"In this investigation the author used beams made of Bakelite. They were of rectangular cross-section and centrally loaded. These beams were viewed in polarized light and the maximum fiber stresses observed in that manner were compared with those computed from the flexure formula. The purpose was to determine the minimum length-depth ratio for which the latter gave fairly accurate results"--Preface, page 6.

"This work was undertaken because of the recently revived interest in the use of manganese as an alloying element. This revival of interest has been mainly due to the development of the process for electro-deposition of manganese by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. Prior to the work of the bureau of Mines there was no commercial source of high purity manganese. Manganese made by the electrolytic process contains less than .03% impurities, while manganese made by other methods contains as high as 3% impurities. "Gas absorption, one of the chief operations of chemical engineering, has occupied investigators for a long time. Results of many experiments on the general subject of gas absorption has been published. However, relatively few data have appeared in the literature on the use of bubble cap towers for gas absorption although they constitute one of the three major classifications of absorption equipment. Bubble cap towers are used extensively in the petroleum industry. More performance data would increase the versatility of existing equipment"--Introduction, page 1.

Nebraska Tractor Tests

All tractors tested at the Nebraska Tractor Test Laboratory were certified by their manufacturers as being stock model machines, conforming to specifications filed with the application for test. No special or high-test fuels were used except as recommended by the manufacturer as necessary.

All results within the official tractor test report were actually attained in tests and are without correction or allowances for friction, temperature, altitude, etc. The results were initially accomplished with the tractor in charge of skilled operators employed by the University.

INTRODUCTION Increasing interest in recent years in the performance of roof systems acting as shear diaphragms to resist horizontally applied loads, as well as the vertical loads for which they are primarily designed, has led to an increasingly large number of tests of fullsize and scaled structures loaded in this manner. OBJECT OF THIS REPORT The full program of tests outlined at the meeting of the Technical Subcommittee held in Ithaca on June 12 has been carried out with one exception: due to the limited time it has not been possible to determine the modulus of elasticity of the sheets. However since the modulus of elasticity of steel under any circumstances is about 29,000,000 to 30,000,000 p.s.i. this point of the program has no immediate practical significance. A stress survey has been made on the bottom flange of beam B-22-812b. A new series of 22 gage specimens has been designed for the further study of the bottom flange stresses and of the top flange buckling.

OBJECT OF THIS REPORT Since the investigations discussed in the previous report have proved that the stress distribution at midspan was fairly uniform in the narrowest, medium and widest beams of the 14 gage series, it seemed unnecessary to carry out investigations on the remaining two intermediate beams A-14-66 and A-l4-610. Three beams of the 22 gage series have been investigated so far, namely B-22-84a and b and B-22-88a.
