Planar Optical Waveguides Using A Silver-Sodium Ion Exchange, V P. Raghavan Jan 1989

Planar Optical Waveguides Using A Silver-Sodium Ion Exchange, V P. Raghavan

Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference

A planar optical waveguide fabrication is reported using a silver-sodium, electric field enhanced, Al thin film masked, ion exchange process. In this study, silver atoms from the thin film replace the sodium ions in soda-lime glass, resulting in a higher index of refraction. It should be noted that soda lime glass was used as a substrate even though it varies in composition, contains metallic impurities and is generally not of optical quality. Problems related with sterling silver and design width are discussed. A better understanding of requirements for coupling light into the waveguide, edge polishing, index profiling, focusing of the …

Nmos Standard Cell Library, Marco Rivero

Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference

A set of standard nMOS cells was designed following the MOSIS lambda-based design rules, with a lambda of 2.0 microns. The nMOS process was modeled using SUPREM II, and each of the cells was simulated in SPICE. The cells, an inverter, two, three, and four input NANDs and NORs, NAND and NOR RS flip-flops, a 2-bit Multiplexer, and a 2-bit Demultiplexer/Decoder, were designed with ICE, an in house CAD tool.

Contamination In Rit Processing, Daniel C. Shire Jan 1989

Contamination In Rit Processing, Daniel C. Shire

Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference

Contamination during processing in RIT’S cleanroom facility is a leading cause in the failure of fabricated devices and circuits. Detection of these contaminants is possible using an ESTEK WIS-600 surface inspection system. Before and after particle counts were taken using this system when processing wafers in many common RIT procedures. It was found that contamination levels were significant in most areas, and cleaning procedures were useful only to remove large particles.

Plasma Damage To Nmos Capacitors, Matthew J. Strong Jan 1989

Plasma Damage To Nmos Capacitors, Matthew J. Strong

Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference

High frequency C-V curves were taken of NMOS capacitors to determine the effect that a RF oxygen plasma has on the underlying thin gate oxide. This plasma was used to remove a positive photoresist. The C-V curves show a threshold voltage shift of 3.75 volts with respect to the undamaged capacitors. The C-V curves also show that the thinner were more affected than the thicker oxides.

Investigation Of Locos Process Using Nitrogen Implantation, Joseph W. Walters Jan 1989

Investigation Of Locos Process Using Nitrogen Implantation, Joseph W. Walters

Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference

A localized oxidation of silicon (LOCOS) process was investigated using nitrogen ion implantation. The doses of 2E12, 2E13, 2E14, and 1E15 atoms/cm2 were implanted through a photoresist mask using the Varian/Extrion 40-100 ion implanter. The results show the initial formation of a LOCOS oxidation. The localized image faded on extended oxidation which indicates the implanted region did not adequately inhibit the diffusion of oxygen.

Ion Implantation To Adjust Nmos Threshold Voltages, Matthew A. Wickham Jan 1989

Ion Implantation To Adjust Nmos Threshold Voltages, Matthew A. Wickham

Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference

NMOS processes require a variety of threshold voltages for differing applications. For this experiment, the threshold voltages of NMOS devices were altered by a using several different ion implant doses (none, 1, 2, 4, and 8e12/cm2) of boron. This shifted the threshold voltage in good agreement with literature values [1].

Integrated Hall Effect Sensor, William H. Wilkinson Jan 1989

Integrated Hall Effect Sensor, William H. Wilkinson

Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference

Experiments relevant to the development an integrated Hall effect sensor have been performed. Carrier concentrations calculated from the Hall voltage generated in samples of bulk silicon did not agree veil with values measured by tour point probe or Van der Pauw techniques. However, the relationship between Hall voltage and magnetic field was highly linear and should produce a well behaved sensor. A sensor design has been proposed, but not fabricated.

Review Of Radial Dose Measurement Technique And Data, Matesh N. Varma Jan 1989

Review Of Radial Dose Measurement Technique And Data, Matesh N. Varma

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Radial dose is the average energy deposited in a short length of cylindrical shell formed between radii r and r + dr, per unit mass. Here, r is the distance perpendicular to the trajectory of an incident charged particle. Radial dose profiles as a function of radial distance for charged particles have been used to interpret radiobiological data. This article reviews the technique for measuring radial dose distributions and the available data.

Integrating Scheduling And Control Functions In Computer Integrated Manufacturing Using Artificial Intelligence, Luis Carlos Rabelo, Sema E. Alptekin

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

Proper integration of scheduling and control in Flexible Manufacturing Systems will make available the required level of decision-making capacity to provide a flexibly-automated, efficient, and quality manufacturing process. To achieve this level of integration, the developments in computer technology and sophisticated techniques of artificial intelligence (AI) should be applied to such FMS functions as scheduling. In this paper, we present an Intelligent Scheduling System for FMS under development that makes use of the integration of two AI technologies. These two AI technologies — Neural Networks and Expert Systems — provide the intelligence that the scheduling function requires in order to …

Mobile Deployable Bases And Ports: A Study For Interim Requirements, William Glenn Moore Jan 1989

Mobile Deployable Bases And Ports: A Study For Interim Requirements, William Glenn Moore

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Logistics is an age old problem that has been the key to the greatest victories and defeats in history. Maritime support of wartime land campaigns as well as conflicts at sea, has been the answer to that problem even as far back in history as the ancient Greek Empire. Throughout the ages however the lesson that seems to be learned and relearned, the hard way, is that of logistic support. Today the United States is faced with what, to some seems to be an overwhelming problem in logistic support overseas, particularly in the maritime transportation and support arena. The U.S. …

Symmetric Self-Electro-Optic Effect Device: Optical Set-Reset Latch, Differential Logic Gate, And Differential Modulator/Detector, Anthony L. Lentine, Harvard S. Hinton, David A. B. Miller, Jill E. Henry, J. E. Cunningham, Leo M. F. Chirovsky Jan 1989

