Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Coupling efficiency an alignment sensitivity models for the coupling of light from a fundamental mode Gaussian light beam into a single mode optical fiber are given. Experimental results are presented which verify the coupling and misalignment predictions of the models. Data were taken at two wavelengths: 0.6328 and 0.8460 micrometers. The light sources were a HeNe laser and a GaAlAs laser respectively. Coupling efficiencies were measured versus beam spot size; and lateral, axial and angular misalignments of the beam and fiber axes.

Optimization Of Stormwater Management Practices And Processes, Mark Michael Calabrese Apr 1979

Optimization Of Stormwater Management Practices And Processes, Mark Michael Calabrese

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, stormwater has been found to be a major source of pollution to receiving waters. Major research efforts have been directed in this area, primarily as a result of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act and Public law 92-500, the 1972 Amendments to the act. Yet, a need remains for more data in the field of stormwater management. Such needs include cost-performance data and planning methodologies to optimally select best management practices (BMP's). The research culminating in this report addresses these needs. A computer program, "MANAGE", has been written to generate cost/efficiency curves, and uses these curves to …

Energy Fact Sheet: Heat Pumps For Residential Heating And Cooling: Some Questions And Answers, Larry W. Turner

Agricultural Engineering Energy Series

WHAT IS A HEAT PUMP?

A heat pump is an electrically-powered refrigeration cycle device which is capable of providing both heating and cooling to a residence. In the summer, it operates like an air conditioner by "moving" heat from inside the house to the outside. In the winter, the refrigerant flow is reversed, "moving" heat into the house by further chilling the already cold outside air and transferring the heat gained in the process to the inside.

An Evaluation Of Permissive Left-Turn Phasing, Kenneth R. Agent Apr 1979

An Evaluation Of Permissive Left-Turn Phasing, Kenneth R. Agent

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

In this study, exclusive left-turn phasing was replaced with permissive left-turn phasing at four trial intersections. Delay and accident studies were done before and after the trial installations. Also, a questionnaire was issued to determine public opinion concerning the signals.

The use of permissive-turn phasing resulted in a 50-percent reduction in left-turn delay and a 24-percent reduction in total delay compared to exclusive phasing. The permissive left-turn phasing did result in an increase in left-turn accidents. Other accident types, such as rear-end accidents, did not change. The number of left-turn accidents decreased as drivers became more familiar with the signals. …

Fatigue Damage Of Flexible Pavements Under Heavy Loads, James H. Havens, Herbert F. Southgate, Robert C. Deen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

A modified Chevron N-Layer computer program has the capability of calculating the "work" done by the total load on a given load group. Earlier analyses of AASHO Road Test sections and test vehicles had permitted the development of damage factor relationships. This paper presents seven, namely two-tire and four-tire single axles, tandems, triaxles, and four-axle, five-axle, and six-axle groups. The two-tire axle (front or steering axle) has the most severe damage relationship. The 80-kN (18-kip) four-tire single axle was used as the reference axle and was assigned a damage factor of 1.0 for a specific amount of "work". Other axle …

Synchronization Strategies, Mishell J. Stucki, Jerome R. Cox Jr Apr 1979

Synchronization Strategies, Mishell J. Stucki, Jerome R. Cox Jr

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Computing systems are now frequently composed of independently clocked subsystems that cooperate to perform the function desired for the whole. This type of architecture has many advantages and promises to be the standard for the foreseeable future. With the trend towards more and more gates per chip, the number of chips per subsystem gets smaller and smaller, and we can expect to soon see one or more subsystems per chip. This transition will require contributions from disciplines previously outside the field of chip design, and every issue will have to be carefully worked out beforehand because debugging chips of this …

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

An assessment of the environmental effects of the nuclear fuel cycle industries is discussed, reactor waste inventory and standards are presented, and the alternatives for high-level radioactive waste disposal reviewed, with particular attention being given to disposal in deep geological formations on land. One of the major concerns regarding potential impacts of the nuclear fuel cycle industries is the lack of a definite and proven method of disposal of the high-level radioactive wastes from light water moderated reactors. The problem is expected to become more pressing as the nuclear power industry and the associated radioactive waste inventories grow in the …

