Solar-Cell Design Based On A Distributed Diode Analysis, Jack L. Boone, Thomas P. Van Doren Jan 1978

Solar-Cell Design Based On A Distributed Diode Analysis, Jack L. Boone, Thomas P. Van Doren

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The front surface of a p-n junction solar cell has resistive losses associated with the diffused layer, the metal-semiconductor contact, and the grid structure. These losses are analyzed by considering the spatially distributed nature of the p-n junction and the grid conductors. This distributed diode analysis is especially useful for solar cells operated under concentrated sunlight conditions. The results show the dependence of the V-I characteristics and the maximum power output per unit cell on the ratio of the diffused layer resistance to the junction dynamic resistance. This ratio can assist the designer in establishing proper grid structure geometries and …

Vehicle Detection Using A Magnetic Field Sensor, Stanley V. Marshall Jan 1978

Vehicle Detection Using A Magnetic Field Sensor, Stanley V. Marshall

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The measurement of vehicle magnetic moments and the results from use of a fluxgate magnetic sensor to actuate a lighting system from the magnetic fields of passing vehicles is reported. A typical U.S. automobile has a magnetic moment of about 200 A-m2(Ampere-meters2), while for a school bus it is about 2000 A-m2. When the vehicle is modeled as an ideal magnetic dipole with a moment of 200 A-m2, the predicted results from an analysis of the sensor-vehicle geometry agree closely with observations of the system response to automobiles. A Hydrologic Analysis Of The Meramec River Basin, Missouri, Glendon Taylor Stevens Iii Jan 1978

A Hydrologic Analysis Of The Meramec River Basin, Missouri, Glendon Taylor Stevens Iii

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this study was to develop water budgets for the Meramec River Basin. These budgets, developed from average annual data, are quantitative assessments of the basin's water resources.

On a long-term basis, inflow was approximately balanced by outflow indicating that the system is steady state.

Precipitation was found to be the only substantial source of inflow to the basin and averages about 40 inches per year.

Evapotranspiration was found to be the major source of outflow from the basin. Annually it accounts for about three quarters of the total outflow and averages about 30 inches.

Streamflow was found …

An X-Ray Diffraction Analysis Of The Lacro₃-Laalo₃ Solid Solution Series, Robin Ashley Murphy Jan 1978

An X-Ray Diffraction Analysis Of The Lacro₃-Laalo₃ Solid Solution Series, Robin Ashley Murphy

Masters Theses

"A crystallographic study was made of powders from the LaCr1-x AlxO₃, La.90(Mg.05 Cr1-x Alx ).95O2.83 , and La1±xCrO₃ systems. The relationships between composition and thermal expansion, electrical conductivity, and vaporization were also investigated. The x-ray diffraction data of the LaCrCO₃ - LaAlO₃ compounds showed the system to form a single phase solid solution for any given sample from the series. The orthorhombic to rhombohedral phase transition was depressed to below room temperature at approximately 13% Al+3 substitution"--Abstract, page ii.

Utilization Of Waste Heat From The University Of Missouri Research Reactor., Anek Punyakumleard

Masters Theses

"An analysis has been conducted to determine the economic as well as technical feasibility of using waste heat from the University of Missouri Research Reactor (MURR) to heat the reactor containment building and the associated laboratory building.

Several methods of waste heat utilization were reviewed, including open field agriculture, animal shelter heating, aquaculture, waste water treatment, and space heating. Based on this review, it was concluded that several of these waste heat utilization methods are feasible for the MURR. However, the most practical means of utilizing the MURR waste heat appears to be for space heating in the reactor containment …

Realization Of A Fast Automatic Correlation Algorithm For Registration Of Satellite Images, John E. Kassak

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The requirement for a fast automated correlation algorithm for registration of satellite images is discussed. An overview of current registration techniques is presented indicating a correlator, matching binary maps compressed from the original imagery, may provide the required throughput when implemented with a dedicated hardware/processor. An actual registration problem utilizing GOES digitally processed imagery is chosen and defined. The realization of a fast correlator, matching image input data with sampled data base reference image data in real time is considered.

Design Curves For Groundwater Mounds Beneath Recharging Basins, Jack Weinstein Jan 1978

Design Curves For Groundwater Mounds Beneath Recharging Basins, Jack Weinstein

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Design curves are developed to simplify solution of the Hantush (1967) equation for groundwater mound build-up under a rectangular recharge basin. Curves are developed by analyzing a large number of solutions to the theoretical equation. Two sets of curves are developed, one for build-up beneath the center of the basin, the second for build-up anywhere in the field. Center-point curves are presented for 3 basins with length to width ratios of 2 to 1, and were easily developed. The more generalized curves are developed for the limited case of a 200 ft by 100 ft basin and are complicated by …

Articles

Several step-by-step methods for the computer solution systems of coupled second-order ordinary differential equations, are examined from the point of view of efficiency “time-wise” and “storage-wise”. Particular reference is made to a system arising in the close-coupling approximation of the Schroedinger equation. The stability of the solution is also considered.

Although experimental verification of Onsager's reciprocal relations has been achieved in a variety of cases, no quantitative test of the heat-mass reciprocal relation for a binary liquid system has previously been reported. We present in this communication experimental proof of the equality of the mass-heat reciprocal relation for the system carbon tetrachloride - cyclohezane.

Boeing Engineering And Construction; Groundwater And Surface Water Investigation Report, C. Earl Israelsen, Frank W. Haws

Reports

Boeing Engineering and Construction (BEAC) is investigating the feasibility of transporting Utah coal via slurry pipeline to the west coast. Such an investigation requires an abundance of data concerning such things as they availability and quality of water which can be slurried with coal, the location of such water with respect to the deposits of coal, and the ultimate disposal of the water at the pipeline's end.

This study generated a limited amount of new data and gathered existing data and information related to surface and underground water within a 50-mile radius of Emery, Utah, but restricted primarily to the …
