Comparison Of Observed And Calculated Near-Vertical Radar Ground Return Intensities And Fading Spectra, James Arlin Cooper Jun 1958

Comparison Of Observed And Calculated Near-Vertical Radar Ground Return Intensities And Fading Spectra, James Arlin Cooper

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The study of ground-to-air terrain return is necessary in order to understand the functioning of radar altimeters.

Radar return at vertical incidence can be considered to be composed of two components. One, whic his returned by a mirror-like action, is called the specular component. The other, termed scatter, is due to diffuse rerediation from individual scatterers on the ground.

In recent work on return from angles near vertical, more attention has been given to the scatter component than many had previously assumed necessary.

Procedure for Gathering Data:

Two pulse radar units were used, one having a frequency of 3.8 KMC, …

Analysis Of Cushioned Impact By Wave Propagation Techniques, Lowell P. Martin Jun 1958

Analysis Of Cushioned Impact By Wave Propagation Techniques, Lowell P. Martin

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

A typical problem of wave propagation which has received substantial attention concerns the longitudinal vibrations of a long, slender, uniform elastic rod after it has been dropped on one end.

The purpose of this investigation was to extend the problem to include the effect of cushioning material attached to the impacting end of a rod similar to that described above; and to conduct experiments designed to verify the analysis. This study is essentially the first step toward the analysis, by wave propagation methods, of many practical impact problems encountered in military airborne operations, experimental rocket programs, and the packaging industry.

Metallurgical Applications Of Polarized Light, Kenneth R. Evans Jun 1958

Metallurgical Applications Of Polarized Light, Kenneth R. Evans

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Very little has been written concerning the theory of the metallurgical polarization microscope. Records of metallurgical studies utilizing this instrument are widely scattered among the literature, and are mostly material of an uncoordinated and irrelevant nature. It is the feeling of the author that a coordinated investigation of the metallurgical applications of polarized light will yield results providing the metallurgist with another means for the study of metals and their properties.

A Study Of A Production Control System In A Job Order Die Casting Plant, Robert Gordon Woodnorth May 1958

A Study Of A Production Control System In A Job Order Die Casting Plant, Robert Gordon Woodnorth

Theses

This thesis examines the production planning and control system in a job-order die casting plant. After comparing to the criteria for an ideal system the following changes were recommended.

1. Central work storage and dispatching. This would reduce work in process and workload fluctuations through closer planning. It would also provide a perpetual inventory system and a central control point which would be constantly informed of production progress.

2. Operator trucking. By having operators do their own trucking material handling costs and production delays would be reduced.

3. Simplified job cost accounting. The use of standard costs for finishing and …

Evaluation Of Two Generalized Compressibility Correlations, Elbert Dale Hooper May 1958

Evaluation Of Two Generalized Compressibility Correlations, Elbert Dale Hooper

Theses

Lydersen's critica1 compressibility correlation and Pitzer's acentric factor correlation are compared by the accuracy with which they reproduce P-V-T data. Each introduces a new parameter to be employed in conjunction with reduced temperature and reduced pressure to account for the behavior of substances of various types.

It is established here that the correlation proposed by Pitzer and co-workers is the more reliable for compressibility and saturation pressure predictions for most substances over a wider temperature and pressure range. The critica1 compressibility, however, improves compressibility predictions near the critica1 point for polar compounds.

Included are graphs and tables showing the deviations …

This investigation was directed toward the extension of data on the kinetics of monovalent - trivalent cation exchange and to establish data on the relationship between temperature and total capacity of an ion exchange resin. In order to compare the present study to a previous investigation by Klosowski (2), the capacity of the resin used for ferric and chromic ions was also measured.

