Bio-Inspired Visual Intelligence: Improving Efficiency And Robustness Through Foveal-Peripheral Sampling And Learned Saccades, Jiayang Liu Jun 2026

Bio-Inspired Visual Intelligence: Improving Efficiency And Robustness Through Foveal-Peripheral Sampling And Learned Saccades, Jiayang Liu

Dissertations - ALL

Deep neural networks have achieved state-of-the-art performance across a wide range of computer vision tasks, yet their deployment in real-world and safety-critical domains remains limited by two major challenges: vulnerability to adversarial perturbations and high computational cost. While adversarial training can improve robustness under certain threat models, it is computationally expensive and often generalizes poorly to black-box or transferable attacks. At the same time, conventional vision pipelines process uniformly sampled high-resolution images, introducing substantial data redundancy, latency, and energy overhead. In contrast, the human visual system achieves efficient and robust perception through space-variant foveal-peripheral sampling, attention-guided saccadic eye movements, and …

Agentic Ai-Enabled Physics-Informed Machine Learning Framework For Intelligent Building Modeling, Control, And Automation, Zixin Jiang Jun 2026

Agentic Ai-Enabled Physics-Informed Machine Learning Framework For Intelligent Building Modeling, Control, And Automation, Zixin Jiang

Dissertations - ALL

Buildings account for a significant share of global energy consumption, and meeting the 2050 net-zero decarbonization targets requires retrofitting approximately 10,000 buildings per day in the United States alone. However, current human-centered workflows for building modeling, simulation, control, and operation remain too slow and labor-intensive to support deployment at this scale. This dissertation proposes an integrated two-pillar framework consisting of a physics-informed machine learning framework for integrated building modeling, control, and simulation, and a multi-agent agentic AI framework for automating building energy engineering workflows built on top of that foundation. The first pillar introduces a Physics-Informed Modularized Neural Network (PI-ModNN) …

(R2142) Queueing System With Batched Services, Server-Controlled Re-Service, Set-Up Time And Multiple Vacation, S. Karpagam, N. Aarthy, B. Somasundaram Jun 2026

(R2142) Queueing System With Batched Services, Server-Controlled Re-Service, Set-Up Time And Multiple Vacation, S. Karpagam, N. Aarthy, B. Somasundaram

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

To analyze a bulk queueing system with server-controlled admission for reservice, low-batch service, multiple vacation and set-up time. The study explores how the server dynamically adjusts between low-batch and bulk services based on the queue size. After completing a bulk service, the departing batch may request reservice with a certain probability. However, accepting the request is not mandatory, and the server admits it with some probability. Whenever the queue becomes empty, whether after reservicing, completing service with no reservice request, or ending the low-batch service, the server enters a random-length vacation. If the queue still has less than ‘a’ customers …

(R2140) Verifying The Proper Efficiency In Multi-Objective Problems, Javad Bavali, Hadi Basirzadeh Jun 2026

(R2140) Verifying The Proper Efficiency In Multi-Objective Problems, Javad Bavali, Hadi Basirzadeh

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Over the past decade, numerous approaches have been put forward to address multi-objective optimization problems-focusing on approximating proper efficient solutions instead of the efficient solutions. These methods are important because, according to Geoffrion’s conjecture, proper non-dominated solutions constitute a dense subset of the non-dominated solution set. In the current study, first, using the definition of Kuhn-Tucker’s proper efficiency, we present a linear subproblem that investigates the proper efficiency of a randomly selected feasible point. Additionally, the relationship between the different types of solutions to this sub-problem and the proper efficient solutions of the main problem has been analyzed. Next, we …

(R2187) Analysis Of Neurological Impairments In Hospitalized Patients Using Cubic Neutrosophic Sets, B. Anitha, M. Lavanya

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This study introduces an MCDM-based framework for identifying neurological diseases in hospitalized patients using symptom-based evaluations. A team of interns, guided by the chief doctor, was responsible for determining each patient’s precise condition from the presented neurological symptoms. To enhance diagnostic accuracy, the interns employed the TOPSIS and WASPAS methods to assess and rank the potential disease options. The combined analysis yielded a clear identification of the highest ranked disease for every patient, highlighting the effectiveness of these MCDM techniques in supporting clinical decision making.

Long-Term Shoreline Evolution And Anthropogenic Impact: Evidence From 76 Years Of Coastal Change In Mazagón, Spain, M. Fernández-Hernández, M. Pastor, L. Iglesias, R. Castedo, K. S. Sajinkumar

Michigan Tech Publications

The Mazagón coast (Huelva, southwestern Spain) illustrates the strong imprint of anthropogenic interventions on shoreline dynamics. This study evaluates its evolution between 1946 and 2022 by digitizing historical shorelines from aerial photographs and quantifying changes through three complementary indicators: Net Shoreline Movement (NSM), End Point Rate (EPR), and Linear Regression Rate (LRR). Statistical analyses (ANOVA and Tukey’s test) were performed to assess differences between pre- and post-construction phases of the Juan Carlos I breakwater. The results indicate a prevailing erosive trend, with mean retreat rates of − 1.4 m/yr and localized shoreline losses exceeding 100 m. Prior to the breakwater, …

