This study outlines a method whereby a small, specialized "on-line" digital computer could be used to control urban vehicle traffic at a signalized intersection. In the basic system proposed, the computer uses as input data a "history" of the instantaneous vehicle flow, in terms of number of cars arriving and arrival time. The data are stored for a period of 240 seconds in a magnetic drum memory. Once each 1/2 second, the computer examines the arrival pattern of cars and compares the delay being imposed on the waiting cars versus the delay which would be imposed on the cars on …

This thesis describes the design of a device for determining the transfer function of a nuclear reactor. A number of different methods have been successfully employed for this purpose but were, in some cases, tedious or required the use of delicately balanced components. The equipment described computes values which are simply related to the values of the transfer function and is operable over a frequency range of about 1000:1. The time required to obtain data for one frequency point is two minutes or less. No precise adjustment is necessary during operation.

It is the author's hope that by systematically investigating the inclusions in ingot iron and comparing their specific properties with the properties of substances known to exist as inclusions, a rapid and accurate method may be found to identify them using a polarizing microscope. Once the major factors effecting agglomerating materials are understood, formerly poor and nonagglomerating materials may be affected so that they will produce good quality agglomerates. Should the factors prove difficult to vary or impossible at least they may be identified and understood, thus serving as a guide for further attack or judgment in overall process design.

Of the cohesive soils the property of plasticity is usually of the most concern to the engineer. The clay minerals rather than the clay size material present in a soil determine the degree and magnitude of plastic properties. In turn, the plasticity of the clay minerals varies according to their mineralogy and particle size. Of the various types of clay minerals present in a soil, only kaolinite, illite and montmorillonite occur in sufficient abundance to be of general engineering significance.

Since the development of dense-graded aggregate base in Kentucky about 1952, there have been various conjectures about "auto-cementations" or "setting" of these materials when compacted and cured. In some cases, particularly when the material was limestone, they have developed rather surprising strengths, in the field as well as in the laboratory. Such displays of strength seem to be directly associated with curing (slow drying) and the possibility of re-deposition of small amounts of dissolved calcium carbonate as cement. Chromous chloride has been shown to be more efficient than titanous chloride in the reduction of refractory nitro and nitramine groups in both aromatic and aliphatic compounds.

It was found that concentrated hydrochloric acid increases the efficiency of chromous chloride to a point where it would reduce the most difficult to deduce nitro-campounds.

The compounds studied were p-Nitromethylaniline, 2,4-Dinitrotoluene, 2,4-Dinitroaniline, 2,4,6-Trinitrotoluene, Nitroguanidine, I,9-Di4cetoxy-2,4,6,8-penta-methylenetetranitramine, Sym-Cyclotrimethylenetrinitrimine, and Sym-Cyclotetramethylenetetranitramine.

The rate of heat transfer due to natural convection in confined, horizontal, fluid layers can be expressed by equations involving the dimensionless parameters Nusselt No., Rayleigh No., and Prandtl No., where Rayleigh No. equals the product of Grashof and Prandtl Nos.

Statistical correlation by stepwise multiple regression of experimental data obtained from four different investigators, on both gases and liquids, yields three separate equations corresponding to three distinct regimes of convection. This thesis has to do with the selective flotation of the manganese oxide minerals in an ore from Charco Redondo Mine, Oriente Province, Cuba. Since a sound knowledge of the nature of the emulsion-induced flotation process of these minerals does not exist, experimental research constitutes the most valuable resource for determining the extent to which different reagents influence the process. Moreover, a correlation of experimental results with the chemical and physical properties of the minerals and reagents can lead to the improvement of existing theories regarding the mechanism of a process.

Primarily, the purpose of this study is to separate stibiconite from associated gangue minerals. The ore containing antimony, as an oxide stibiconite, occurs in Mexico and its benefication would be an advantage to the mineral resources of that country. While the deposit from which this ore is derived is American owned, the resource is presently non-economic. A concentrate must be derived of suitable grade for its use in a smelting operation and from which metallic antimony would be produced.

Until very recently, the knowledge of the shear strength of reinforced concrete members and pre-stressed concrete members was wholly statistical. Attempts to grow a single crystal from the cast alloy were not successful because of the difficulties that were encountered with the Kanthal resistance furnace (referred to later). Consequently, the growing of the single crystal was abandoned and the alloy was tested in the poly-crystalline form.
