Investigation Of Hole Caving Due To Vibrations, W. N. Houston, S. L. Houston, K. D. Walsh Jun 1993

Investigation Of Hole Caving Due To Vibrations, W. N. Houston, S. L. Houston, K. D. Walsh

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Foundations for a power plant were constructed by drilling holes in cemented sand for 36" piers. The boreholes in the cemented sand did not cave. A major design change required the demolition of the original piers and pile caps with large hoe rams and the drilling of new 36" boreholes in the same location. The new drilling contractor experienced widespread caving, which he was unable to remedy. The authors first investigated the possibility that the second contractor used inferior equipment or techniques. Then the authors investigated the possibility that a loss in soil cohesion occurred due to the vibrations from …

Structural And Functional Distress Due To Slag Expansion, E. M. Morales Jun 1993

Structural And Functional Distress Due To Slag Expansion, E. M. Morales

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Cracking and heaving of a Single Storey R.C. Building was initially perceived as settlement. This error led to unnecessary and costly remedial measures such as Piling for the Phase ll Building which further aggravated the problem. The heaving was caused by a seemingly innocent decision during the construction stage to use Slag from a steel mill as the base course material. This Slag reacted with the highly corrosive groundwater which caused heaving of the Building and discomfort and morale problems to the Building occupants. Careful engineering study and investigation resulted in a very simple solution which saved the Building from …

Petroleum hydrocarbon and metal affected soil is incorporated with an asphalt emulsion and aggregate to produce a range of cold-mix asphalt product that fulfills the requirements of a variety of end uses. This viable and creative use which is within the intent …

Case Histories Of Compacted Clay Liners And Covers For Waste Disposal Facilities, David E. Daniel Jun 1993

Case Histories Of Compacted Clay Liners And Covers For Waste Disposal Facilities, David E. Daniel

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Compacted clay liners and covers are widely used in waste containment units. Case histories in three categories are presented: (1) case histories illustrating compaction, construction, and quality assurance difficulties; (2) case histories involving field hydraulic conductivity testing of large-scale test pads; and (3) case histories involving final cover systems. The case histories illustrate that: (1) compaction criteria should be chosen carefully and with consideration given to how the compaction will be controlled in the field; (2) regulatory roadblocks may defeat sound technical approaches in terms of developing compaction criteria; (3) one can follow ASTM procedures and still get into difficulty …

Case History Of A Bridge Foundation, T. Z. Rao Jun 1993

Case History Of A Bridge Foundation, T. Z. Rao

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

A reinforcement open caisson of a bridge was constructed on a sand island. Its constructing characteristic couldn't been foreseen and were calculated conventionally. Besides, there were some mistaken methods in the constructing. Therefore the open caisson broke up to become 4 blocks in the construction. The largest width in these cracks was 80 cm. Investigation and analysis having been done, the causes of the failure were found. Some repairing methods, such as opposite cutting edge, reinforcement hoop, and so on, adopted. Correct excavation was carried out. The open caisson finally sunk to the rock. The treatment was successful.

A Case History Of Raft Foundation Behavior For A Large-Scaled Building Complex, M. Aoki, M. Maruoka, N. Sahasi, Y. Okamura, Y. Ikuta Jun 1993

A Case History Of Raft Foundation Behavior For A Large-Scaled Building Complex, M. Aoki, M. Maruoka, N. Sahasi, Y. Okamura, Y. Ikuta

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

This paper describes the field observation of settlement of a raft foundation for a large scale building complex in Nagoya city in Japan. The complex consists of a 28 story hotel, a 15 story office building and a low-storied banquet hall in the middle all of which are supported on a single 80 m square basement on raft foundation. Since the load on the foundation is non-uniform, the differential settlement of the foundation was investigated analytically, taking into consideration the interaction between the ground and the raft. To confirm the validity of the design, measurements were conducted for about 2 …

Damages To A Five-Storied Building Founded Over Peat Layer, M. Gryczmański, J. Sekowski Jun 1993

Damages To A Five-Storied Building Founded Over Peat Layer, M. Gryczmański, J. Sekowski

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

In the paper is presented a history of the long-term process of deformations and damages to a five-storied apartment building in Gliwice, one located over a thick lens of a young, very weak peat deposit. The evolution of deformations is defined by changes in time of representative foundation movement components (the angular distortion, deflection ratio, etc.). Relationships given and analysed in the paper are based on the results of settlement monitoring preformed since 1970, and failure escalation descriptions make use of crack documentations included in the expert opinions. The case history also comprises not quite efficient attempts of object protection. …

Evaluation Of Bearing Capacity Of Friction Pile Based On Uncertainty Of Soil Properties, H. Ochiai, K. Matsui, S. Adachi Jun 1993

Evaluation Of Bearing Capacity Of Friction Pile Based On Uncertainty Of Soil Properties, H. Ochiai, K. Matsui, S. Adachi

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The authors have proposed a method for evaluation of vertical bearing capacity of bored friction pile which might be capable to reflect the uncertainty of soil properties on the evaluation. The rationality of the method is examined from the application to the bridge design in this paper. A vertical bearing capacity of pile foundation is practically estimated by expressions with N-value, in which there are two kinds of uncertainties which depend on the N-values at the estimation points and the coefficient of the bearing capacity expressions. It is, therefore, necessary to improve the accuracy in estimating the bearing capacity that …

Failure Of Buildings Founded On Fills, Iqbal H. Khan, S. M. A. Kazimi Jun 1993

Failure Of Buildings Founded On Fills, Iqbal H. Khan, S. M. A. Kazimi

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

A number of cases have come to light in Delhi recently where partial or total failure of buildings has occurred. Two cases of failures due to excessive settlement are discussed. The nature of distress and the geotechnical factors leading to failures were investigated. It was found that in both cases the foundations were resting on fills, resulting in excessive settlement. Remedial measures were considered and in one case, these have been successfully implemented. A large number of structures were thus rehabilitated.

