In 1878, Hall found that the stream lines of an electric current in a metallic conductor were distorted when the conductor was placed in an external magnetic field. This distortion arises from an electric field set up at right angles to the current and to the magnetic field. The effect is well known in conductors and semiconductors, for both steady state and low frequencies Figure 1-1 illustrates the polarities of the Hall voltage for Ix in the direction of conventional current flow.

The object of this investigation was to determine the effect of acceleration on the drag of spheres as it differs from the steady state case. Steady state drag applies to the force acting on a single sphere moving at constant velocity through an infinite, continuous, incompressible, turbulence free fluid. Extensive experimentation has quite thoroughly documented the steady state drag characteristics of spheres. A dimensionless parameter associated with the drag force is sometimes used to correlate drag characteristics.

Light gage steel roof, wall, and floor systems may be used to transfer in-plane shear forces from one part of a framed structure to another, leading to reduced loads in parts of the structure. This is particularly noticeable in buildings having rigid end walls and under lateral loading. The diaphragms transfer forces from the interior frames into the foundation through the rigid end walls, resulting in lower loads for the interior frames. The amount of force transfer is dependent upon the in-plane shear strength and is particularly sensitive to the shear stiffness of the diaphragm. The results from some 60 …

Experimental batch heat-transfer data were obtained for both Newtonian and pseudoplastic liquids in a baffled agitated vessel. The fluids tested had flow behavior in-dexes between 0.36 and 1.0; and the apparent viscosity ranged from 1 to 1200 centipoise. Four types of impellers (anchor, paddle, propeller, and disk and vane turbine) were studied using eleven separate impellers. The probable error in the measured heat transfer coefficient was ± 20 percent.

The effects of the generalized Reynolds number, generalized Prandtl number, and viscosity ratio were studied. In addition the effect of impeller diameter was studied for paddles, propellers, and turbines; and the …

The design of optimum polynomial digital data smoothers (filters) is considered for linear and adaptive processing systems. It is shown that a significant improvement in performance can be obtained by using linear smoothers that take into account known a priori constraints or distributions of the input signal. The procedure for designing optimum (minimum mean square error) adaptive polynomial data smoothers is then discussed and analyzed. The optimum smoother makes use of a priori signal statistics combined with an adaptive Bayesian weighting of a bank of conditionally optimum smoothers.
