"Prior work in the area of drag reduction has been mainly limited to aqueous solutions. Theoretical and empirical analyses of the resulting data in aqueous solutions have been hindered by the fact that some polymers cause drag reduction and others do not...This investigation was directed to the study of how the size and configuration of the polymer molecule in solution affected drag reduction and the related phenomenon of turbulence suppression. "The mixed alkali effect in silicate glasses was examined from internal friction measurements made over the temperature range from -190 to 500⁰C and at a frequency of 0.4 Hz. Supplemental measurements of the activation energy for the different internal friction peaks, dynamic shear modulus, density, and index of refraction were also made. All measurements were confined to silicate glasses containing mixtures of Li-Na, Li-K, Li-Rb, Li-Cs, Na-K, Na-Rb, Na-Cs, and K-Rb. Rötger's interpretation of the internal friction of mixed-alkali silicate glasses is shown to be incorrect. A previously unreported internal friction peak was observed whenever two different alkali oxides were …

"A mile hydrolyzing procedure was utilized to degrade oak sawdust. Its capability of producing a suitable fermentatation [sic] medium was studied. In the interest of solubilizing, enzymatically, the carbohydrate portion of oak sawdust, an investigation was conducted in which various microorganisms were examined for their ability to utilize different forms of cellulose for their growth and to produce cellulose decomposing enzymes. The microorganisms included a myxobacterium, several fungi, and a wood-rotting basidiomycete. The fungi included two highly cellulolytic organisms, Myrothecium verrucaria and Trichoderma viride. The myxobacterium used was Sorangium cellulosum and the basidiomycete was Pleurotus ostreatus. The principla substrates employed …

The writer sought an improved approach for teaching theory of electronics to high school students. This approach was intended to require less expense and time needed to provide classroom instruction on electrical theory.

The purpose of this study were to:

(1) Prepare a number of demonstrations to illustrate phenomena associated with coils or inductors and their use in practical electronics.

(2) Prepare equipment and gather parts needed to perform demonstrations. Ease of construction and economy were important considerations.

(3) Evaluate the effectiveness of the demonstrations on student comprehension and the ability to apply information taught.

If a resistor in a circuit is exposed to a transient gamma radiation pulse, the condition of the circuit will be modified by passing from its steady state condition before radiation to a state of excitation that will depend upon the intensity and duration of the radiation pulse. When the radiation pulse is over, the circuit will then relax to its previous condition of equilibrium within a characteristic time constant.

When a pipe culvert is constructed on or near the natural ground surface and covered by a highway fill or embankment, the weight of the embankment compresses and consolidates the foundation soil, settlement occurs, and the culvert subsides and sags below the original grade line. Experience has shown that culverts which become clogged with silt and debris, become disjointed and faulted, leak, become undermined, and endanger the stability of the embankment. According to Joe Creason's report appearing in the Courier-Journal June 23, 1957 (copy attached), the Kentucky Rock Asphalt Company elected, June 14, 1957, to liquidate. Among the assets was a stockpile of material which was valued at $197,000 (I recall that the stated price, F.O.B. Sweden, in 1955 was $7.00 per ton); this calculates to be 28,140 tons-- which is a small quantity in comparison to the gross production (200,000 to 275,000 tons; $1.2 to $1.75 million) during some prior years.
