Direct Rate Measurements Of Eruption Plumes At Augustine Volcano: A Problem Of Scaling And Uncontrolled Variables, William I. Rose, Grant Heiken, Kenneth Wohletz, Dean Eppler, Sumner Barr, Theresa Miller, Raymond L. Chuan, R. B. Symonds

Department of Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences Publications

The March–April 1986 eruption of Augustine Volcano, Alaska, provided an opportunity to directly measure the flux of gas, aerosol, and ash particles during explosive eruption. Most previous direct measurements of volcanic emission rates are on plumes from fuming volcanoes or on very small eruption clouds. Direct measurements during explosive activity are needed to understand the scale relationships between passive degassing or small eruption plumes and highly explosive events. Conditions on April 3, 1986 were ideal: high winds, clear visibility, moderate activity. Three measurements were made: 1) an airborne correlation spectrometer (Cospec) provided mass flux rates of SO2; 2) …

Digital Optical Iterative Pattern Recognizer, Samuel Peter Kozaitis, C. S. Kischuk

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

An optical pattern recognizer which classifies an input sequence into one of two classes is described. The language of regular expressions is used to identify a set of input sequences to be recognized. The system is realized without memory elements by using an optical iterative array it with the method of symbolic substitution. The hardware must be able to implement arbitrary and multiple substitution rules for the general design of a pattern recognizer. © 1988 SPIE

Birefringent Light Scattering In Electrooptic Plzt Ceramics, Mark David Ivey May 1988

Birefringent Light Scattering In Electrooptic Plzt Ceramics, Mark David Ivey

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

A study of visible light scattering in thin plates of ceramic PLZT is presented. A scattering model is developed on the basis of multiple refraction from randomly oriented walls in a birefringent medium. The results of this model are compared to measurements of longitudinal-mode light scattering from thin (250 - 650µm) PLZT plates of three different ceramic compositions. The observed light scattering by these ceramics is attributed to two mechanisms which are linked to field-induced ferroelectric anisotropies. The first, referred to by this study as "uncorrelated birefringence," corresponds to the independently-random changes in the index ellipsoid known to occur at …

On Purely Exponential Logic Queries, Kazem Taghva, Tian-Zheng Wu May 1988

On Purely Exponential Logic Queries, Kazem Taghva, Tian-Zheng Wu

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

The recursive nature of logic programs has long been the subject of optimization techniques [2, 8]. Recently, the database community has taken interest in extending the expressive power of relational algebra by augmenting it with function-free Horn style logic queries. This extension has led to various optimization techniques [2, 6, 8]. It seems, almost invariably, these techniques are most efficient in the processing of linear recursive queries. Moreover, as the equivalence of nonlinear rules to linear rules in general is undecidable [3, 9], the best one can hope is to rewrite some nonlinear rules as linear rules. For this reason, …

Evaluation Of Extruded Thermoplastics As Lane Delineation, Kenneth R. Agent, Jerry G. Pigman

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

This study involved an evaluation of large-scale installations of both hydrocarbon and alkyd extruded thermoplastics as lane delineation on sections of interstate highways having open-graded surfaces. The objective of the study was to evaluate the performance of thermoplastics as lane delineation and to compare the performance of hydrocarbon versus alkyd formulations.

Data were collected on a periodic basis over an 18-month period. Data collection consisted of daytime observations of the appearance and durability of the thermoplastic material along with reflectivity measurements using a portable retroreflectometer.

The evaluation revealed that both the hydrocarbon and alkyd extruded thermoplastic material maintained their appearance, …

Using A Partial Order And A Metric To Analyze A Recursive Trace Set Equation, Jan Tijmen Udding, Tom Verhoeff May 1988

Using A Partial Order And A Metric To Analyze A Recursive Trace Set Equation, Jan Tijmen Udding, Tom Verhoeff

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

In Trace Theory the notion of a process is defined in terms of a set of finite-length traces over an alphabet. These processes are used as the semantics for a program notation. The program text for a recursive component naturally gives rise to an equation over trace sets. This paper takes two approaches at the analysis of that equation. The first approach is based on a partial order and it concentrates on the projection operator for processes. This yields a condition under which the greatest solution of that equation can be approximated by iteration. The second approach introduces a metric …