Rapid Synthesis And Processing Of High-Capacity Layered Oxide Cathode Materials For Lithium And Sodium Batteries, Hansheng Li Jun 2026

Rapid Synthesis And Processing Of High-Capacity Layered Oxide Cathode Materials For Lithium And Sodium Batteries, Hansheng Li

Dissertations - ALL

Lithium-Manganese-Rich-Oxide (LMRO) is a type of layered oxide cathode active material with high energy densities of up to 900 - 1,000 Wh kg-1, competitive in capacity-demanding rechargeable lithium batteries. The increased energy density is beneficial for the range and recharging interval of electric vehicles. Based on layered Ni/Mn/Co oxide cathode materials, a high Mn content is chosen for this project as being abundant, while increased Ni concentration trades off thermal stability with specific capacity, while Co is carcinogenic and sourced less sustainably. Lithium content is increased along with Manganese content stoichiometrically as a second phase is introduced. Traditional synthesis routes …

Investigation Of Inlet Turbulence Effects On Mixing Characteristics Of A Jet In Crossflow, Erin Jagger Jun 2026

Investigation Of Inlet Turbulence Effects On Mixing Characteristics Of A Jet In Crossflow, Erin Jagger

Masters Theses

Gas flaring is widely used in the oil and gas industry to dispose of excess waste gas, and improving flare efficiency is critical for reducing emissions. Flare performance depends strongly on turbulent mixing between the flare gas and surrounding crossflow. While previous studies have examined the effects of crossflow velocity and low turbulence levels, the combined effects of crossflow turbulence intensity and integral length scale on mixing remains insufficiently understood.

This study uses a non-reacting jet in crossflow (JICF) configuration to represent the mixing process between the flare and crossflow interaction. Using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations …

Hybrid Patrol–Staging Optimization For Freeway Service Patrols Under Cost Control: A Deterministic Milp With Dynamic Segment Adjustment & Environmental Co-Benefit, Mauricio Micolta Jun 2026

Hybrid Patrol–Staging Optimization For Freeway Service Patrols Under Cost Control: A Deterministic Milp With Dynamic Segment Adjustment & Environmental Co-Benefit, Mauricio Micolta

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Freeway Service Patrol (FSP) programs are central to Traffic Incident Management (TIM), delivering rapid response, clearance, and motorist assistance on high-volume corridors. The prevailing continuous roaming patrol model provides broad coverage but generates substantial non-productive vehicle-miles traveled (VMT), increases responders’ exposure to risk, and treats Service Level Agreement (SLA) compliance as a statistical outcome rather than a fixed operational constraint. Existing literature lacks a framework that simultaneously optimizes corridor segmentation, jointly deploys patrol and staged units across space, time, and direction, and enforces response-time SLA as a binding constraint.

This dissertation introduces the Segmental-Spatio-Temporal Hybrid Service Model (SSTHSM), a two-tier …

Mathematical Modeling And Simulation Of Wheel Hub Stresses Using Finite Element Analysis In Light Military Trainer Aircraft, Alysson Sousa Rabelo, José Aécio Gomes De Sousa, Feliciano José Ricardo Cangue, Luiz Leroy Thomé Vaughan Jun 2026

Mathematical Modeling And Simulation Of Wheel Hub Stresses Using Finite Element Analysis In Light Military Trainer Aircraft, Alysson Sousa Rabelo, José Aécio Gomes De Sousa, Feliciano José Ricardo Cangue, Luiz Leroy Thomé Vaughan

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

The landing gear of modern aircraft accounts for approximately 20% of the structural weight and 5% of the total weight. Among its components, the wheel hub endures particularly high loads during landing, often leading to cracks and porosity associated with casting-induced micro-voids in magnesium and aluminum alloys. Over time, cyclic stresses enlarge these voids, converting them into critical stress concentrators. Differences in alloy properties, such as yield strength, fracture toughness, and corrosion resistance, further influence how cracks propagate, underscoring the importance of rigorous manufacturing methods and regular nondestructive inspections. To investigate these vulnerabilities, stress analyses were performed on a military …

Developing Machine Learning Models For Sorption Of Pharmaceuticals To Soils And Sediments, Eyad Mohammed Al Salem

Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses

The growing environmental presence of pharmaceutically active compounds (PACs) creates a critical need for rapid, cost-effective methods to predict their movement through soils and sediments. Traditional laboratory batch experiments are time-consuming, and previous predictive models often relied on limited data or ignored complex chemical behavior. The primary objective of this thesis is to develop robust machine learning models for predicting the sorption distribution coefficient of PACs. The study aims to determine whether separating data by ionic state improves predictive accuracy and to identify the key physical and chemical factors governing the sorption of PACs onto soils and sediments. A large …

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Studies by Scheltinga et al. (2002) and Scheltinga and Jamieson (2003) provide the most comprehensive analysis and only review of sperm morphology in Narrow-Mouthed Frogs (family Microhylidae). Of the 490+ species known to occur in this anuran family (Vitt and Caldwell 2014), only 3 are distributed in the United States (Powell et al. 2016), and 2 of these occur in Arkansas (Trauth et al. 2004). Surprisingly, sperm studies on only 12 microhylid species have been conducted (Scheltinga and Jamieson 2003), and no sperm studies are available on any North American species.