An Introduction To The Winograd Discrete Fourier Transform, Janice S. Agnello Apr 1979

An Introduction To The Winograd Discrete Fourier Transform, Janice S. Agnello

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This paper illustrates Winograd's approach to computing the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT). This new approach changes the DFT into a cyclic convolution of 2 sequences, and illustrates shortcuts for computing this cyclic convolution. This method is known to reduce the number of multiplies required to about 20% less than the number of multiplies used by the techniques of the Fast Fourier Transform. Three approaches are discussed, one for prime numbers, one for products of primes, and lastly one for powers of odd primes. For powers of 2 Winograd's algorithm is, in general, inefficient and best if it is not used. …

In large enough quantities, heavy metals may be detrimental to human health. Metals in raw water may pass through a water treatment plant without being completely removed. Once in a the distribution system, the water may experience metal pick-up due to corrosion. During the course of this study, an attempt was made to determine the heavy metal concentrations in the University of Central Florida's potable water systems. Samples were fun on the plasma spectrophotometer, Spectraspan III, and analyzed for heavy metal content. The results indicate pick-up of Fe, Al, Cu, and Zn in the distribution system. The arsenic and lead …

Curing And Flow Of Thermosetting Resins For Composite Materials Pultrusion, Howard L. Price Jr. Apr 1979

Curing And Flow Of Thermosetting Resins For Composite Materials Pultrusion, Howard L. Price Jr.

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Fibrous composite materials for mechanical and structural applications often are expensive due to high labor costs. One economical way of making composites is pultrusion, a manufacturing process in which resin-impregnated fibers are pulled at a constant speed through a heated die which shapes the resin-fiber mass and cures the resin. Most of the work which has been done on the process has been of an empirical nature, with limited understanding of the process principles. Most of the experience with pultrusion has been gained with polyester resins and glass fibers. Very little experience has been gained with higher performance, more costly …

Validation Of A Transient Simulation Program (Trnsys), Brian F. Goldiez Apr 1979

Validation Of A Transient Simulation Program (Trnsys), Brian F. Goldiez

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Although a Transient Simulation Program (TRNSYS) has become a widely used model for simulating a solar energy system, there has not been extensive work done in validating this model with actual data. The approach used to validate this model consisted of a modular buildup of components with validation for each module. Extreme care was taken in choosing the necessary parameters to model each component. Where parameters were not given, they were either derived or reasonable values were selected based upon general conditions prevailing in Central Florida or conditions which are generally true for certain solar hot water systems. The intent …

Transformation Of Fresnel’S Interface Reflection And Transmission Coefficients Between Normal And Oblique Incidence, R. M.A. Azzam Apr 1979

Transformation Of Fresnel’S Interface Reflection And Transmission Coefficients Between Normal And Oblique Incidence, R. M.A. Azzam

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

If w denotes an interface Fresnel reflection or transmission coefficient for s- or p-polarized light at an oblique angle of incidence ø, and z denotes the same coefficient at normal incidence, we find that w is an analytic function of z, w = ƒ(z), that depends on ø but not on the specific optical properties of the two media on both sides of the interface. All four functions that correspond to the four distinct Fresnel coefficients and their inverses are determined. We single out for detailed examination, as an example, the relationship between the reflection of s -polarized light at …

Scalar‐Wave Approach For Single‐Mode Inhomogeneous Fiber Problems, Lee W. Casperson, Cavour W. Yeh, W. P. Brown Apr 1979

Scalar‐Wave Approach For Single‐Mode Inhomogeneous Fiber Problems, Lee W. Casperson, Cavour W. Yeh, W. P. Brown

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

It has generally been accepted that accurate results may be obtained using the scalar‐wave approach to solve problems dealing with inhomogeneous multimode guided‐wave structures. The problem of the applicability of the scalar‐wave approach to obtain wave propagation characteristics in single‐mode fiber or integrated optical circuit guides with inhomogeneous index profiles is examined in this paper. It is shown that if certain limiting conditions are satisfied, the scalar‐wave approach will yield valid results for single‐mode structures. These limiting conditions are usually satisfied by many practical single‐mode inhomogeneous fibers or IOC structures.