Symmetric Self-Electro-Optic Effect Device: Optical Set-Reset Latch, Differential Logic Gate, And Differential Modulator/Detector, Anthony L. Lentine, Harvard S. Hinton, David A. B. Miller, Jill E. Henry, J. E. Cunningham, Leo M. F. Chirovsky

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The symmetric self-electrooptic-effect device (S-SEED), a structure consisting of two p-i-n diodes electrically connected in series and acting as an optically bistable set-reset latch, is discussed. Applications and extensions of this device are also discussed. The devices do not require the critical biasing that is common to most optically bistable devices and thus is more useful for system applications. They have been optically cascaded in a photonic ring counter and have been used to perform different NOR, OR, NAND, and AND logic functions. Using the same device, a differential modulator that generates a set of complementary output beams with a …

Viscous Cross-Waves: An Analytical Treatment, Andrew J. Bernoff, L. P. Kwok, Seth Lichter Jan 1989

Viscous Cross-Waves: An Analytical Treatment, Andrew J. Bernoff, L. P. Kwok, Seth Lichter

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Viscous effects on the excitation of cross‐waves in a semi‐infinite box of finite depth and width are considered. A formalism using matched asymptotic expansions and an improved method of computing the solvability condition is used to derive the relative contributions of the free‐surface, sidewall, bottom, and wavemaker viscous boundary layers. This analysis yields an expression for the damping coefficient previously incorporated on heuristic grounds. In addition, three new contributions are found: a viscous detuning of the resonant frequency, a slow spatial variation in the coupling to the progressive wave, and a viscous correction to the wavemaker boundary condition. The wavemaker …

A theoretical model with no adjustable parameters is presented to evaluate the strand break yields for incident electrons between 100 eV and 1 MeV. Indirect mechanisms as well as direct mechanisms are included for the production of strand breaks. The model includes the following features: (i) multiple scattering of low energy electrons; (ii) decay of hydroxyl radicals in an aqueous solution containing Tris buffer; (iii) Monte Carlo simulation of the motion of hydroxyl radicals for interaction with the DNA sites; and (iv) stochastic aspects of the direct ionization on the DNA sites and the use of oscillator strength of a …

The Katz Cell-Survival Model And Beams Of Heavy Charged Particles, Stanley B. Curtis Jan 1989

The Katz Cell-Survival Model And Beams Of Heavy Charged Particles, Stanley B. Curtis

United States Department of Energy: Publications

In this paper, we describe how the Katz cell-survival model has been used to predict survival along the central axis of the dose vs depth curve of beams of heavy charged particles. Unmodified beams with sharp Bragg peaks as well as ridge-filter-modulated beams with spread Bragg peaks have been studied. The analysis in terms of this model leads to the definition of two coefficients, "ion kill" and "gamma kill", which characterize the radiation quality of the beams. In this way, the relative importance of the primary lind secondary (fragmentation) contributions can be assessed easily.

Setting the model parameter m equal …

Physical Aspects Of Charged Particle Track Structure, R. H. Ritchie, R. N. Hamm, J. E. Turner, H. A. Wright, J. C. Ashley, G. J. Banks

United States Department of Energy: Publications

A plasmon generated by a swift charged particle constitutes a coherent excitation about the particle track. We discuss the physics of the plasmon in condensed matter and its effects on electron transport in liquid water. Criteria for the existence of the plasmon III a given substance, Its characteristics when generated by a swift charged particle, its representation in impact parameter space, and its decay into localized excitations are described. We describe how plasmon excitation and decay are implemented in our Monte Carlo code, OREC, and how track structure calculations are affected by this mode.

Subsurface Transport Of Contaminants, John E. Mccarthy, John M. Zachara Jan 1989

Subsurface Transport Of Contaminants, John E. Mccarthy, John M. Zachara

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Contaminants originating from human activities have entered the subsurface environment through waste disposal practices, spills, and land application of chemicals. The establishment of effective disposal and isolation procedures for chemical wastes, the protection of public health, and the amelioration of subsurface contamination rely on the ability to predict the velocity at which contaminants move through the vadose (unsaturated) and saturated zones. However, attempts to describe and predict contaminant transport cannot succeed if major pathways and mechanisms for transport are not defined.

Most approaches to describing and predicting the movement of contaminants treat groundwater as a two-phase system in which contaminants …

Improved Fertilizing Practices On The Peel-Harvey Catchment, P T. Arkell Jan 1989

Improved Fertilizing Practices On The Peel-Harvey Catchment, P T. Arkell

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Broad-acre farmers in the Peel-Harvey catchment have met a challange and achieved a great deal since the fertilizer extension programme started in 1983.

The main objective of the extension programme has been to ensure that every year three-quarters of the farmers make economically and technically sound fertilizer decisions, thus causing a minimum amount of phosphorus to enter the waterways of the Peel-Harvey estuarine system.

Evaluation Of Algrow As A Binder In Hydromulch And Preliminary Determination Of The Influence Of Algrow On Germination And Seedling Growth, C. Earl Israelsen, Gilberto Urroz, Ronald V. Canfield

Reports

Introduction: The application of mulch during or immediately following seeding provides the minimum following advantages: energy dissipation of falling raindrops which decreases or eliminates erosion, prevention of surface-soil crusting, decreased water loss, and surface temperature modification. To better hold mulch in place, chemical binders are addd to it during munufacture or just before it is applied to the soil. Sometimes a binder is applied as an oversptray after the mulch is in place. (This overspray is generally referred to as a tackifier.) Algea Produkter A/S, Drammen, Norway, produces a product called ALGROW which may habe utility as a mulch binder …
