The Pessimism Behind Optimistic Simulation, George Varghese, Roger D. Chamberlain, William E. Weihl
The Pessimism Behind Optimistic Simulation, George Varghese, Roger D. Chamberlain, William E. Weihl
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
In this paper we make an analogy between the time that storage must be maintained in an optimistic simulation and the blocking time in a conservative simulation. By exploring this analogy, we design two new Global Virtual Time (GVT) protocols for Time Warp systems. The first simple protocol is based on the null message scheme proposed for clock advancement in some conservative approaches; this yields what we call Local Guaranteed Time. Our main contribution is a second new protocol that is inspired by Misra's circulating marker scheme for deadlock recovery in conservative simulations, and appears to have advantages over previous …
Dna Mapping Algorithms: Synchronized Double Digest Mapping, Jim Daues, Will Gillett
Dna Mapping Algorithms: Synchronized Double Digest Mapping, Jim Daues, Will Gillett
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
A technique called Synchronized Double Digest Mapping (SDDM) is presented; it combines classical Double Digest Mapping (DDM) and Multiple-Restriction-Enzyme Mapping (MREM). Classical DDM is a technique for determining the order of restriction fragments in a clone given three digestions of the clone: a digestion by enzyme1, a digestion by enzyme2, and a digestion by enzyme1 and enzyme2 combined. All algorithms for applying this technique are exponential (in the number of fragments present in the clone) in nature. MREM is an extension of classical high-resolution restriction-fragment mapping of a YAC or a genome, in which the overlaps among a set of …

Sputter Deposition And Thallination Of Ti-Ba-Ca-Cu-O Superconducting Thin Films, T. H. Dhayagude, S. S. Ang, W. D. Brown
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Thallination techniques used for the fabrication of sputter-deposited TI2Ba2CaCu 2Ox and TI2Ba2Ca2Cu3Ox superconducting thin films were investigated. Differences in elemental composition of precursor Ba-Ca-Cu-O sputtering targets were found to yield different superconducting phases. Thallination conditions which yielded transition temperatures as high as 122 K for samples annealed in air are described. Finally, reactive ion etching of films using a mixture of chlorine and argon gases is discussed.

Paschen's Law For A Hollow Cathode Discharge, H. Eichhorn, K. H. Schoenbach, T. Tessnow
Bioelectrics Publications
An expression for the breakdown voltage of a one‐dimensional hollow cathode discharge has been derived. The breakdown condition which corresponds to Paschen’s law contains, in addition to the first Townsend coefficient, and the secondary electron emission coefficient two parameters which characterize the reflecting action of the electric field and the lifetime of the electrons in the discharge. The breakdown voltage for a hollow cathode discharge in helium was calculated and compared to that of a glow discharge operating under similar conditions.

Electrical conductivity and the Seebeck coefficient of compositions in the system Y1-yCayMnO3 and La1-yCayMnO3 were studied to determine the mechanism of electrical transport and defect structure. Electrical conduction appeared to occur via a small polaron hopping mechanism for compositions with 0.30 ≤ y ≤ 0.80. The Seebeck coefficient data did not support the assumption that Mn is present in Cadoped Mn perovskites only in the +3 and +4 valence states. A new defect model was developed which includes the thermally excited disproportion of Mn3+ and Mn4+ pairs. The …
The Development Of A Solar Radiation Extinction Correction For Satellite Data, Widad I. Mohamed
The Development Of A Solar Radiation Extinction Correction For Satellite Data, Widad I. Mohamed
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The main objectives of this thesis are the following: 1) Remove the haze using water surfaces in Landsat satellite imagery of the visible and near-infrared regions for their properties of high absorption of solar radiation and weak reflection of it. The scattered solar radiation is most obvious in dark weakly reflecting regions such as water. The haze removal technique depends on subtraction of scattered light from picture elements within the satellite imagery. 2) Derive a formula and techniques for a given image to correct for extinction by transforming the observed intensity of the signal transmitted to the Landsat detector to …

All-Optical Timing Extraction With Frequency Division Using A Twin-Section Laser Diode, Gerald Farrell, Paul Phelan, Joe Hegarty, J. Shields
Articles
All-optical timing extraction from a coded line signal with division of the extracted clock frequency is demonstrated using a single twin-section self-pulsating laser diode. Either the bit-rate clock or a submultiple of the bit-rate clock can be extracted, depending only on the DC biases applied to the self-pulsating laser diode. Timing extraction is carried out for the first time without optical injection locking of the self-pulsating laser diode by the optical data source

