The Intelligence and Mapping Division of the US Army Corps of Engineers was primarily responsible for creation of military intelligence concerning the surface of the earth excluding the oceans and seas for the armed forces of the United States. Engineer intelligence guides were issued to provide guidance concerning collection, processing, production, and dissemination of geographic intelligence to elements of the Corps of Engineers.

Synopsis: Uruguay irrigates about 65,000 acres, mostly rice (74%) and sugar cane (15%). Summer rainfall averages about 3.5 in. per month, but frequent droughts seriously affect both crops and livestock. Irrigation can be increased by storage in small reservoirs on tributary streams by means of low earth dams. Some areas will require flood control and draiange before intensive agriculture can be practiced.

The Kentucky Department of Highways, in 1946, sought a more systematic criteria and basis for designing the thickness of bituminous concrete pavements. The Research Division was authorized to pursue this work and to develop the criterion. These efforts were embodied in a report (1) to the Department, which offered a system of design based upon CBR's and EWL's. EWL's were computed originally for a 10-yr. period but this practice was revised in 1954, to encompass 20-yr. traffic (more realistic with respect to average road life). On April 7, 1959, the Curtiss-Wright Corporation announced the development of a new coal-based road paving binder, utilizing bituminous coal. This development was the result of their research program conducted in an effort to find new uses for coal and coal products. The basic principle used in preparing this bituminous binder was the digestion of powdered coal in coal tar and tar oils at temperatures of 500-600°F. By adjusting the proportions of tar, tar oils, and coal, binders could be prepared having penetration ranges comparable to asphalt cements. The absolute viscosity of the normal paraffins C₅H₁₂ to C₂₀H₄₂ was studied to determine a relationship more useful in predicting liquid viscosities than existing correlations such as the methods of Andrade, Souders, Thomas, and Doolittle.

It was found that a function of corresponding liquid states could be designed which related viscosity to the number of carbon atoms. This function, here called liquidity, is defined as the extent to which a substance exists as a liquid with respect to temperature. This function can be expressed mathematically as:

Wire mesh entrainment separators were installed in a vertical cylindrical column at varying angles from the horizontal. With a fixed liquid loading, air flow rates were varied in order to determine the maximum capacity of the mist eliminator for any given angle of installation. Mist eliminators studied were 4" thick and constructed of 0. 011" diameter Type 304 stainless steel wire with a density of 12 lbs. per cubic foot and 5 lbs. per cubic foot.

An investigation was made to determine the relationship between new surface formed and energy input in the slow compression crushing of single glass particles at levels of high energy input.

Particle geometry, as represented by various sized hollow and solid cylinders, showed no effect on the energy-area relationship obtained.

Using an average particle size relationship as a measure of surface area, a definite relationship was found to exist between the new surface formed and the energy input for the slow compression crushing of glass.

A microwave interferometer technique which may be used as a diagnostic tool for determining the electronic properties of a moving plasma is described and analyzed. The plasma and microwaves are confined in a wave guide and longitudinal observation is employed. The complex reflection coefficient determined from resultant standing-wave pattern provides the means for obtaining the complex dielectric constant, conductivity, electron concentration and collision frequency of electrons with molecules in the plasma. The plasma used for these experiments is the reaction products of a gas detonation.
