Modeling Of Nearshore Wave Transformations Behind Submerged Breakwaters, Mona Mahmoud Abdelay, Ibrahim Mohamed Rashwan, Ahmed Shalby, Hewida Mohamed Omara
Journal of Engineering Research
Breakwaters can generally be divided into three categories based on where the sea level is: submerged breakwater, emerged breakwater, and lower limit breakwater. Nearshore barriers with an underwater structure called submerged breakwaters are used to dissipate the force of wave strikes and safeguard the shoreline. The wave transmission coefficient value can be used to assess submerged breakwaters' contribution to the wave energy decrease. In the past mathematical and physical models were used to understand how the submerged breakwater affects incoming wave energy, hydrodynamic processes, and morphological changes. In the present study, the MIKE21 SW software as the numerical model was …

Exemplary Studies On The Torsional Response Of Single Pile In Contaminated Sand, Ahmed Nasr, Waseim Azzam, Nada Ramadan
Journal of Engineering Research
Deep foundations, including piles, are employed in types of coastal soil because the soil in such regions may be subjected to several variables that alter the engineering features of the soil, like oil contamination. Together with the loads caused by supported superstructures, the pile foundations may also be susceptible to torsional loads from eccentric, horizontal loads brought on by winds, earthquakes, ship accidents, and waves. Tests have been conducted in this laboratory investigation to examine the behavior of piles under torsional load (T) in polluted sandy soil. Also, tests investigated how the Lp/Dp ratio affected the piles' bearing capacity. Details …

The Effect Of An Existing Tunnel And A Newly Excavated Tunnel On Ground Loss Beneath Sand Slope-3d Numerical Study, Ashraf Nazir, Ahmed Nasr, Asmaa Saeed
Journal of Engineering Research
Abstract- Most researchers perform their numerical models for tunnels by modeling perfectly horizontal ground surfaces above the tunnels. The prediction of surface settlement of a sandy slope due to the interaction mechanism between the slope and the tunnels is one of the critical problems in urban areas. As a result, in this work, a numerical analysis using PLAXIS 3D TUNNEL has been performed to investigate the effect of tunnel excavation on the deformation of a shallow sandy slope, and empirically by the Herzog method. The study also assesses the influence of parameters on slope deformation that have not been …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Electricity theft can cause economic damage and even increase the risk of outage. Recently, many methods have implemented electricity theft detection on smart meter data. However, how to conduct detection on the dataset without any label still remains challenging. In this article, we propose a novel unsupervised two-stage approach under the assumption that the training set is contaminated by attacks. Specifically, the method consists of two stages: (1) a Gaussian mixture model is employed to cluster consumption patterns with respect to different habits of electricity usage, and with the goal of improving the accuracy of the model in the posterior …

The Ecological Responses To Hydroperiod Of Wetland Plant Species Determined By Manipulated Soil Surface Elevation (Marsh Organs), Brandon Wolff
LSU Master's Theses
As sea level rise, subsidence, and abandonment of natural deltaic processes due to a highly engineered Mississippi River continue to threaten Louisiana’s coastal wetlands, the need for a system-wide understanding of natural wetland land-building and preservation processes has never been greater. A key component of any wetland is the ever-changing water environment that periodically floods and dries the marsh platforms. The flooding depth, duration, and frequency, known as the hydroperiod, along with salinity and soil fertility are key determining factors of vegetation and marsh types at a particular location. Different types of vegetation will have different growth characteristics such as …

Three-dimensional (3D) cell cultures have emerged as valuable tools in cancer research, offering significant advantages over traditional two-dimensional (2D) cell culture systems. In 3D cell cultures, cancer cells are grown in an environment that more closely mimics the 3D architecture and complexity of in vivo tumors. This approach has revolutionized cancer research by providing a more accurate representation of the tumor microenvironment (TME) and enabling the study of tumor behavior and response to therapies in a more physiologically relevant context. One of the key benefits of 3D cell culture in cancer research is the ability to recapitulate the complex interactions …

Performance Of Photocatalytic Oxidizing Air Cleaners In Different Experimental Setups – A Review, Giovanni Cerrato, Nelson Fumo
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Photocatalytic oxidizing (PCO) air cleaners are offered for the abatement of gaseous pollutants (i.e., Volatile Organic Compounds or VOCs). However, due to a lack of testing standards, the overall characterization of the technology's effectiveness has been met with conflicting results. Different studies use varying experimental setups, test conditions, and different PCO air cleaner designs. According to the literature, the majority of testing has been in controlled laboratory setups with favorable conditions. As PCO air cleaner testing is scaled up to more realistic environments and conditions, the PCO removal efficiency tends to significantly decrease. The differences in removal efficiency can be …