Soxhlet extractions were performed on the eight Argonne Premium coals using pyridine purged with argon and followed by a novel washing procedure to remove the pyridine. Mass closure (extracts plus residues) on duplicate experiments accounted for 94-96% of the original coal, repeatable to within 2%. Chemical structural features determined from 13C NMR analyses of the extracts and residues showed more attachments per aromatic cluster for the residues, indicating a greater degree of covalent bonding in the residue than in the extract. 1H NMR analysis of the extracts showed a gradual increase in the hydrogen aromaticity with rank, along …

NASA Langley Research Center has developed a library that allows Intel NX message passing codes to be executed under the more popular and widely supported Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM) message passing library. PVM was developed at Oak Ridge National Labs and has become the defacto standard for message passing. This library will allow the many programs that were developed on the Intel iPSC/860 or Intel Paragon in a Single Program Multiple Data (SPMD) design to be ported to the numerous architectures that PVM (version 3.2) supports. Also, the library adds global operations capability to PVM. A familiarity with Intel NX …

A Comparison Of Queueing, Cluster And Distributed Computing Systems, Joseph A. Kaplan, Michael L. Nelson
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Using workstation clusters for distributed computing has become popular with the proliferation of inexpensive, powerful workstations. Workstation clusters offer both a cost effective alternative to batch processing and an easy entry into parallel computing. However, a number of workstations on a network does not constitute a cluster. Cluster management software is necessary to harness the collective computing power. A variety of cluster management and queuing systems are compared: Distributed Queueing Systems (DQS), Condor, Load Leveler, Load Balancer, Load Sharing Facility (LSF - formerly Utopia), Distributed Job Manager (DJM), Computing in Distributed Networked Environments (CODINE), and NQS/Exec. The systems differ in …

A Study Of Fatigue Failure In Superalloys Using Positron Annihilation, D. Hoeckelman, Hollis P. Leighly
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This study shows there are significant changes occurring in the open volume defect concentration during fatigue cycling as measured by the S parameter. These changes are dependent upon the stress ratio, R = σmin/σmax, the maximum stress, σmax, and the number of fatigue cycles. The decline in the S parameter is due to the elimination of the residual vacancies. This decline is followed by an increase due to the generation of dislocations and the formation of small microcracks. This is followed by a decline in the S parameter due to growth of the microcracks ultimately leading to failure. Copyright © …

Electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, and thermogravimetric behavior of compositions in the systems Y1-yCayMnO3 and Y1-yCayMnO3 were studied as functions of temperature and ambient oxygen activity in order to determine the mechanism of electrical transport and defect structure. Compositions in Y1-yCayMnO3 exhibited very slight oxygen activity-dependent behavior as the ambient oxygen activity was reduced. A defect model which includes the thermally excited disproportionation of Mn3+ into Mn2+ and Mn4+ pairs was applied to the oxygen-activity-dependent data for La0.80Ca0.20MnO3 …

The low-cycle and high-cycle fatigue behavior and cyclic response of naturally aged and artificially aged 2219/TiC/15p and unreinforced 2219 Al were investigated utilizing plastic strain-controlled and stress-controlled testing. The cyclic response of both the reinforced and un-reinforced materials was similar for all plastic strain amplitudes tested except that the saturation stress level for the composite was always greater than that of the unreinforced material. The cyclic response of the naturally aged materials exhibited cyclic hardening and, in some cases, cyclic softening, while the cyclic response for the artificially aged materials showed no evidence of either cyclic hardening or softening. Pump And Signal Cross Saturation In Cw Dye Lasers, Lee W. Casperson, A. C. Wilson, W. J. Sandle
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
It is well known that the signal output intensity from a dye laser oscillator depends directly on the pump intensity. The opposite effect, the dependence of the transmitted pump intensity on the signal intensity, is studied in detail. The theoretical results are compared with experimental data obtained using an argon‐laser‐pumped rhodamine 6G dye laser.

A semiclassical model is presented for ultrashort‐pulse dye laser amplifiers. The model permits a discussion of important aspects of short‐pulse amplification such as pulse shape, pulse energy, and gain saturation. Coherence effects are found to be important in characterizing the evolution of amplified pulses in the subpicosecond and femtosecond regimes. The results are compared with those obtained using the corresponding rate equation model.

In order to explore and develop technology required for the magnetic suspension of objects over large ranges of orientation, a small-scale laboratory system, the large-angle magnetic suspension test fixture (LAMSTF) has been constructed at NASA Langley Research Center. This apparatus falls into the category of large-gap, actively stabilized magnetic levitation systems. The hardware comprises five conventional electromagnets in a circular arrangement, each driven from a separate bipolar power amplifier. Electromagnet currents are commanded by a digital control system, implemented on a microcomputer, which in turn derives the position and attitude of the suspended element from an infrared optical system.