Enhancing The Barrier And Mechanical Properties Of Kraft Paper For Food Packaging Using Poly (Lactic Acid) Coatings Via Dip-Coating Technique, Putu Hadi Setyarini

Makara Journal of Science

Moisture-resistant kraft paper is important for food packaging because it helps preserve product quality and extend shelf life. However, untreated kraft paper exhibits limited barrier performance owing to the porous and hydrophilic nature of its cellulose structure. Herein, the mechanical and barrier properties of kraft paper were enhanced by applying poly (lactic acid) (PLA) coatings using a dip-coating technique with PLA concentrations ranging from 1 to 5 g/100 mL and either single- or double-dip-coating cycles. The results showed that increasing the PLA concentration and applying a double dip-coating treatment consistently improved coating thickness, tensile strength, elongation at break, water resistance, …

Parameter Identification Of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors Based On Igwo-Aekf, Lei Yao, Zijian Zheng, Tianhao Li, Yulun Chi Jun 2026

Parameter Identification Of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors Based On Igwo-Aekf, Lei Yao, Zijian Zheng, Tianhao Li, Yulun Chi

Journal of System Simulation

The accuracy of the traditional EKF in parameter identification of the PMSM tends to be degraded under load changes or abrupt changes in internal parameters of the motor. This paper proposes an IGWO adaptive interconnected Kalman filter observer, which constructs an adaptive mechanism that combines the innovation and residuals to achieve dynamic adjustment of the process noise matrix and system noise matrix, thereby avoiding the problem of reduced parameter identification accuracy due to reliance on fixed covariance matrices under operating condition changes. A multi-parameter interconnected coupling compensation identification model for PMSM is built to mitigate the effects of measurement noise …

Adaptive Path Planning For Robotic Arms Integrating Rrt* And Apf, Zhirun Chen, Jie Yuan, Erkenbieke Jia, Ningning Zhang, Chao Liu, Yushan Ye

Journal of System Simulation

To address the issues of large search space, low efficiency, and slow convergence of the RRT* algorithm in 3D path planning of robotic manipulators, an adaptive path planning algorithm integrating RRT* and APF is proposed. In the sampling phase, a Sobol sequence-based obstacle avoidance strategy and an APF adaptive-threshold, goal-biased sampling method are used to improve the quality of sampling points. During the expansion phase, sampling, attractive, and repulsive vectors are integrated, and adaptive weights are designed based on environmental information to generate a resultant force direction, thus enhancing the expansion guidance. For step size control, the obstacle repulsive potential …

Robot Friction Force Compensation Algorithm Integrating Temperature And Speed Factors, Jinwang Lü, Ankai Ying, Ming Li, Tao Song, Jie Zhang, Fanghui Qiu, Changcheng Shi, Guokun Zuo, Jialin Xu Jun 2026

Robot Friction Force Compensation Algorithm Integrating Temperature And Speed Factors, Jinwang Lü, Ankai Ying, Ming Li, Tao Song, Jie Zhang, Fanghui Qiu, Changcheng Shi, Guokun Zuo, Jialin Xu

Journal of System Simulation

Insufficient friction force compensation accuracy degrades motion smoothness, stability, and assistive compliance of elbow joint rehabilitation robots. To address this issue, an improved Stribeck friction force model integrating temperature and speed factors was proposed. The model employed an exponentially decaying friction factor to describe the characteristic that the increase rate of friction force slowed down with the rise of the robot's operating speed and designed a viscous function considering temperature effects to suppress friction force fluctuations caused by temperature changes. Experimental results indicate that the model achieves stable friction force compensation under different operating states of the robot and has …

Object Detection Networks And Their Interpretability In Rain, Fog, And Snow Scenarios, Yanji Jiang, Jiayu Cui, Hao Dong, Daqian Liu, Bowen Fei, Miao Yu, Jinshan Huang

Journal of System Simulation

To address the severe degradation of object detection performance under extreme weather conditions, a detection framework based on the Kolmogorov-Arnold theorem, termed KADet, is proposed. A dynamic Kolmogorov-Arnold Transformer is designed, which leverages learnable nonlinear activation functions to enhance the modeling capability for complex distortions introduced by weather degradation. A Kolmogorov-Arnold spatial-channel network is developed by integrating KAT convolution with spatial-channel convolution to strengthen feature learning of relationships between targets and backgrounds in degraded scenes. An improved loss function is introduced to guide the optimization of the activation functions, and interpretability is analyzed through visualization of their curves. …