Guide To Revenue Calculations: Local Option Highway User Tax 1988, Herpicc May 1988

Guide To Revenue Calculations: Local Option Highway User Tax 1988, Herpicc

Indiana Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) Publications

This guide is provided to explain the output generated by the computer programs and to suggest ways in which the results can be adapted to specific LOHUT proposals before a County Council. The 1988 LOHUT revenue projections are of special interest because of House Enrolled Act Number 1295. This act (IC 8-11-5) granted each county authority to bond for county roads or bridges, but only if a county has first adopted a LOHUT -- the excise surtax (IC 6-3.5-4) and wheel tax (IC 6-3.5-5).

HERPICC neither endorses nor opposes passage of a LOHUT. The revenue projections it provides are intended …

General Analysis And Optimization Of The Four-Detector Photopolarimeter, R. M.A. Azzam, I. M. Elminyawi, A. M. El-Saba May 1988

General Analysis And Optimization Of The Four-Detector Photopolarimeter, R. M.A. Azzam, I. M. Elminyawi, A. M. El-Saba

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

The four-detector photopolarimeter (FDP) is analyzed for an arbitrary spatial configuration and any reflection characteristics (ri, ψi, Δi) of the first three detectors. The instrument matrix A, which relates the output signal vector I to the input Stokes vector S by I = AS, and its determinant are derived explicitly. The essential condition that A be nonsingular (det A ≠ 0) is satisfied in general with uncoated absorbing detector surfaces, assuming that the plane of incidence (POI) is rotated between successive reflections by other than 90°. Therefore no special coatings on …

Bioavailable Phosphorus In The Bear River System, Utah, Kenneth Warren Barker May 1988

Bioavailable Phosphorus In The Bear River System, Utah, Kenneth Warren Barker

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The bioavailable fraction of phosphorus (BAP) in the lower Bear River system waters was investigated. BAP plays a critical role as the limiting nutrient for algal production and eutrophication in proposed reservoirs in the Bear River system. The Bear River system has a hardness ranging between 180-240 mg/L as CaCO3 which significantly affects BAP.

BAP estimation was done by a modified Selenastrum capricornutum Printz Algal Assay Bottle Test. The algal bioassay is considered the best estimator of BAP because no chemical tests or indicator parameters are available. Autoclaving and UV radiation were found to be unacceptable means for sterilization …

Evaluation Of Spatially-Distributed Snowpack Estimation Using Pattern Recognition, Cheng-Hua Leu May 1988

Evaluation Of Spatially-Distributed Snowpack Estimation Using Pattern Recognition, Cheng-Hua Leu

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A procedure for spatially-distributed snowpack estimate is proposed and evaluated herein. This procedure is divided into two parts, off-line and on-line parts. The off-line procedure uses Fuzzy c-Varieties (FCV) algorithms to perform the watershed classification based on Landsat TM data and a digital elevation model and estimate influence coefficient for all pixels in the watershed. Through the concept of influence coefficient, a set of prototypical points can be selected and located. The on-line procedure estimates snowpack properties at these prototypical points and then transforms them to estimates of snowpack properties at any point in the watershed. To effectively evaluate this …

A Hydrological Characterization Of A Zero-Order Basin In Volcanic Hillslope Terrain, Neil A. Mock May 1988

A Hydrological Characterization Of A Zero-Order Basin In Volcanic Hillslope Terrain, Neil A. Mock

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Hydrologists have displayed a renewed effort towards understanding the complexity of runoff generation and its association with basin structure. Basin structure is defined as the complex geomorphological, vegetation, and soil characteristics that make up and distinguish the physical nature of a drainage basin. Zero-order basins are an integral part of watershed structure because they furnish the capacity to store and transmit snowmelt and rainfall. By definition, zero-order basins are sub-basins which are depressions in the surf ace and shallow bedrock topography. This study involves a space time characterization of a zero-order basin in fractured media located in southwest Idaho.

