The use of AGc loops at the input and output of the FM link in an AM-FM telemetry system allows the mean-square transmitter deviation to be maintained near maximum value, even though data may be nonstationary. However, errors result because of the inability of the receiver AGc loop to track perfectly gain variations in the transmitter loop. In this paper the general characteristics of AGc are discussed, and a theoretical analysis is performed to determine the time constant, steady-state error, and tracking error for a first-order loop. Also, tracking error for first order and second-order loops is investigated by simulation. …

"An experimental laboratory study conducted to examine clogging within and penetration of fines into a single layer graded filter. Hydraulic gradient, filter gradation and flow direction were varied. Forty one tests gave over six hundred individual penetration depths. The magnitude of penetration in filters with considerable variation in gradation patterns correlated with an average hydraulic radius based on the volume of voids and an approximated total surface area. It has been shown than an increased thickness of poorly graded filter will stop penetration such as that caused by seepage erosion. "The purpose of this investigation was to study the effect of instrument parameter changes upon X-ray intensity measurements of the copper-manganese system. The parameters utilized in this study included: (1) polished, contaminated, and 600 grit surfaces ; (2) constant sample current and constant beam current modes; and (3) 15 KV, 20 KV, and 25 KV accelerating potentials. Bonded molybdenum disulphide and bonded graphite were the lubricants tested. Dow Corning's LFW-1 and Falex lubricant tester were the two machines used for testing these lubricants. The lubricants were sprayed on the specimen surface. Pretreatment, spraying and curlng were done according to standard or manufacturer's recommended procedures. "An approximate method for the solution of thermal stress problems is presented. The method makes use of polynomial approximations to reduce the partial differential equation to a system of linear algebraic equations or a set of first-order ordinary differential equations. This results in satisfying the differential equation at a finite number of stations. The boundary conditions are satisfied identically. Two examples of the method, presented in detail, indicate that the solutions of the biharmonic equation for the stress function and the Fourier equation for the temperature distribution have good accuracy with a minimum of labor. Changes in the hydrologic equilibrium of a river basin resulting from resource development also produce changes in the quality pattern. Since the burden of quality maintenance must be shared by users (just as are quantities) predictions are needed for quality changes which might result from contemplated development at any specified location within the river system. This study reports the development of a computer simulation model of the water and salt flow systems within the Upper Colorado River basin. "This study constituted an examination of both nucleate boiling and maximum heat flux characteristics of liquid nitrogen boiling from characterized surfaces. Several textures of gold plated copper surfaces were studied in addition to silver and silver oxide surfaces. Data were taken over a wide range of reduced pressures. All surfaces were examined using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Data and micrograph comparison revealed that both surface chemistry and surface roughness affect the nucleate boiling characteristics of liquid nitrogen. These effects are separated from each other showing that nucleate boiling is a function of both surface chemistry and topography. Surface roughness …

"The anodic oxidation of 1,3-butadiene on Pt and Au electrodes was studied at 70°C in solutions of H₂SO₄, K₂SO₄, K₂CO₃, and KOH with pH's ranging from 0.35 to 12.5. Reaction rates (current) were measured as a function of potential, pH, temperature, and butadiene partial pressure. A transition region (apparently a shift in the rate determining step) in case of Pt was observed in the Tafel plots. The coulombic efficiencies of oxidation to CO₂ were 85 percent in 1 N H₂SO₄ on Pt, 93 percent in 1 N KOH on Pt, and 72 percent in 1 N KOH on Au"--Abstract, Page …

The following conclusions were possible: 1. Mo is in general electrochemically oxidized to the Mo-VI state during anodic dissolution. 2. The resultant ions in solution are HMOO⁻₄. 3. "The purpose of this investigation was to study the anodic dissolution of zinc at a temperature of 25°C in Br⁻-BrO₃; solutions. In Br⁻ solutions, it was found that the apparent valences of zinc ions going into solution were approximately the normal value of two. Smaller values were obtained in BrO⁻₃ solutions, with the most pronounced changes occurring in the higher concentrations of BrO⁻₃.
