Using Simulation To Predict The Financial Effect Of Hospital Management Policies Under A Prospective Reimbursement, Timothy G. Atkins Jan 1984

Using Simulation To Predict The Financial Effect Of Hospital Management Policies Under A Prospective Reimbursement, Timothy G. Atkins

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Recent legislation by Medicare restricts its reimbursement per patient according to the patient's particular type of disease. The reimbursement is based on a set of Diagnosis Related Groups (DRG's), which categorizes patients into disease classifications. As a result, hospitals must make efficiency gains and managers must look for new ways to provide quality care while containing costs. A simulation technique was developed by which the financial results of particular administrative policies can be predicted. Patient billing data were collected over a three-month period and analyzed for the purpose of simulating length of stay and resource consumption per cost center. Regression …

Kerosene Heaters, L. R. Piercy, S. S. Holland, E. S. Holmes, Donald G. Colliver

Agricultural Engineering Energy Series

Many families are buying supplemental space heating units in an attempt to use heat only where it is needed and thus lower the total heating bill. lf you turn down your central heat thermostat and place such a unit in a room where the family spends most of their waking hours, heating bills may be reduced. Such savings appear to be significant, but each family first needs to carefully consider the safety risks and their energy savings potential as well as the lifestyle changes that might be necessary.

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

This case study of rutting in an asphaltic concrete pavement makes recourse to trenching full width and full depth to expose and observe the entire cross section of the structure. Rutting occurred in the vicinity of Station 59+00 on US 23, 1.5 miles north of Louisa, during August and September 1983 when traffic was diverted onto newly constructed northbound lanes (without final surface and shouldering) while excavation into the hillside was completed for the southbound lanes. Earth movers crossed the northbound lanes going to and from a waste area. Coal trucks (Figures 1 and 2) slowed, stopped, and crept where …

Transformation Of Phosphorus In Highway Runoff Management Systems, David B. Pearce Jan 1984

Transformation Of Phosphorus In Highway Runoff Management Systems, David B. Pearce

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The operation and maintenance of highways contributes a variety of pollutants to surface and subsurface waters. Solids, heavy metals, nutrients, oil and grease, pesticides and bacteria can all be associated with highway runoff. Although the full extent of the effect of all these runoff constituents upon the quality of surrounding waters is not well defined, this study will mainly concentrate on nutrient contaminants (essentially phosphorus). The last decade has seen increasing efforts in research and development to abate contaminant discharges from highway runoff using a number of treatment facilities such as swale and detention/retention ponds. An evaluation of the effectiveness …

Thermally Stimulated Current Studies Of Barium Titanate Capacitors, Patrick Donald Martin Jan 1984

Thermally Stimulated Current Studies Of Barium Titanate Capacitors, Patrick Donald Martin

Masters Theses

"Thermally stimulated polarization current (TSPC) and thermally stimulated depolarization current (TSDC) measurements were used to study sample current behavior based on the thermally activated release of trapped charges and polarization mechanisms. Samples studied included laboratory-prepared barium titanate samples (the barium to titanium ratio ranging from 0.96 to 1.04) and commercial ceramic capacitors. Both TSPC and TSDC showed the current spectra of the barium titanate samples were a function of crystal structure and the Ba/Ti ratio. The TSPC/TSDC results of the ceramic capacitors showed differences between capacitor formulations. TSPC/TSDC results also showed differences between good capacitors (physically and electrically) and capacitors …

Oxygen Activity Dependence Of The Electrical Conductivity Of Li‐Doped Cr2o3, R. F. Huang, A. K. Agarwal, Harlan U. Anderson Jan 1984

Oxygen Activity Dependence Of The Electrical Conductivity Of Li‐Doped Cr2o3, R. F. Huang, A. K. Agarwal, Harlan U. Anderson

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The electrical conductivity of Li‐doped Cr2O3 was investigated as a function of PO2, temperature, and dopant content. Results show that the electrical conductivity remains almost unchanged with decreasing P O2 in the high‐P O2 region but decreases rapidly at low P O2. A second phase was found in samples which contained more than 0.85 mol% Li. The results are explained by a model in which the concentration of charge carriers is dependent on the acceptor dopant and oxygen vacancy concentration. Copyright © 1984, Wiley Blackwell.
