The Effect Of An Electrical Corona Discharge Upon The Reaction Of So2 To So3 In Low Concentration So2 - Air Mixtures, Edward James Malarkey May 1965

The Effect Of An Electrical Corona Discharge Upon The Reaction Of So2 To So3 In Low Concentration So2 - Air Mixtures, Edward James Malarkey

Theses

An investigation of a pilot plant electrical dust precipitator was conducted to determine its ozone generating characteristics in air as well as the ability of the ozone formed to convert gaseous SO2 to particulate SO3. It was anticipated that in addition to the known primary particulate dust and mist removal function of a precipitator, a secondary gaseous removal facility was inherent in its operation.

Ozone formation quantities were determined at varied air flow and electrical power input levels to the precipitator. Maximum ozone generation was 0.02 pounds per hour at an energy input level of 113 KW-HR …

Cavity Effect In A Pressure Bar, Kenneth B. Simmons May 1965

Cavity Effect In A Pressure Bar, Kenneth B. Simmons

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

The investigation deals with certain aspects of wave propagation in a rod containing a penny-shaped cavity, particularly fracture related to the presence of the cavity. When a rod containing a cavity is subjected to a compressive stress pulse, part of the pulse is transmitted past the cavity and part is reflected. When the end of the rod is free, the cavity is subjected to a reflected tensile pulse which, if strong enough, can cause fracture. The existence of the cavity tends to weaken the rod since there is a reduction in the cross-sectional area and a stress concentration effect. Epoxy …

The Effects Of Repeated Loading On The Modulus Of Elasticity Of Concrete, Fidel T. Smith May 1965

The Effects Of Repeated Loading On The Modulus Of Elasticity Of Concrete, Fidel T. Smith

Civil Engineering ETDs

Under present design methods, the modulus of elasticity is designated only with respect to the ultimate strength and the unit weight of concrete and is assumed constant throughout the life of the structure. The only provision made for change in the modulus of elasticity due to age, moisture content, type of loading or fatigue is to assume the weakest condition of the concrete. On elastic analysis the stress-strain relationship is assumed to be linear and the concrete is assumed to carry no tensile stress. In ultimate design procedures the concept of straight line distribution of stress is dropped and a …

Tests Of A Suggested Piezometric Method For Determining Hydraulic Conductivity Of Saturated Soils, K. R. Channarasappa May 1965

Tests Of A Suggested Piezometric Method For Determining Hydraulic Conductivity Of Saturated Soils, K. R. Channarasappa

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

A major factor in the design of drainage systems is the hydraulic conductivity of the soil strata to be drained. Various methods for measuring the hydraulic conductivity of soils in both the field and the laboratory have been devised. In many cases, however, laboratory methods fail to give reliable data since the natural field conditions under which flow actually takes place cannot be duplicated in the laboratory. Hence a need exists for a field method for measuring hydraulic conductivity of soils in situ. When a large number of tests are to be performed in a given location, a simple, quick, …

Flume Study Of The Effect Of Concentration And Size Of Roughness Elements On Flow In High-Gradient Natural Channels, Mohamed Wafaie Abdelsalam May 1965

Flume Study Of The Effect Of Concentration And Size Of Roughness Elements On Flow In High-Gradient Natural Channels, Mohamed Wafaie Abdelsalam

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In recent years investigators have given increased attention to flow in natural, high-gradient, rough, open channels. Studies include work in both the laboratory and in the field. Solutions to the problem are still incomplete; however, continued attention by investigators is needed to answer many questions. Using a laboratory flume, the writer studied one of the questions concerning the relative importance of gross velocity fluctuations versus turbulent mixing, and the ranges of each under different ranges of submergence and kineticity of flow. In the different ranges, the effect of size and concentration of the roughness elements was studied.

A Study Of The Structure Of Shear Turbulence In Free Surface Flows, Maddineni Venkateswara Rao May 1965

A Study Of The Structure Of Shear Turbulence In Free Surface Flows, Maddineni Venkateswara Rao

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Turbulence is a familiar phenomenon which gives rise to complicated problems in many branches of engineering. Hinze has set forth the following definition for turbulence: "Turbulent fluid motion is an irregular condition of flow in which the various quantities show a random variation in time and space coordinates, so that statistically distinct average values can be discerned." Osborne Reynolds (1894) was the first to introduce the notion of statistical mean values into the study of turbulence. He visualized turbulent flow as the sum of mean and eddying motion. By introducing this sum of mean velocity and fluctuating velocity into the …

The Influence Of Exchangeable Ions And Their Concentration In The Pore Fluid On Plastic And Strength Properties Of Cohesive Soil, Mahmoud H. Abd-El-Aziz

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A study was conducted to find out both the effect of different exchangeable cations and the concentration of ions in the soil pore fluid on strength and plastic properties of a sample of cohesive soil taken from the bank of an open drain ditch at the Utah State University Irrigation and Drainage Farm.

