The lymphatic system plays a vital role in maintaining fluid balance in living tissue and serves as a pathway for the transport of antigen, immune cells, and metastatic cancer cells. In this study, we investigate how the movement of cells through a contracting lymphatic vessel differs from steady flow, using a lattice Boltzmann-based computational model. Our model consists of cells carried by flow in a 2D vessel with regularly spaced, bi-leaflet valves that ensure net downstream flow as the vessel walls contract autonomously in response to calcium and nitric oxide levels regulated by stretch and shear stress levels. The orientation …

Single point incremental forming (SPIF) is a flexible manufacturing process that has applications in industries ranging from biomedical to automotive. In addition to rapid prototyping, which requires easy adaptations in geometry or material for design changes, control of the final part properties is desired. One strategy that can be implemented is stress superposition, which is the application of additional stresses during an existing manufacturing process. Tensile and compressive stresses applied during SPIF showed significant effects on the resulting microstructure in stainless steel 304 truncated square pyramids. Specifically, the amount of martensitic transformation was increased through stress superposed incremental forming. Finite …

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Preweaning mortality (PWM) is a economic and animal well-being issue for swine producers in the US. On average, producers face about a 16% pre-weaning mortality. A significant portion of this, around 6%, is because sows accidentally overlay their piglets in farrowing crates. The posture behavior of sow plays a vital role in overlaying piglets and this behavior has a significant effect on farrowing crate dimensions. This study aims to explore the interplay between farrowing crate size, mortality rates, and postural behavior in post-farrowing sows. This study employed three farrowing stalls: Traditional (T), Expanded creep area (C), and Expanded sow area …

Sugar content is a superior quality indicator for the post-harvesting and ripening status of climacteric fruits. Total soluble solids (TSS) represented by °Brix index is a measure of the sugar content. The conventional way to measure TSS is by invasive (IN) technique using manual or digital refractometers. While non-invasive (NIN) infrared refractometer devices have been developed in recent years for various agricultural and food science applications, its accuracy to measure fruit TSS directly is not straightforward, as the device is only dedicated to uses for a specific fruit. This study aims to investigate the suitability of the use of a …

Experimental Investigation Of Liquid Metal Embrittlement In Hot-Dip Galvanized Structural Steel, Amelia Mcnamee
Experimental Investigation Of Liquid Metal Embrittlement In Hot-Dip Galvanized Structural Steel, Amelia Mcnamee
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This research investigated the liquid metal embrittlement (LME) of hot-dipped galvanized structural steel. The relationship between stress and failure time was analyzed to evaluate the potential presence of a critical stress threshold beyond which LME may occur. A testing apparatus to induce axial stress was designed and assembled in-house. A36 low carbon steel was tested in this study. Different deadweight loadings were applied to the testing sample along the axial direction. The test temperature was maintained by a programmable furnace while the sample gauge section was submerged in a molten zinc bath. Failure time and total displacement of the steel …
Implementation Of Cavity Vortex Generators To Mitigate Stall And Ice Accretion On The Naca 0012, Eric Pernell
Implementation Of Cavity Vortex Generators To Mitigate Stall And Ice Accretion On The Naca 0012, Eric Pernell
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
With the growing environmental concerns of international aviation carbon emissions are driven by the ever-increasing commercial aviation traffic. This study aims to increase the aerodynamic efficiency of the NACA 0012, by implementing cavity vortex generators with the intent to increase the effective stall angle without a substantial increase of drag. This study is performed with Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) at a low Reynolds of 5.0E+04 with varying cavity depths along the leading edge. The depths study is placed at 10 percent cord at depths of 3, 5, and 10 percent cord. All cavity vortex generators effectively increased the stall angle …
Environmental Assessment Of Biomass/ Torrefied Biomass And Waste Coal Co-Fired Power Plants With The Incorporation Of Carbon Capture And Storage Technologies, Surja Sarkar
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Climate change is a worldwide problem that has recently garnered significant attention in recent years. While widespread emissions of greenhouse gases, mainly CO2, from the combustion of fossil fuels, contribute to global warming, biomass-based heat and electricity generation, on the other hand, is rapidly growing due to its smaller carbon footprint, aiding in attaining the goal of zero carbon emissions. In this study, the environmental assessment of the waste coal and biomass/ torrefied biomass co-fired power plants was completed using the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology through the performance assessment of the co-fired power plants using the commercial …
Detecting Bearing Race Defects With Inductive Magnetic Reluctance Sensors And Artificial Neural Networks, Collin Daly
Detecting Bearing Race Defects With Inductive Magnetic Reluctance Sensors And Artificial Neural Networks, Collin Daly
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This work proposes a method of detecting physical damage to bearing races in a rotational assembly by means of magnetic reluctance sensors generating a signal from a rotating gear-tooth wheel. A nominally sinusoidal signal is generated based on the rotation of a gearwheel with regularly spaced voids and lands. Detection is based on the time variance of the signal periodically in relation to the gearwheel and the bearing damage. The purpose of this work is to propose a process to detect and classify bearing race defects using existing sensors and neural networks for hazardous area equipment applications.
Effects Of Additions On The Microstructure, Macrostructure, And Mechanical Properties Of Gray Iron, Evan J. Carter
Effects Of Additions On The Microstructure, Macrostructure, And Mechanical Properties Of Gray Iron, Evan J. Carter
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The iron matrix is a major component of the gray iron (GI) microstructure, which is the transformation product of austenite during solidification. It is generally accepted that the structure of the austenite will impact the final grain structure and thus the properties of GI. Refinement of the austenite grain structure has the potential to increase the strength of GI. Knowledge of controlling austenite grain size with common alloy additions in GI is very limited and is investigated in this research. Utilizing the DAAS heat treatment process, the austenite grain boundaries can be retained and observed directly. The observations were correlated …
