Analysis Of Scheduling For Low Cost Part Task Trainers, William Fellows

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study develops a methodology for the analysis of Part Task Trainer (PTT) refresh scheduling used in conjunction with large simulators. A human performance model is defined through the development of descriptive equations and system random variables. PTT scheduling calculations are performed by employing a computer program simulation. The computer algorithm generates a set of random vectors to represent the learning characteristics of a sample group of individual trainees. The relationships between simulator scheduling time, PTT frequency training, and model variables are demonstrated to be user interactive. This will allow the PTT refresh scheduling program to be used as an …

User’S Manual For Dynamic Programming For Highway Safety Improvement Program, Jesse G. Mayes, Joseph D. Crabtree Jul 1983

User’S Manual For Dynamic Programming For Highway Safety Improvement Program, Jesse G. Mayes, Joseph D. Crabtree

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The term, dynamic programming, was first used by Bellman to represent the mathematical theory of a multistage decision process. Dynamic programming is applied to allocate expenditures so that maximum benefits result. Three types of applications of dynamic programming are single-stage, multistage, and multistage with a time factor. Single-stage programming is used to evaluate a single project having several alternatives. Multistage programming involves selection of several projects having several alternatives. Multistage dynamic programming with a time factor is used where several projects and alternatives are considered and where various time periods are involved.

The Design Of A Deep Ocean Hydrophone, Michael F. Hackathorn Jul 1983

The Design Of A Deep Ocean Hydrophone, Michael F. Hackathorn

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A design for a deep ocean hydrophone is proposed here. The hydrophone's sound sensing element is comprised of a capped end, piezoelectric cylinder. This sound sensing element is encased in an acoustic coupling fluid filled elastomeric boot. A small diameter tube communicates hydrostatic pressure from the coupling fluid to the interior of the sound sensing element for hydrostatic pressure compensation. The theoretical free field voltage sensitivity, the ratio of open circuit voltage to incident acoustic pressure, is predicted from mathematical model of the sound sensing element.

Interactive Computer Aided Design And Animation Of Spatial Mechanisms, Emmet B. Peter Jul 1983

Interactive Computer Aided Design And Animation Of Spatial Mechanisms, Emmet B. Peter

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The synthesis of planar and spatial mechanisms is often accomplished by either trial and error supplemented by computer analysis or by specific analytical techniques in the literature. In either case it is extremely helpful to be able to visualize a physical design as it emerges, and to see a graphic display of it in animated motion. This paper describes the development of a general interactive program for both analyzing and viewing a spatial 4-bar (RSSR) mechanism in animated motion. The analysis provides complete position, velocity, and acceleration information and, for the special case of the planar 4-bar, the same information …

Pressure Drop Across A Tube Support Plate Of Trefoil Geometry Used In Steam Generator, Raad H. Bashar Jul 1983

Pressure Drop Across A Tube Support Plate Of Trefoil Geometry Used In Steam Generator, Raad H. Bashar

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This research is concerned with the presentation of pressure drop experimental results across a restriction of trefoil geometry (tube support plate) used in steam generators. The pressure drops were obtained for single-phase and two-phase of air, water, and their mixtures. The tests were performed at atmospheric conditions (pressure and temperature). The loss coefficients associated with these pressure drops were experimentally determined, and empirical correlations for the results were developed. The results were compared with previous studies done on other geometries with air-water mixtures, and also to a similar geometry with steam-water mixture.

Maximum Minimum Reflectance Of Parallel-Polarized Light At Interfaces Between Transparent And Absorbing Media, R. M.A. Azzam Jul 1983

Maximum Minimum Reflectance Of Parallel-Polarized Light At Interfaces Between Transparent And Absorbing Media, R. M.A. Azzam

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

The pseudo-Brewster angle ØpB, of minimum reflectance Rpm for the parallel (p) polarization, of an interface between a transparent and an absorbing medium is determined by Im{(∊ - u)[1 - (1 + ∊-1)u]2} = 0, where ∊ is the complex ratio of dielectric constants of the media and u = sin2øpB. It is shown that, for a given value of the normal-incidence amplitude reflectance |r|, there is an associated normal-incidence phase shift, δ = δmm, that leads to maximum minimum parallel reflectance, …

The Relative Importance Of Competencies Needed By Industrial Energy Managers From The Larger Manufacturers In Iowa, Timothy J. Eibes Jul 1983

The Relative Importance Of Competencies Needed By Industrial Energy Managers From The Larger Manufacturers In Iowa, Timothy J. Eibes

Graduate Research Papers

The importance of identifying the competencies needed by energy managers is reflected in the seriousness of the energy problem and the impact it has on the industrial setting. The newness and ambiguity of EM, coupled with the increasing importance of the concept, add to the need for identifying the necessary competencies required in managing energy.