The experimental results of this study may be summarized by the following points:

  1. A general decrease of liquid limit and an increase in both shear strength and modulus of elasticity, with increasing salt concentration in the pore fluid, were observed for all samples, with the exception of …

Determining And Telemetering Snowpack Water Content In Mountainous Terrain, Stephen Davis Clarke May 1965

Determining And Telemetering Snowpack Water Content In Mountainous Terrain, Stephen Davis Clarke

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Snowpack water content is an important parameter in streamflow forecasts. At the present time water content of the snowpack is determined by manual methods, which are often expensive and time-consuming. The use of a pressure pillow to determine water content has shown promise in experimental applications.

The design and analysis of a pressure transducer suitable for use with remote telemetry equipment is presented. The transducer uses changing fluid pressure to vary an inductor.

Telemetry techniques suitable for use on Utah snow courses are analyzed. Emphasis is given to the passive and active remote radio relays.

Estimation Of Pan Evaporation And Potential Evapotranspiration Of Rice In The Central Plain Of Thailand By Using Various Formulas Based On Climatological Data, Paitoon Palayasoot

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Water has become one of major national concerns, and it is the limiting factor in the expansion of an irrigated agriculture. Irrigation development is rapidly growing all over the world. New lands are being brought under irrigation and older irrigation lands are being improved. In the planning and operation of an irrigation project, the estimation of water requirements and evapotranspiration, or consumptive use, requires careful consideration. A knowledge of evapotranspiration is playing an increasingly important part in irrigation science. It is the best index of water requirements which represent the amount of water that should be applied by irrigation for …

Water Budget Of Bear River Delta, Chia Chu Hsieh May 1965

Water Budget Of Bear River Delta, Chia Chu Hsieh

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study was made to prepare a mean annual water budget of the Bear River Delta, Utah and to determine the average annual outflow from the area into the Great Salt Lake. Solution of the hydrologic continuity equation was the analytical method used in determining the budget. Outflow to the lake was obtained as the residual between all items of inflow and other items of outflow. Three budgets were made using different techniques of estimating some of the items in the equation in order to serve as comparison checks on the final value of outflow to the lake. The time …

Transient Response Of Linear Damped Lumped Spring-Mass Systems By Experimentally Derived Transfer Functions, Ralph W. Kelley Apr 1965

Transient Response Of Linear Damped Lumped Spring-Mass Systems By Experimentally Derived Transfer Functions, Ralph W. Kelley

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

In the field of mechanical shock testing, there are many instances where the responsive motions of linear undamped and lightly damped lumped spring-mass systems must be determined. If a model representing the system to be tested is available, it is possible to determine the responsive motion by several different approaches. Most of these methods require solving the differential equation of motion in some manner. Among the more common methods of solving the differential equation are the classical solution, the use of Laplace transforms, and various graphical techniques. All of these methods, however, require that a model of the system under …

The Electrical Conductivity Of Some Cryogenic Fluids, Walter L. Willis Mar 1965

The Electrical Conductivity Of Some Cryogenic Fluids, Walter L. Willis

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Cryogens (liquefied gases with low boiling points) are, in general, excellent insulators. Prior to this investigation, no measurements of conductivity in cryogens had been successful. An upper limit of conductivity in the range 10-15 to 10-17 mho/cm had been established for some cryogens. Data from the organic chemicals and petrol m industries indicated that fluids with conductivities in the 10-11 to 10-15 mho/cm range could present electrostatic potential hazards, particularly in situations of large volume storage and high flow rates. The advent of large capacity dewars and associated high flow rates of cryogens in the aerospace …

Freeze-Thaw Characteristics Of Aggregates, George R. Laughlin Mar 1965

Freeze-Thaw Characteristics Of Aggregates, George R. Laughlin

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Premature deterioration of concrete under freezing and thawing conditions is often attributable to the aggregate fraction. Past research has shown that the freeze-thaw characteristics of aggregate are related, in a general way, to such properties as: 1) porosity, 2) absorption, and 3) bulk specific gravity. Actually it is the pore system--that is, the size, shape, arrangement and continuity of the pores--that governs the freeze-thaw characteristics. Distress in aggregate particles arises from hydrostatic pressure induced when a portion of its absorbed pore-water is frozen. The degree of distress or damage manifested is dependent upon the amount of permeable porosity, the degree …

Fugacity Coefficients Of Gases In Binary Mixtures, David Albin Olson Feb 1965

Fugacity Coefficients Of Gases In Binary Mixtures, David Albin Olson

Theses

A proposed, method of Joffe for determining fugacity coefficients of gases In binary mixtures is presented. The method is evaluated by calculating 320 pairs of fugacity coefficients and comparing the results with experimental data and with values calculated by the method of Pitzer.