Investigation Of Accuracy Limitations Of The Ionospheric Plasma Frequency Probe And Recommendations For A New Instrument, Mark Duane Jensen May 1988

Investigation Of Accuracy Limitations Of The Ionospheric Plasma Frequency Probe And Recommendations For A New Instrument, Mark Duane Jensen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A unique wide-range voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) has been part of the plasma frequency probe (PFP) for many years. The uniqueness of this VCO is how it is tuned with an electronic tuneable inductor in conjunction with a varactor diode. Though the PFP has been utilized successfully for rocketborne ionospheric electron density measurements, fine resolution data was limited by strange frequency jumps (approximately 5 percent uncertainty in electron density) which have appeared in flight results. This thesis examines the cause of some of these jumps, and shows they are instrument related and more particularly caused by the ferrite tank inductor core …

The Bureau of Mines, through contract with the Mining Extension Service of West Virginia University, has developed …

Spontaneous Coherent Pulsations In Standing-Wave Laser Oscillators, Lee W. Casperson May 1988

Spontaneous Coherent Pulsations In Standing-Wave Laser Oscillators, Lee W. Casperson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Spontaneous pulsation phenomena in xenon lasers are now well known, and related effects have been observed with other laser types. Most theoretical analyses of such pulsations are formulated for unidirectional ring lasers, whereas most experiments involve standing-wave resonator geometries. Described here are rigorous semiclassical models governing the spontaneous pulsation instability in standing-wave laser oscillators. The standing-wave results are more complex and closer to experimental observations than the ring results for operation in the Lambdip region near line center.

Spectral Behavior And Pulse Train Instabilities Of A Synchronously Pumped Mode-Locked Dye Laser, Duncan Leo Macfarlane, Lee W. Casperson, Anthony A. Tovar May 1988

Spectral Behavior And Pulse Train Instabilities Of A Synchronously Pumped Mode-Locked Dye Laser, Duncan Leo Macfarlane, Lee W. Casperson, Anthony A. Tovar

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The pulse-train envelope of a synchronously pumped mode-locked dye laser has been experimentally studied as a function of cavity length detuning. When a bandwidth-limiting birefringent tuning filter is included and the cavity is adjusted to the length that yields optimally short (˜2-psec) pulse, there is a slow (≤800 kHz), erratic amplitude modulation that provides a 20% variation in pulse energies. As the cavity length is detuned on the order of one part in 10⁴, the modulation vanishes, but the individual pulse lengths increade dramtically. Further detuning results in a clean periodic envelope with a 20% modulation depth and a˜5-μsec period. …

Modal Interference Techniques For Strain Detection In Few-Mode Optical Fibers, Bradley D. Duncan Apr 1988

Modal Interference Techniques For Strain Detection In Few-Mode Optical Fibers, Bradley D. Duncan

Electro-Optics and Photonics Faculty Publications

Interference between the modes of an optical fiber results in specific intensity patterns which can be modulated as a function of disturbances in the optical fiber system. These modulation effects are a direct result of the difference in propagation constants of the constituent modes. In this presentation it is shown how the modulated intensity patterns created by the interference of specific mode groups in few-mode optical fibers (V < 5.0) can be used to detect strain. A detailed discussion of the modal phenomena responsible for the observed strain induced pattern modulation is given and it is shown that strain detection sensitivities on the order of 10-9 can be expected. Data taken during the evaluation of an actual experimental strain detection system based on the developed theory is also presented.

A Feasible Direction Procedure For General Multiple Objective Optimization, Wen-Tsia Liu Apr 1988

A Feasible Direction Procedure For General Multiple Objective Optimization, Wen-Tsia Liu

Dissertations

The Feasible Direction Finding Problem (DFP) of Zoutendijk is adapted to create a general Mathematical Programming (MP) algorithm for treating optimization problems with multiple objective functions. Classically such problems are reduced to standard MP form by converting them to single objective function problems by the use of weighting functions. Unfortunately not all practical problems can be so reduced. Consider the problem of maximizing the strength of a structure. Typically there are several, or even many, failure modes. All active failure modes must be included in the optimal search in such a way that resistance to one active mode can not …

Evaluation Of Lime Stabilized Road Bed, Bobby W. Meade, David L. Allen Apr 1988

Evaluation Of Lime Stabilized Road Bed, Bobby W. Meade, David L. Allen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

In October 1986, the Transportation Research Program of the University of Kentucky published a report evaluating the addition of hydrated lime to the subgrade soils of Section 19 of the Ashland-Alexandria (AA.) highway (1). That study involved laboratory testing only and concluded that the engineering properties of these subgrade soils were significantly improved with the addition of 6 percent (by weight) hydrated lime. It was decided to add hydrated lime to the subgrade soils on Section 19.

