Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Small-scale wind turbines offer a promising solution for distributed renewable energy generation. However, this approach often leads to wasted energy when battery capacity is reached, as excess energy is typically dissipated into resistors. The reliance on batteries further increases the cost and complexity of such systems. This paper presents a nonlinear control algorithm for regulating buck-type converters, providing a more efficient energy management solution. By employing a grid-connected inverter, excess energy is utilized rather than dissipated, potentially eliminating the need for batteries and reducing micro-wind turbine installation costs. The proposed control strategy manages the DC-link voltage for the inverter by …

Radio Frequency Wave Propagation Modeling Within Obstructed Underground Mining Environments For Effective Miner Localization During Mine Emergencies, Emmanuel Atta Antwi

Doctoral Dissertations

The reliability of underground wireless communication systems remains a significant challenge, particularly during emergencies when the mine environment becomes severely obstructed by debris, dust, and humidity. These environmental and geometric conditions result in significant attenuation of electromagnetic (EM) waves and multipath effects that undermine miner localization and rescue operations. Existing Vector Parabolic Equation (VPE) models are efficient for straight or mildly curved tunnels but fail to account for the random and obstructive conditions typically encountered during underground emergencies. This research develops a novel radio propagation model for EM wave behavior in underground mine drifts under geometrically obstructed conditions. The model …

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Mobulas (manta and devil rays) are large-scale ram filter feeders that separate planktonic food particles from large volumes of water with minimal clogging. This contrasts with most human-made filters that can suffer from problematic clogging requiring additional mechanisms for clearing blocked surfaces and maintaining performance. Prior studies have shown that mobulas employ a unique mechanism referred to as ricochet separation to filter feed, whereby captive vortices in filter pores cause particles to bounce off the filter surfaces and away from the filter pores. This mechanism enables the filtration of particles smaller than the pore size and reduced clogging. However, few …