Joffe derived the expression for fugacity coefficients by employing the technique of Gamson and Watson. The expression is based on the three-parameter corresponding states principle as previously presented by Pitzer and a proposed definition of the pseudocritical properties.

The method of Pitzer and the proposed method of Joffe both require the same data.

This study is based …

Construction And Interim Performance Of Silica Sand-Asphalt Surfacing, Robert L. Florence Feb 1965

Construction And Interim Performance Of Silica Sand-Asphalt Surfacing, Robert L. Florence

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The report submitted herewith emanates from continuing efforts to develop sand-asphalt surfacing to a high degree of perfection and as a possible alternative to Class I, Type A, bituminous concrete surfaces. This type of surface excels in skid-resistance and may evolve as a preferred method of surface renewal and de-slicking for worn pavements which are otherwise structurally substantial. This report is concerned principally with observations afforded by the aforenamed, State construction project; it is, in that sense, an interim report.

A Mechanical Thevenin Equivalent Circuit Of A Separately Excited D.C. Motor, Hershel R. Lung Jan 1965

A Mechanical Thevenin Equivalent Circuit Of A Separately Excited D.C. Motor, Hershel R. Lung

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

This problem is concerned with the transient analysis of a DC machine with constant field excitation. By using the generalized circuit concept and Thevenin's Theorem applied to this concept, the transient behavior of this type of machine can be found from an analysis of a lumped circuit model of the machine. The lumped circuit model is a three port device and as such, the terminal equations describing the relationship between the difference and flow signals at the various ports are nonlinear. The nonlinear terms due to the products of signals in the terminal equations can be eliminated by requiring that …

Small Prolate Spheroidal Antenna In A Dissipative Medium., William Troy Cowan Jan 1965

Small Prolate Spheroidal Antenna In A Dissipative Medium., William Troy Cowan

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

A perfectly conducting prolate spheroidal antenna immersed in a conducting medium is analyzed. It is assumed that the dimensions of the spheroid are small compared to a skin depth in the medium. A gain factor for the antenna as a receiver is computed as a function of the spheroid's axis ratio. The prolate spheroid is assumed to be excited by a circular filament of magnetic current located in the plane of the spheroid's minor axes to approximate excitation by a magnetic toroid. Expressions for the antenna's input admittance and effective length are derived. Some experimental results verifying the derivation of …

Transient Temperature Distribution In A Finite Cylinder And An Infinite Cylinder Subjected To Some Boundary Conditions, Harng-Sen Huang Jan 1965

Transient Temperature Distribution In A Finite Cylinder And An Infinite Cylinder Subjected To Some Boundary Conditions, Harng-Sen Huang

Masters Theses

"This thesis is concerned with the theoretical heat transfer analysis of solid cylinders. The first problem considered is the transient temperature distribution in a finite cylinder. This cylinder has a uniform initial temperature and a uniform constant surrounding temperature. This case is solved by the separation of variables. Combining the charts for the infinite cylinder and the charts for the infinite plate one can determine the solution to this case easily. If a uniform constant surface temperature is prescribed instead of a surrounding temperature, the solution can be obtained from the previous one by charging the Nusselt number to infinity. …

Thin Film Resistor Deposition, Rollie R. Herzog Jan 1965

Thin Film Resistor Deposition, Rollie R. Herzog

Masters Theses

"Thin film techniques may be the key to future miniaturization of electrical equipment. The purpose of this thesis was to develop procedures for deposition of thin film resistors and to test these deposited resistors. Starting with a vacuum system, equipment was designed and built to hold and heat the substrate, monitor the substrate temperature and deposited resistance, and to evaporate the material to be deposited. Resistors were deposited and tested for resistance between resistors, capacitance between resistors, and resistance of resistors. A heat aging test was also used comparing resistors with and without a silicon monoxide coating"--Abstract, page ii.

Sharpening And Care Of Mulesing Shears, A L. Jones Jan 1965

Sharpening And Care Of Mulesing Shears, A L. Jones

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THIS year will probably see more sheep mulesed in Western Australia than ever before.

It is not surprising, therefore, that some improvements have been made to the standard mulesing shears.

New modified shears make mulesing easier —but they must be properly sharpened.
