Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

A stylized, rational criterion for the structural design and installation of reinforced concrete pipe culverts was developed by the Bureau of Public Roads in cooperation with Prof. M. G. Spangler of Iowa State College and the American Concrete Pipe Association and was distributed to the various state highway agencies, April 4, 1957, as Circular Memorandum 22-40.* The criterion was intended to bring together and simplify methods for computing the strengths required for various fill heights and conditions of bedding. Introduction

The purpose of this research project was to calibrate the slide gates used by the D.M.A.D. Company (Delta, Melville, Abraham and Deseret Irrigation Companies). These gates, which number more than 600, are located throughout the distribution system. Each gate is placed in a concrete box 4 feet wide, 3-1/2 feet deep and 4 feet long. The structure is used as a means of diverting the water and is also used as a measuring device.

A similar structure, but with a different type of slide gate, was calibrated in 1914. At the time rating tables were prepared which listed the …

"The radiation equations for a simple rectangular slot antenna are derived as a function of the field distribution in the slot. The electric field distribution in the slot is then formulated as a function of the aperture dimensions. The U-shaped slot antenna is described as an extension of the rectangular slot theory and the actual field is measured in the slot for comparison.

"This problem is concerned with the temperature history of a semi-infinite solid bounded by one flat surface.

Heat was applied by convection from a hot fluid to the flat surface of the solid which was originally at a uniform temperature. Heat was radiated from the flat surface to black space and conducted into the solid according to Fourier's law. The temperature at the surface, and at several points beneath the surface, was determined as a function of time.

"A synthesis procedure is presented which realizes second order open circuit transfer functions. This procedure is developed using parallel networks. The transfer functions for each parallel network are obtained by use of separation parameters. Two constraints are used in the development: first, the realized network must be an RC network; second, the desired multiplicative gain constant must be realized. With these constaints a parameter space is developed which aids in the selection of the proper parallel networks to be combined. "The objective of this investigation was to determine the effects of deviations from the recommended gradation of aggregate upon asphalt concrete mixes. The aggregate used in this study was a good grade Missouri Limestone and was mixed with an asphalt cement of 85-100 penetration grade. A control mix was designed in accordance with the Marshall Method using a gradation recommended by the Asphalt Institute. "The applicability of the Strunk, Custead, and Stevenson method for predicting the viscosities of multicomponent, non-polar, gaseous mixtures vas investigated. The viscosities of 24 ternary and quaternary gaseous mixtures were experimentally determined, at 3 temperature levels, and compared with the corresponding calculated viscosities resulting from the prediction method. In addition, the published viscosities of 64 multicomponent mixtures were compared with the corresponding calculated viscosities.

"A strain of Thiobaci.llus thiooxidans was isolated from a West Virginia coal mine drainage. This strain was characterized by its production of sulfuric acid in shake flasks. The strain was also compared with a pure culture of h thiooxidans obtained from the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC number 8085).

The strain was grown in submerged culture in a 16-liter pilot scale fermenter. Two aeration systems, air and air enriched with carbon dioxide, were examined. The air enriched with carbon dioxide gave a much more rapid growth rate. The culture reached the mid-log phase of growth after 80 hours of incubation …

"An assumption was made that extensive holding time of an inoculated gray iron melt would result in a loss of physical properties of castings poured from this melt. This theory was examined in both a literature search and by testing and conclusions drawn from these findings are presented and discussed. Although there is a great deal of data available which discusses inoculants and their effects, very little mention is made of the effect of holding time in any of this material.