In the kinetic study, the ferric ion-hydrogen ion exchange using Dowex 50 X-8 resin was studied in an agitated vessel. A two-bladed marine type propellor was used and the agitator speed was varied from 400 to 800 …

Ferro And Ferricyanides In Industrial Waste Water, Frederick Joseph Neff May 1958

Ferro And Ferricyanides In Industrial Waste Water, Frederick Joseph Neff

Theses

The role of the Ferro and ferricyanides in present day waste treatment practice is reviewed. Possible conventional methods for the disposal of the compounds appear inadequate. It is shown experimentally that the cyanide content of Ferrocyanide may be oxidized by hypochlorite in alkaline solution when exposed to ultra-violet light and that no oxidation of the cyanide occurs when reacted with hypochlorite in diffuse laboratory light.

Production Of Standard-Grade Ferromanganese In An Electric Arc Furnace, John P. Hager May 1958

Production Of Standard-Grade Ferromanganese In An Electric Arc Furnace, John P. Hager

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The original purpose of this thesis was to determine the feasibility of producing standard-grade ferromanganese from the Cuban concentrates using an electric arc furnace. This purpose was later changed since it became necessary to study the adequacy of a laboratory electric arc furnace for comparability with commercial operations.

Since the original purpose of the investigation had been changed while the area of investigation had not, the research work was then continued with the purpose of collecting information on ferromanganese production as a background for anticipated future work in pyrochemical research at the Montana School of Mines.

Construction Of A Heavy Duty Military Airfield On Permafrost., Owen N. O'Leary

Civil Engineering ETDs

An examination of the map of the northern hemisphere will show that the two great population areas of opposing ideologies are located across the arctic regions from each other. This fact has been recognized by the U.S. military authorities since the early 1940’s, and an effort has been made to locate military forces in these regions to act as a possible deterrent to any aggressive action. The nature and geography of this region generally preclude any military forces except combat airfield. The most outstanding and possible only example of a major military airfield located entirely on permafrost material in these …

The Effects Of Acid Concentration On The Current Efficiency During The Electrolysis Of Zinc Sulfate Solution, Jon Langfeldt May 1958

The Effects Of Acid Concentration On The Current Efficiency During The Electrolysis Of Zinc Sulfate Solution, Jon Langfeldt

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The current efficiency during the electrolysis of zinc sulfate solution and the various factors that effect the current efficiency are major considerations of this industrial process. The factors affecting current efficiency-- temperature, current density, presence of impurities, time of electrolysis, hydrogen overvoltage, smoothness of the deposit, and acid concentration of the cell solution-- are controlled to the extent that current efficiencies of 90-93% are not uncommon in the industrial electrolytic zinc process. However, additional investigations of the effects of these various factors upon current efficiency are warranted, because of the endless search by the non-ferrous metal industries for additional information …

A Study Of The Chemical Factors Affecting The Rheological Properties Of A Quartz-Bentonite Suspension In Water, Harold Bruce Treweek May 1958

A Study Of The Chemical Factors Affecting The Rheological Properties Of A Quartz-Bentonite Suspension In Water, Harold Bruce Treweek

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Frequently, difficulties are encountered with mineral pulps in a mineral-processing plant, which are not alleviated or minimized by the application of such simple measures as varying fineness of grind of solid material, changing pulp density, or altering equipment operation (within practical limits). The basis of the difficulty in such a situation may be found in the very nature of the pulp-- its flow characteristics and behavior. Recognition of the problem followed by one-point viscometric measurement to determine fluidity can lead an operator to erroneous conclusions. Underlying this difficulty is the lack of technical literature concerning the application of ion exchange …

The Extraction Of Titanium From Titaniferous Magnetite, Roger N. Dokken May 1958

The Extraction Of Titanium From Titaniferous Magnetite, Roger N. Dokken

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The titanium in the titaniferous magnetite under study, as well as most other titaniferous iron ores, is so intimately associated with the iron that liberation cannot be achieved by mechanical means.

It is obvious from the preliminary investigations that some chemical means must be utilized from efficient extraction of the titanium. Two possible pyrometallurgical methods for this extraction are either soda sintering or direct smelting.