Ideally, once these competencies are identified, they should be the focus of those educational curriculums designed to produce energy managers. Currently there are only 25 post-high school institutions in the U.S. that have energy management curriculums (The College Blue Book, 1981). Less than half of …

The Use Of Complex Versus Normal Modes In Structural Model Improvement, Chih Lin Jul 1983

The Use Of Complex Versus Normal Modes In Structural Model Improvement, Chih Lin

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In the past, normal modes approximation to complex modes was employed by most researchers or users in the process of identification or modification of structural systems. This is true, of course for simple structures with no or proportional damping. For complex structures with nonproportional damping, even level of which is small, it will be shown that applying this approximation is inadequate. Use of complex modes instead of approximated normal modes is justified.

An algorithm is presented that computes a set of normal modes from the corresponding measured complex modes. The computed normal modes are then used in the Berman's technique …

Experiments Conducted On The Electron Beam Produced By A Dense Plasma Focus, Mark Steven Pronko Jul 1983

Experiments Conducted On The Electron Beam Produced By A Dense Plasma Focus, Mark Steven Pronko

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

An experimental investigation was conducted using a 34-kJ Dense Plasma Focus (DPF) in which the possible enhancement of the electron beam was addressed. Electron beams ejected from the DPF have been observed to exceed 30 kA with pulse durations of a few nanoseconds. Enhancement was considered to be either an increase in the probability that the peak beam current exceeded some lower limit, or an increase in the mean energy of the beam electrons. The investigation was divided into two parts, each addressing one of the aspects of enhancement.

In the first part of the investigation, an axial magnetic field …

Analysis And Stability Of Closed Surge Tanks, John Emory Fowler Jul 1983

Analysis And Stability Of Closed Surge Tanks, John Emory Fowler

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The equations representing the water surface oscillations in a closed surge tank form a set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations when the system is considered as lumped. Because of the nonlinear terms present in the equations, a closed-form solution of the equations is not available. Several numerical methods ranging from single step methods to higher-order multi-step methods were used to find numerical solutions to the governing equations. As all the methods required a similar amount of CPU time, the degree of accuracy required would determine which numerical method should be used. The effect of various system parameters on the stability …

Saint-Venant's Principle In Linear Elasticity With Microstructure, R. C. Batra Jul 1983

Saint-Venant's Principle In Linear Elasticity With Microstructure, R. C. Batra

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Toupin's version of the Saint-Venant principle in linear elasticity is generalized to the case of linear elasticity with microstructure. That is, it is shown that, for a straight prismatic bar made of an isotropic linear elastic material with microstructure and loaded by a self-equilibrated force system at one end only, the strain energy stored in the portion of the bar which is beyond a distance s from the loaded end decreases exponentially with the distance s. © 1983 Martinus Nijhoff Publishers.

Fuel And Process Efficiency's Affect On The Selection Of Surface Heat-Treating Processes, Christopher Scott Thorman

Graduate Research Papers

Ever since the advent of the Industrial Revolution part components and tooling have required production heat-treating to maximize life. Various forms of heat-treatment are available to heat-treating technologists and engineers, all of which have their advantages. To maximize investment, managers must decide between new processes to gain efficiency and the updating of current process to improve efficiency. Cost considerations are important but not the only ones. Quality and safety are also important to remember.

Production capacity, both present and future, is also related to cost effectiveness of heat-treating process. The heat-up and cool-down aspect which is a vital characteristic to …

Designing And Installing Commercial Solar Pool Heating Systems, Florida Solar Energy Center, Douglass E. Root Jun 1983

Designing And Installing Commercial Solar Pool Heating Systems, Florida Solar Energy Center, Douglass E. Root

FSEC Energy Research Center®

Solar heating of swimming pools is an economically attractive utilization of Florida's abundant solar resource. The temperature requirement is lower than that of domestic or service water heating, lower than that for building heating and far lower than that for solar powered air conditioning. Florida's year-round mild and sunny climate allows swimming during much of the winter, so a properly heated pool is economically attractive.

Enrollment Of Girls In Industrial Arts Courses From 1977-82 In Iowa High Schools, Ronald A, Wunderlich

Graduate Research Papers

Girls have enrolled in high school industrial arts classes for many years. In a thesis completed in 1958 (Haynes, 1958), it was recorded that 16 percent of Iowa's high schools enrolled girls in industrial arts courses. Today, it is a rare exception to find a high school industrial arts program that does not enroll girls. From district to district and year to year the numbers vary. It is the intention of this study to determine if the enrollment of girls is decreasing, increasing, or remaining constant. This information is needed to provide a further understanding of the enrollment of girls …

Optimization Of A New Linear Fm Detector Using Digital Signal Processing Techniques, Edward J.A. Kratt May 1983

Optimization Of A New Linear Fm Detector Using Digital Signal Processing Techniques, Edward J.A. Kratt

Dissertations

This dissertation describes and synthesizes a new member of the family of FM detectors introduced earlier by Klapper and Kratt. A salient property of these detectors is low delay with excellent sensitivity. The emphasis in the new detector is on the ease of digital implementation. In addition, the new detector is also extremely linear. In congruence with the other Klapper-Kratt detectors, it makes use of zero group delay elements, balance at RF, quasi-synchronous detection and carrier cancellation. The Performance of the detector is mathematically analyzed under the conditions of a modulated input wave, sinewave [sic] interference, and noise. The results …
