The Anodic Oxidation Of Crotonic Acid In Basic Solutions, Richard C. Porter

"The purpose of this study was to investigate the anodic oxidation of crotonic acid in basic solutions. Potassium hydroxide solutions of pH 12.3 and KOH-K₂CO₃ solutions of pH 11.5 and 10.5 were used. The investigation was carried out on platinized-platinum anodes at 80°C.

Experimental studies were conducted to determine the effects of crotonic acid concentration, pH, and temperature on the current. Faradaic efficiency was determined by analysis of CO₂ produced and was approximately 100 per cent.

The results were interpreted in terms of a mechanism having the following characteristics:

The measures employed by the U.S. Soil Conservation and Forestry Services to control and reduce erosion, the primary source of sediment, was studied. The flood control and river navigation structures constructed and operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the effect of these structures on sedimentation was also evaluated. State and local community regulation and control of exploited natural resources was studied to determine their influence on the generation and control of sediment.

"A program for Matlock's recursive method, a numerical method which will analyze beams and columns with linearly varying spring supports, was modified to enable the solution of such members supported by non-linear springs. This modification was accomplished by an iterative technique. The final result of this paper is a computer program which can be used to solve beams or columns with non-linear spring supports, giving as output the deflection, slope, moment, shear, net load and curvature of the structure at uniformly spaced locations"--Abstract, page ii.

"This thesis presents both an experimental and analytical analysis of the scram characteristics of a fluid control system for a nuclear reactor. This control system utilizes a control tube containing a neutron-absorbing fluid. The level of the fluid inside of the tube is then regulated by means of' a pressurized gas and offers a number of unique advantages over the conventional control rod system using linear absorber rods.

The measurement of neutron flux spectra in reactors is a problem which can be approached in several ways, depending on the information desired. For high energy measurements, threshold detectors are often used; if spatial information of the flux is required, some type of fission detector may be employed. For flux magnitude measurements in the epithermal energy range, foils of elements which have strong neutron absorption resonances are commonly utilized. "This investigation involves a study of the supercooling behavior of pure bismuth as affected by the melting atmosphere, the amount of superheat, and the intentional addition of metallic and non-metallic foreign materials to the melt. It was found that the amount of oxide on the melt surface is a controlling factor in the degree of supercooling obtainable in bismuth. In the presence of a thick bismuth oxide surface layer the amount of superheat below a 15°C drastically decreases the amount of supercooling due to the retention of nuclei in the surface film that promote nucleation upon cooling of the melt. …

"The purpose of this investigation was to study the effect of cadmium ions on the anodic dissolution of cadmium in salt solutions of ·constant ionic strength. The concentration of the cadmium ions was varied from 0.001 to 1 N and the current density ranged from 0.001 to 0.1 amp•cm^-2. The temperature was controlled at 25°C.
