flame-resistant material would be attached to the sheathing underneath the roofing and siding material. This system would allow the easily replaceable exterior components of the structure to burn while leaving the interior of the structure protected. Small-scale …

The Role Of Leading-Edge Serrations In Controlling The Flow Over Owls’ Wing, Tanner Saussaman, Asif Nafi, David Charland, Hadar Ben-Gida, Roi Gurka
Physics and Engineering Science
We studied the effects of leading-edge serrations on the flow dynamics developed over an owl wing model. Owls are predatory birds. Most owl species are nocturnal, with some active during the day. The nocturnal ones feature stealth capabilities that are partially attributed to their wing microfeatures. One of these microfeatures is small rigid combs (i.e. serrations) aligned at an angle with respect to the incoming flow located at the wings' leading-edge region of the primaries. These serrations are essentially passive flow control devices that enhance some of the owls' flight characteristics, such as aeroacoustics and, potentially, aerodynamics. We performed a …

A Memory Contention Responsive Hash Join Algorithm Design And Implementation On Apache Asterixdb, Giulliano Silva Zanotti Siviero
Computer Science and Engineering Master's Theses
Efficient data management is crucial in complex computer systems, and Database Management Systems (DBMS) are indispensable for handling and processing large datasets. In DBMSs that concurrently execute multiple queries, adapting to varying workloads is desirable. Yet, predicting the fluctuating quantity and size of queries in such environments proves challenging. Over-allocating resources to a single query can impede the execution of future queries while under-allocating resources to a query expecting increased workload can lead to significant processing delays. Moreover, join operations place substantial demands on memory. This resource’s availability fluctuates as queries enter and exit the DBMS. The development of join …

Stomatal Opening Efficiency Is Controlled By Cell Wall Organization In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Sedighe Keynia, Leila Jaafar, You Zhou, Charles T. Anderson, Joseph A. Turner
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
Stomatal function in plants is regulated by the nanoscale architecture of the cell wall and turgor pressure, which together control stomatal pore size to facilitate gas exchange and photosynthesis. The mechanical properties of the cell wall and cell geometry are critical determinants of stomatal dynamics. However, the specific biomechanical functions of wall constituents, for example, cellulose and pectins, and their impact on the work required to open or close the stomatal pore are unclear. Here, we use nanoindentation in normal and lateral directions, computational modeling, and microscopic imaging of cells from the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana to investigate the precise …

Investigations On Potassium Penta Borate Based Semi-Organic Materials For Nonlinear Optical Applications, Kamatchi K
Theses and Dissertations
Crystal growth has attained the pinnacle of a point in the current research owing to the requirement of the single crystals in the frontier field of nonlinear optics. Organic crystals exhibit high transparency, high laser damage threshold and de-localized π electron cloud. But they possess weak mechanical stability. In contrast, the inorganic crystals exhibit magnanimous mechanical and thermal properties but have modest nonlinear optical property. If we combine these two materials, then we can obtain the semi-organic materials.
Among the organic materials, the amino acids are chosen and they are mixed with inorganic material potassium penta borate octa hydrate. They …

A New Approach For The Statistical Convergence Over Non-Archimedean Fields In Neutrosophic Normed Spaces, Jeyaraman M., Iswariya S.
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
The goal of the research involves elaborating on the topics of statistical convergence, including statistical Cauchy sequences within non-Archimedean Neutrosophic normed spaces, as well as achieving specific useful conclusions. The present research shows how, within a non-Archimedean field, certain sections of statistically convergent sequences that could not be true often become true. Likewise, we created statistically complete and statistically continuous spaces for such regions that demonstrated certain essential facts. κ indicates a complete field of non-Archimedean and non-trivially valued research.

An important method for finding the optimal solution for linear and nonlinear models is the graphical method, which is used if the linear or nonlinear mathematical model contains one, two, or three variables. The models that contain only two variables are among the most models for which the optimal solution has been obtained graphically, whether these models are linear or non-linear in references and research that are concerned with the science of operations research, when the data of the issue under study is classical data. In this research, we will present a study through, which we present the graphical method …

Evaluating Effect Of Operating Speed On Crashes Of Rural Two-Lane Highways, Fahida Rahman, Xu Zhang, Mei Chen
Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research
Crashes on a roadway are influenced by various factors, including but not limited to road geometries, traffic volume, and environmental conditions. Among these factors, traffic volume and segment length are commonly used to predict crashes. Recently, the role of speed in crashes has been recognized as a significant factor, prompting its incorporation as a variable in crash modeling. Nevertheless, previous research studies that examined speed-related factors are mostly concentrated on higher functional class roads where speed data are abundant. Lack of actual speed data has limited the scope of such a study on rural two-lane highways. Due to recent advancements …

Automatic Cardiac Mri Image Segmentation And Mesh Generation, Ziyuan Li
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Segmenting and reconstructing cardiac anatomical structures from magnetic resonance (MR) images is essential for the quantitative measurement and automatic diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases [1]. However, manual evaluation of the time-series cardiac MRI (CMRI) obtained during routine clinical care are laborious, inefficient, and tends to produce biased and non-reproducible results [2]. This thesis proposes an end-to-end pipeline for automatically segmenting short-axis (SAX) CMRI images and generating high-quality 2D and 3D meshes suitable for finite element analysis. The main advantage of our approach is that it can not only work as a stand-alone pipeline for the automatic CMR image segmentation and mesh …

Bioremediation of oil spills occurs when indigenous microbes metabolize petroleum hydrocarbons. Rapid proliferation of hydrocarbon-consuming bacteria near the oil-water interface is vital to optimizing the oil biodegradation rate. Adding nanoparticles (NPs) to microbial systems can enhance the bacterial growth rate. However, the role of NP source material and surface charge on their ability to impact bacterial growth and oil-water interface characteristics is poorly understood. Here, we investigate the role of NP composition and surface chemistry on the growth rate of hydrocarbon-consuming bacteria and its attachment to the oil-water interface. We use Alcanivorax borkumensis as a model organism because of its …
