On The Role Of Perceived Safety Concerns On Public Acceptance Behavior Of Autonomous Vehicles, Fatemeh Nazari, Mohamadhossein Noruzoliaee, The University Of Texas Rio Grande Valley
Civil Engineering Faculty Publications
Despite maturing road tests and limited commercial mobility services with autonomous vehicles (AVs), the existing behavioral research, surveys, and polls suggest that, to date, the public is largely reluctant or neutral to accept this emerging technology due to potential lurking failures and malfunctions in unexpected weather/road conditions and cyber-attacks. The persistence of this demand landscape for AVs could curb the promising economic, societal, and environmental benefits of prevalent autonomous mobility. Proactive policy interventions are thus much needed early on to provide impetus for AV acceptance, which should be informed by an in-depth understanding of the AV acceptance behavior of the …

Enhancing Traffic Safety And Connectivity: A Data-Driven Multi-Step-Ahead Vehicle Headway Prediction Leveraging High-Resolution Vehicular Trajectories, Mohamadhossein Noruzoliaee, Fatemeh Nazari, The University Of Texas Rio Grande Valley
Civil Engineering Faculty Publications
Vehicle headway, defined as the time elapsed between two successive vehicles passing a roadway point, is a key mesoscopic-scale measure in traffic flow theory with safety-critical transportation applications, such as preemptive collision avoidance warning systems as well as connected and autonomous vehicle (CAV) platoon control. Hence, it is crucial to accurately predict vehicle headway over sufficiently long future horizons (i.e., multi-step-ahead prediction) to be applicable for downstream safety-critical applications. This is a challenging task due to several random factors influencing headway, including inter- and intra-driver heterogeneity, asymmetric car-following driving behavior, and vehicle heterogeneity under mixed traffic of different vehicle classes. …

Thermal Oxidative Degradation Of Polystyrene Plastics Used For Food Packaging During Incomplete Waste Incineration, Maycee Hurd
Civil Engineering ETDs
We identified the physical and chemical degradation of polystyrene (PS) plastic used for food packaging after thermal oxidative weathering. Open waste incineration is a widely used waste management practice in isolated and underserved communities. However, the generation of partially incinerated plastics and microplastics (MPs) from this practice is overlooked. Near surface XPS C 1s high resolution analyses show an increase in the intensity of peaks greater than 285 eV corresponding to C/O bonds after burning of PS. Bulk analyses using ATR-FTIR show that thermal oxidation decreased the alkene (3040-3000 cm-1) and alkane (3000-2850 cm-1) C-H stretch signals suggesting PS chain …

The Role Of Sensing Modalities In Shaping Collective Motion And Group Behavior, Poorendra P. Ramlall
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Collective behavior refers to the coordinated movements that emerge from simple interactions between individuals within a group. Traditionally, researchers have modeled these interactions assuming individuals can sense their surroundings in all directions, like having eyes all around their heads. While this is a useful simplification, it does not capture the diverse ways animals actually sense the world. In this thesis, we take inspiration from the natural world, particularly from animals like bats and dolphins that use a combination of hearing and sight to navigate their environments. We explore how combining these sensory cues in a three-dimensional space affects the way …

Evolution Of Residual Stress, Crystal Orientation, And Texture On Preheating Weld Treatment Of Low Carbon Steel Astm A572 Grade 42, Suratno Adi Saputro, Andoko Andoko, Poppy Puspitasari
Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science and Technology (JMEST)
Preheating is one type of heat treatment on the material prior to starting the welding process by increasing the temperature of the material. It is used to reduce the cooling rate during the welding processes to minimize the risk of residual stress and cracking during welding. Besides the benefits of welding, it also has a negative impact, especially on the integrity of the material, because the heating process at high temperatures will cause residual stress, which will affect the mechanical properties, chemical composition, and microstructure of the material, especially on Heat Affected Zone (HAZ). This study aims to analyze the …

Renewable biomass is projected to be a future fuel source. Spirulina platensis (SP) has numerous advantages compared to other biomass, and it is considered 3rd generation biomass that does not interfere with food and land usage and has a relatively low main decomposition temperature at 325.7℃. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was conducted to observe SP kinetics parameters, especially activation energy. Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS), Ozawa-Flynn-Wall (OFW), and Starink iso-conversional methods reveal that SP has an activation energy of 152.33, 154.56, and …

Ship collisions are a phenomenon that often occurs in maritime transportation. One part of the ship that often experiences damage is the ship's wall (hull). This research aims to analyze and compare deformation patterns, stress distribution, and energy absorption in three wall models, single wall, double wall, and double wall, with the addition of infill structures. The infill structure used Polylactic Acid (PLA) polymer material because it provided convenience in the manufacturing process, while the walls of the test model used Aluminum 6063 material. The test model was developed by carrying out the design process using CAD software. Furthermore, a …
