The reliability of a piece of equipment is a measure of its ability to function as intended. Equipment may malfunction in two different ways. It may fail catastrophically as a vacuum tube does when its heater opens; it may fail gradually as a vacuum tube does when its transconductance slowly falls to an unacceptable level over a period of time. It is not the intent of this paper to study catastrophic component failures, but rather to illustrate a technique whereby gradual failure of circuits can be minimized.

Titanium, although possessing excellent corrosion resistance in some media, is severely attacked by molten inorganic salts such as those employed in heat-treating baths. Since titanium undergoes allotropic changes, many of its alloys are amendable to heat treatment. The purpose of this study was to discover a salt (or other suitable medium) in which titanium alloys can be successfully heat treated without fear of corrosion.

Aluminium has been used as a reducing agent for various reactions, the best known of which is the thermit reaction, which is defined in the "Metals Handbook" as; "An exothermic, self-propagating process in which finely divided aluminum powder is used to reduce metal oxides to free metals by direct oxidation of aluminum to aluminum oxide, with accompanying reduction of the less stable metal oxide." The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the practicability of forecasting temperatures for the spring and summer snowmelt-runoff season. A successful temperature forecast for Logan, Utah, would be useful in studies of Logan River streamflow, as well as other related applications.

Logan, Utah, is situated in a region where the snow accumulates during the winter and early spring at high altitudes and remains until the proper sequence of meteorological events provides the thermodynamic conditions essential for melting. I believe that by installing apron ore feeders in place of chutes, spillages, manual labor, and loading time could reduced, and greater safety and the average car factor could be increased. Although an apron feeder would be a considerable investment, maintenance should be very low and the feeder would be re-usable many times.

This paper describes a device which electronically converts a binary number into its decimal equivalent. Such a device might be of use in digital computers, many of which use the binary number system, and also in similar machines, such as pulse code modulated data collectors.

The binary-to-decimal converter described here was designed specifically for use in Sandia Corporation's High-Speed Digital Recording and Data Handling System, which actually uses the Gray code rather than the binary number system. However, conversion from Gray to binary (see Appendix B) is simple, and a binary-to-decimal converter seems much simpler than a Gray-to-decimal converter.

Past observations have indicated that rusting has been rather prevalent in the large, un-paved metal drainage structures most of which have been installed since the opening of the Kentucky Rural Secondary Program in 1949. Since all of these structures are relatively new, and since rusting in any form can be considered a threat to the life of a structure, the Chief Engineer's Office, in 1954, requested that a study be made to determine the over-all frequency possible causes, and individual seriousness of this condition.

This paper represents an attempt to explain the operation of inclined-shaft mucking, and the machines developed for this purpose. It also covers some research done for the design of a continuous shaft mucking device, which could in the future prove to be the answer to this important problem. In many small or intermediate mining operations, where this problem has been a prime headache, the added costs of shaft mucking, because of lack of speed, and versatility, might very well mean the difference between profit and collapse.

"A stable direct current transistor amplifier is difficult to design for use at elevated temperatures. The above is true since transistor parameters and bias conditions are affected by temperature. When transistors are incorporated in direct coupled amplifier circuits, these variations in parameters and bias conditions usually result in unstable operation. It is the purpose of this thesis to investigate this problem and to design a stable direct current transistor amplifier which will operate satisfactorily at elevated temperatures.
