This document is Special Technical Bulletin No. 5, 13 March 1945, issued by the Office of the Director of Intelligence, Army Service Forces.

The Enemy Equipment Intelligence Service Teams (EEIS) were personnel from the Army Technical Services – the Ordnance Department, Chemical Warfare Service, Quartermaster Corps, Signal Corps, Army Medical Department, and Transportation Corps – which were trained by the Army Service Forces to collect enemy equipment for use in the field and for evaluation in the field and in the continental United States.

This stability investigation was started by the Bituminous Division of the Highway Materials Research Laboratory, Lexington, Kentucky during the month of October, 1944, and was completed the first of March 1945. The purpose of this investigation was to develop information on the design and control of asphalt pavements. The data presented may be used to compare mixes made from commercial aggregates with mixes containing local aggregates. It is believed that sufficient amount of reliable data is presented in this report to enable the design engineer to use the Marshall stability equipment and testing procedure to select the best available aggregate …

Ethylcellulose was refluxed with Stearic, Oleic, Linseed Fatty acids, and a neutral Mineral Oil in the presence of a solvent. The products recovered were analyzed to determine if any possible reaction had taken place. Conditions for the reaction were carried out so that the temperatures obtained could be in the near range of varnish cooking, that is between 375 and 500°C. The I solvents used were diethylbenzene, boiling point 180oC and tetralin, boiling point 208oC. In each case approximate stoichiometric proportions of the fatty acids and ethylcellulose were used. These were refluxed to a sensible minimum viscosity of solution. The …

"The need for a technique for making torsion balance surveys of inundated areas was brought to the writer's attention during the years of 1927 to 1933, while employed by The Sinclair Exploration Company to prospect for oil in Austria, Hungary and North and Northwest Germany. At that time, the company was using ten torsion balances, supplementing the work with magnetometer surveys and refraction seismograph detail. I. SCOPE OF THIS REPORT In the Thirty-eighth Progress Report a series of 118 tests was reported on web crippling under concentrated loads. These 118 tests which included 17 representative tests of the Twenty-fifth Progress Report were carried out for web crippling by loads on the span, by simple end reactions, by end reactions with additional loads on top flange, and by reactions of continuous supports with similar additional loads. A determination of the solubility of zinc ethyl xanthate was attempted by measuring the refractive index of a saturated solution of that salt. The small increment in refractive index effected by adding zinc ethyl xanthate to water in saturation quantities rendered measurements difficult and of dubious accuracy.

A study of the drying of Buna-S in crumb form (designated as GR-S) is presented in which investigations of vacuum and air drying are made. The drying characteristics are presented and the effect of drying on the quality is evaluated. Vacuum drying is investigated using a shelf and a rotary type unit. The individual effects of temperature, vacuum, thickness of crumb layer, and size of crumb particles are studied. Data are correlated by means of drying rate curves. Comparisons of the effects of the variables are made using these curves. Air drying is studied by the use of a shelf …

There have been developed various colored ethyl cellulose lacquers that compare favorably with standard nitrocellulose lacquers in physical tests. Ultra violet light caused rather pronounced darkening of the lighter colors such as white and light yellow, probably because of the use of high amounts of phenolic resin. Also because of the presence of relatively large amounts of phenolic resin, the cost was somewhat higher than a comparable nitrocellulose lacquer. Suggestions for further work and improvement are included. An ethyl cellulose lacquer has also been developed to be applied by spray or brush to ethyl cellulose plastics with a minimum amount …