Increased renewable energy penetration of an electrical grid generally creates more supply fluctuations. Traditional base-load systems, such as nuclear power, can be retrofitted with thermal energy storage (TES) systems to meet supply demand fluctuations. These systems can store energy during low electricity demand times to allow the reactor to operate at constant power while simultaneously fluctuating electricity output. The control of these systems is of vital importance and Model Predictive Control (MPC) is a leading control mechanism for optimized production plans with forecast information. This study combines high fidelity RELAP5-3D models with MPC to control an experimental benchtop system that …

The stick-fixed pitch maneuver point is an important measure of aircraft longitudinal dynamic response and handling quality characteristics, and includes effects of both aerodynamic and inertia properties of the aircraft about the pitch axis. In the present work, the existence of stick-fixed roll and yaw maneuver points is demonstrated, which are determined from the lateral forces, moments, and inertial properties of the aircraft. These stick-fixed roll and yaw maneuver points are directly related to the predicted lateral handling qualities. Example results are included for several aircraft that demonstrate the importance of this parameter when predicting the dynamic response of the …

This paper considers the problem of stabilizing a bio-inspired fighter aircraft variant at its Air Combat Maneuver Condition. The aircraft equations of motion are linearized, and an infinite-horizon linear quadratic regulator design is conducted for this aircraft. Included in the dynamics are first-order actuator models, which have the effect of slowing actuator responses. This is particularly important for the bio-inspired variant because it requires rotation of the empennage, which has relatively large inertia. The bio-inspired variant open-loop system is unstable in the short period and Dutch roll modes, which is mitigated in the closed-loop system. Monte Carlo simulation responses to …

This paper demonstrates the value of a framework for processing data on body acceleration as a uniquely valuable tool for diagnosing diseases that affect gait early. As a case study, we used this model to identify individuals with peripheral artery disease (PAD) and distinguish them from those without PAD. The framework uses acceleration data extracted from anatomical reflective markers placed in different body locations to train the diagnostic models and a wearable accelerometer carried at the waist for validation. Reflective marker data have been used for decades in studies evaluating and monitoring human gait. They are widely available for many …

While yes-associated protein (YAP) is now recognized as a potent mechanosensitive transcriptional regulator to affect cell growth and differentiation including the osteogenic transcription of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), most studies have reported the YAP mechanosensing of static mechanophysical cues such as substrate stiffness. We tested MSC response to dynamic loading, i.e., cyclic mechanical stretching, and assessed YAP mechanosensing and resultant MSC osteogenesis. We showed that cyclic stretching at 10% strain and 1 Hz frequency triggered YAP nuclear import in MSCs. YAP phosphorylation at S127 and S397, which is required for YAP cytoplasmic retention, was suppressed by cyclic stretch. We also …

Today, membranes play an increasing role in separation processes across a wide range of industries, including water treatment, biomedical applications, bioseparations, and gas separations (Yeom et al., 2022). Numerous different membrane types exist, which can be broadly categorized as either porous or non-porous, where pores may be or may not be filled with a separate phase from the bulk solvent and membrane phases. In addition, various driving forces exist - pressure, concentration, electric field, etc.—that lead to transport across the membrane. For a porous membrane, solute transport is usually governed by convective flow through the pores. Micron-sized pores are used …

Its primary objective is the replacement or regeneration of damaged tissues which is developed by combining living cells, a scaffold, and a bioreactor. Among these components, the scaffold serves as an artificial extracellular matrix (ECM), which plays a pivotal role in supporting cell adhesion, proliferation, differentiation, and overall tissue development. Additive manufacturing (AM), commonly referred to as three-dimensional (3D) printing, emerges as a promising method for scaffold fabrication due to its capability to create complex and repeatable geometries.

This paper presents a new beamforming technique based on the hybrid combination of the convolution algorithm (CA) and the genetic algorithm (GA) for reducing side lobe level (SLL) and array thinning of concentric circular antenna arrays (CCAA), which is denoted as C/GA technique. The CA determines the excitations of the elements, while the GA optimizes the radii of the circular arrays to adjust the half-power beamwidth (HPBW). For CCAA consisting of uniform feeding circular arrays, we assume that there are excitation coefficients that are distributed symmetrically around the array center and arranged in a vector. The excitation vector is convolved …