Field Study Of Foundation Of Extension Project To Tongji University Library In Shanghai, J. G. Dong, Y. P. Qian, G. Lu, D. Y. Huang

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The extended building to Tongji University Library is composed of two cantilever beam structure towers with height of 50 m and 11 floor. In order not to affect the normal serviceability of the original library the large and deep compensated box foundation is adopted and a diaphragm wall close against box is employed as an anti-permeability veneering structure. Practice in this extension project has shown that compensated foundation is one kind of the best foundations for tall buildings in the areas with dense buildings in Shanghai. This paper studies in detail the distribution of contact pressure beneath box foundation. It …

Foundation Problems In A Developing City, K. R. Saxena, A. S. R. Swamy, R. S. Murthy Jun 1993

Foundation Problems In A Developing City, K. R. Saxena, A. S. R. Swamy, R. S. Murthy

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Foundation problems are normally associated with type of sub strata, soil, rock or any other foreign material' met with, and/or if choice of foundation is not compatible with them. In developing cities, the development stress is on highly developed congested areas, limiting the sub soil investigation, and plans to have high rise buildings, requiring deep foundations and sometimes execution of these posing site problems. The collapse of a multi-storeyed structure caused, according to geotechnical engineers due to overlooking the existence of a drain and a few cases of "composite" foundations are described.

Foundation Selection And Construction Performance - Clark Bridge Replacement, D. E. Daniels, V. A. Modeer, M. C. Lamie Jun 1993

Foundation Selection And Construction Performance - Clark Bridge Replacement, D. E. Daniels, V. A. Modeer, M. C. Lamie

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The paper describes the foundation investigation for the Clark Bridge Replacement, which spans the Mississippi River at Alton, Illinois. The subsurface investigation and the design considerations leading to the foundation piling selection are detailed. The construction performances of the selected H-piles and composite piles are described, including the use of pre-construction wave equation analyses to predict the performance of proposed pile hammers, and the use of the dynamic pile driving analyzer during construction to limit driving stresses and prevent pile damage.

Foundations On Salt Bearing Soils Of Jizan, M. N. Fatani, A. M. Khan Jun 1993

Foundations On Salt Bearing Soils Of Jizan, M. N. Fatani, A. M. Khan

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Jizan city is located on a salt dome surrounded by low-lying flat terrain consisting of silty-sandy soils. Being on the sea-shore, water immigrates to the surface leaving a salt crust on the top surface, which is known as 'Sabkha' soil. This salt bearing (saline) soil and the salt dome affected the foundation performance in the area. Buildings are experiencing foundation problems as a result of the low bearing capacity of the 'Sabkha' soil and the dissolution of the salt rock underneath the footings of the low-rise buildings, causing tilting of such structures. This paper would present the geotechnical aspects of …

Geocomposites For Foundation Uplift Pressure Control In Impermeable Soils, J. C. Chang, J. Y. Wu Jun 1993

Geocomposites For Foundation Uplift Pressure Control In Impermeable Soils, J. C. Chang, J. Y. Wu

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Mat foundations constructed in impermeable soils with a high groundwater table will experience a substantially high buoyancy force due to hydrostatic pressure. Conventional solutions to this problem are to increase the structural weight or install piles or anchors to counterbalance the uplift. These methods are costly, inefficient, and time-consuming. This paper presents a case study to show an innovated approach by using geocomposites to cope with the uplift in impermeable soils. Uplift pressure relief system consisted of geosynthetic materials was installed for a 14- story office and apartment building. The raft foundation was built at 50 feet below ground surface. …

Ground Movements And Pore Pressure Variation Caused By Epb Shield Tunneling - Shanghai (China) Sewage Tunnel, K. M. Lee, X. Yi, R. K. Rowe Jun 1993

Ground Movements And Pore Pressure Variation Caused By Epb Shield Tunneling - Shanghai (China) Sewage Tunnel, K. M. Lee, X. Yi, R. K. Rowe

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The observed pore pressures and deformations induced by an earth balance shield used to construct the Furongjiang sewer tunnel in soft saturated ground in Shanghai, China, are briefly described. Continuous records of immediate surface settlements and ground movements were obtained as the tunnel face approaching and moving away from the observation points. A correlation between resulting heave/settlements and driving force is observed. A finite element technique for predicting these pore pressures and deformations is developed. A comparison is then made between numerical results and the results of field measurements and it is shown that there is encouraging agreement between the …
