Several integral formulations for obtaining approximations to the solution are discussed and studied. The inverse pinch configuration has been recognized as a possible means of producing stable, repeatable shock waves in a plasma for laboratory investigation. The simple geometry permits investigation of cases with or without an initial transverse magnetic field in an un-ionized or pre-ionized medium. Previous analytic work for this geometry has been restricted to a snowplow model, sometimes including coupling with the external circuitry. The solution presented here consists of a finite difference, Lagrangian coordinate system solution for a one-fluid hydromagnetic model. Drag reduction in the pipe flow of polymer solutions is shown to be of two types which apparently occur by two separate mechanisms. In turbulent flow, drag reduction is probably caused by viscoelastic effects. The critical solvent Reynolds number at the onset of drag reduction is proportional to about the first power of the diameter. Thus, the critical velocity is independent of tube diameter. Polymers dissolved in good solvents show more drag reduction than in poor solvents. The other type of drag reduction occurs when the laminar region is extended to high Reynolds numbers. Procedures are given for smoothing and differentiating experimental data with both equal and nonequal spacing in the independent variable. Selection of the number of points to be included in the "movable strip" technique and of the degree of the polynomial is discussed. Equations are given to estimate the error by calculating a confidence interval on each slope. The suitability and choice of different plant materials for roadside planting will be governed primarily by cost of establishment and maintenance, by the effectiveness in stabilizing the soil, and by safety and beauty achieved. It must be recognized that conditions often encountered in roadside planting situations are different from normal conditions found in fields and yards. The term water clarifier as used in this text refers to a versatile water treatment unit which combines flocculation and coagulation, clarification and positive sludge removal in a single tank. Water clarifiers are very compact units which are being used in municipal and industrial water treatment for the removal of turbidity, algae, color, iron and silica; lime or lime-soda softening; magnesium precipitation; brine clarification; and waste water clarification with or without chemicals. Water clarifier units have found wide use in the sanitary field, providing high removals in the pre-treatment of sewage and in secondary sewage treatment through addition of coagulants.

Light-gage steel roof, wall, and floor systems may be used to transfer in-plane shear forces from one part of a framed structure to another, leading to reduced loads in parts of the structure. Such behavior is particularly noticeable in buildings that have rigid shear walls and are subjected to lateral loads such as those arising from wind or earthquakes. The transfer of shear force through such diaphragms is dependent on the shear strength and is particularly sensitive to shear stiffness. This study explores the fresh water and hydroelectricity resources of the City of Tacoma, Washington. The history and development of the water supply and hydroelectric facilities is examined. One can see that the development of the water resources has been directly affected by the growth in population and industry and that the nearness to the city of development sites has been an aid in this development. With the amount of water available at present and the increase in hydro-electric facilities during this decade, the future outlook for Tacoma in the field of water resources seems bright.

The vapor pressures of eleven primary straight chain alkyl chlorides and eleven primary straight chain alcohols between C3 and C16 were determined within a range of 5 to 760 mm Hg. These data were obtained by determining the boiling points of the pure materials at various pressures by using differential thermal analysis. The boiling points were determined with a precision of -.1 degree Centigrade at a 95 per cent C.I. The Antoine equation was used to analytically describe the data. The constants for this equation were determined by a multiple linear regression technique for each individual compound. The heats of …

Samples of synthetic pyrolusite were reduced in hydrogen at various partial pressures in the temperature range of 200° to 500°C. Most reduction experiments were conducted using a Pyrex vertical-tube reactor, in which small beds of porous particles (0.07 to 0.21 mm.) or single porous pellets of the oxide were suspended. The reaction kinetics were followed by recovering and weighing the water product formed during measured time intervals, and the intermediate reduction products were identified by X-ray diffraction analysis.

This work was performed to investigate the response and stability of a jacketed kettle with internal heating/cooling coils and glasteel thermowell. This system was first analyzed mathematically by deriving transfer functions for each component and then combining all component equations together to give the overall system transfer function. The mathematical model was then checked by frequency response analysis of the system. Bode plots of the system were prepared and the effect of the thermowell was analyzed.

The effects of heat and mass transfer across a frosted heat exchanger operating in the absence of air was evaluated. It is felt that this work could be applied to processes such as desalination of water or the purification of materials by reverse sublimation.

The system consisted of a single 1/2” O.D. stainless steel tube mounted within a 3" O.D. plexiglas tube with the ends suitably flanged. A vacuum was maintained in the annular space. Chemical reactions were carried out to determine the products of the halogenation of cyclic acetals with N-halo compounds (specifically N-bromosuccinimide and N-chlorosuccinimide) under conditions essentially free of those directly associated with free radical mechanisms (photocatalysis, peroxides, azonitriles, etc.).

Cyclic acetals were prepared and halogenated with bromine (Br2) or N-bromosuccinimide (NBS) or N-chlorosuccinimide (NCS). The distilled product from each reaction after workup was analyzed by vapor phase chromatography (VPC). The major components from the VPC were collected and identified by either infrared (IR) or nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and elementary analysis.
