This paper presents the results of an experimental full scale test program for determining design information for shear wall diaphragms constructed of steel studs and gypsum wallboard with different aspect ratios. Wall construction used is representative of the type of construction commonly used for interior wall partitions. Testing is performed in accordance with- ASTM E 564 - 76.

Water Conservation Information Dissemination During The 1997 Drought Emergency, L. Douglas James, Wade H. Andrews Jun 1978

Water Conservation Information Dissemination During The 1997 Drought Emergency, L. Douglas James, Wade H. Andrews

Reports

As drought conditions in 1976 and 1977 became increasingly severe throughout the west and affected many other parts of the country, many states began special drought information dissemination efforts. This study was organized to provide for the exchange of information among the respective states a forum that could reduce duplication among independent efforts. The project collected information. on: A) Water-user conservation practices, 1) domestic use, a) inside use, b) outside use, 2) industrial, 3) commercial, and 4) irrigation; B) Water-supplier management practices, 1) water conservation Inducements, 2) emergency supply augmentation, a) groundwater mining, b) water harvesting, c) water reuse, 8) …

Numerical Control Machining, Dennis L. Maclennan Jun 1978

Numerical Control Machining, Dennis L. Maclennan

Graduate Research Papers

Accurate and timely data depicting major aspects of manufacturing are essential to allow management to exercise effective controls for investments relating to automated equipment. One specific area of automated equipment can be termed "numerical control" (N/C) . "N/C is a technique for the control of production tools by information prerecorded in symbolic form (Devries, 1971, p. 1)." l This study is concerned with gathering material on the functional use and operation of N/C equipment. Specifically, the following areas of study were:

(1) to gather historical information on N/C equipment development;

(2) to investigate who are the major manufacturers of N/C …

Sizing Of Liquid Manure Tank Wagons And The Economic Evaluation Of Liquid Manure Injection, J.N. Scarborough, Elbert C. Dickey, D. H. Vanderholm Jun 1978

Sizing Of Liquid Manure Tank Wagons And The Economic Evaluation Of Liquid Manure Injection, J.N. Scarborough, Elbert C. Dickey, D. H. Vanderholm

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Liquid manure tank wagons were evaluated on a cost basis to determine the optimum size for a given livestock operation. Also the economics of adding a liquid injector to the tank wagon was studied for profitability.

INTRODUCTION

The proper selection of a liquid manure tank wagon is a problem faced by many progressive livestock producers with liquid manure systems. Selection of a manure tank wagon is usually based on the farmer's or dealer's opinion of what size is right rather than on a logical analysis including an economic analysis of the costs involved. This paper provides guidelines for selecting the …

The Use Of Windmills As A Potential Energy Alternative, James A. Long Jun 1978

The Use Of Windmills As A Potential Energy Alternative, James A. Long

Graduate Research Papers

The use of wind as an energy source has been used for many centuries to do work for man. Wind energy has long been recognized as a potentially abundant source of power. In this area of the United States windmills once dotted the landscape providing a means of pumping water and for mechanical power. It also was used for generation of electrical power on farms before the advent of the rural electrification program. In recent years, however, the reliance upon fossil fuels to supply man with energy has virtually eliminated his reliance upon wind as an energy source. With the …

Dynamics Of Submerged Cylindrical Shells With Eccentric Stiffening, Kerry Kier-Ten Chu May 1978

Dynamics Of Submerged Cylindrical Shells With Eccentric Stiffening, Kerry Kier-Ten Chu

Dissertations

A theoretical analysis is presented for treating the free vibrations of submerged, ring stiffened cylindrical shells with simply supported ends. The effects of the eccentric stiffeners are averaged over the thin-walled isotropic cylindrical shell. The energy method is utilized and the frequency equation is derived by Hamilton's Principle. All three degrees of freedom are considered. Numerical results are presented for frequencies and mode separation for several cases of interest. Comparisons with previous theoretical and experimental results indicate good agreement. The cylindrical wave approximation and the plane wave approximation for the field equation were investigated. Their applicability was evaluated and the …

The Continuous Non-Equilibrium Parametric Pump: A Theoretical And Experimental Study, John Lawrence Rak May 1978

The Continuous Non-Equilibrium Parametric Pump: A Theoretical And Experimental Study, John Lawrence Rak

Dissertations

A continuous parametric pump in which the feed and product streams flow steadily both in upflow and downflow (hot and cold temperatures, respectively) is examined theoretically and experimentally. The model system is Sodium Chloride-Water-Bio Rad AG11A8 Ion Retardation Resin, a physical system characterized by relatively slow interphase mass transfer rates. For short half-cycle times, where interphase equilibrium is not approached, separation of the salt from water is found to be enhanced by longer half-cycle times, smaller reservoir displacements, and longer adsorbant columns. In most cases, separation improves with increasing number of cycles. However, steadily degrading separation is found to exist …

Deposition Of Suspensions In Laminar Flow In The Entrance Region Of Channels With Diffusive, Electrostatic And Gravitational Effects, Thomas Anthony Korjack May 1978

Deposition Of Suspensions In Laminar Flow In The Entrance Region Of Channels With Diffusive, Electrostatic And Gravitational Effects, Thomas Anthony Korjack

Dissertations

This investigation entailed the consideration of the deposition of suspensions in laminar flow in the entrance region of a parallel-plate channel, and both converging and diverging channels, under the combined influences of diffusive, electrostatic and gravitational effects. The fluid phase was assumed to be incompressible, steady and laminar; the particle phase was assumed to be steady, laminar, dilute, and with negligible lift force.

The complete solution of the problem involved solving the boundary layer equations for the completely viscous fluid phase, and the particulate momentum, continuity and potential equations for the particle phase. Since the resulting equations are non-linear partial …