Because that procedure had not previously been used in Kentucky, a study was approved to monitor construction procedures and the performance of an …

Parallel Simulated Annealing, Roger D. Chamberlain, Mark N. Edelman, Mark A. Franklin, Ellen E. Witte Apr 1988

Parallel Simulated Annealing, Roger D. Chamberlain, Mark N. Edelman, Mark A. Franklin, Ellen E. Witte

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Since the paper by Kirkpatrick, Gelatt and Vecchi in 1983, the use of Simulated Annealing (SA) in solving combinatoric optimization problems has increased substantially. The SA algorithm has been applied to difficult problems in the difficult problems in the digital design automation such as cell placement and wire routing. While these studies have yielded good or near optimum solutions, they have required very long computer execution times (hours and days). These long times, coupled with the recent availability of the number of commercial parallel processors, has prompted the search for parallel implementations of the SA algorithm. The goal ahs been …

Performance Models For Noahnet, Gurudatta M. Parulkar, Adarshpal S. Sethi, David J. Farber

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Noahnet is an experimental flood local area network with features such as high reliability and high performance. Noahnet uses a randomly connected graph topology with four to five interconnections per node and a flooding protocol to route messages. In Noahnet flooding, the routing of a message from a source to the destination node is a two step process: flooding-growth and flooding-contraction. During the growth of flooding, the message propagates to every node which is not occupied with a message and is reachable from the source node. During the contraction of flooding, the nodes that became occupied during the growth of …

The Evaluation Of Efficiency Determination Of Screening Device (Pressure Screen) By Image Analysis, Rajeev Kumar Goyal Apr 1988

The Evaluation Of Efficiency Determination Of Screening Device (Pressure Screen) By Image Analysis, Rajeev Kumar Goyal

Masters Theses

The Omnicon 3600 image analyzer was used in the study of the evaluation of screening efficiency determination methods. It is very difficult to get a good over all contaminant mass balance across a pressure screen because of the factors involved such as sampling around a screen, time spent in collecting the samples, and possible size reduction of the contaminants by the pump and screen. The image analyzer gives the contaminant analysis in terms of the total number of particles, total area of all the particles, the mean particle area and a histogram of the contaminant size distribution. The histogram data …

Investigation Of Supersonic Chemically Reacting And Radiating Channel Flow, Mortaza Mani Apr 1988

Investigation Of Supersonic Chemically Reacting And Radiating Channel Flow, Mortaza Mani

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The two-dimensional time dependent Navier-Stokes equations are used to investigate supersonic flows undergoing finite rate chemical reaction and radiation interaction for a hydrogen-air system. The explicit multi-stage finite volume technique of Jameson is used to advance the governing equations in time until convergence is achieved. The chemistry source term in the species equation is treated implicitly to alleviate the stiffness associated with fast reactions. The multi-dimensional radiative transfer equations for a nongray model are provided for a general configuration, and then reduced for a planer geometry. Both pseudo-gray and nongray models are used to represent the absorption-emission characteristics of the …

Integral Equation Solution Of The Full Potential Equation For Three-Dimensional, Steady, Transonic Wing Flows, Li-Chuan Chu Apr 1988

Integral Equation Solution Of The Full Potential Equation For Three-Dimensional, Steady, Transonic Wing Flows, Li-Chuan Chu

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

An integral equation method for solving the full potential equation has been developed for three dimensional transonic vortex-wing flows. This method is capable of capturing shocks using the Murman-Cole type of finite difference scheme and is capable of predicting accurate and force-free wake shape as well.

Reading the full potential equation as Poisson's equation, the solution for the velocity field has been expressed in terms of an integral equation using Green's theorem. The solution consists of a surface integral of vorticity distribution on the wing and its free-vortex sheets and a volume integral of source distribution within a computational region …
