The Educational Impact Of Taking Ethnic Studies In K12: A Mixed Methods Study Of Students In Ethnic Studies Courses, Lesley A. Rivera

This transformative mixed-methods study investigates the academic and personal impacts of Mexican American Studies (MAS) courses on South Texas high school students, addressing critical gaps in Texas-based research. Quantitative measures were combined with qualitative data from semi-structured interviews to reveal a comprehensive picture of MAS outcomes. While quantitative results show moderate academic gains, they also reveal MAS’s powerful role in fostering cultural understanding and student engagement. Qualitative analysis reinforces these findings through five intersecting themes: personal growth, representation, engagement and opportunities, empowerment, and challenges. Guided by Critical Race Theory, LatCrit, and Chicanx Studies, the research demonstrates that ethnic studies courses …

This qualitative case study examined how the upbringing of five Latina educators shaped their teaching philosophies and interpersonal skills in establishing strong rapport with students. By exploring the experiences of these five Latina educators (ages 34-57, with teaching experience ranging from 1 to 27 years) alongside our 75-year-old mother of Mexican descent, the research investigated the impact of cultural upbringing—particularly within the framework of rasquachismo—on ethical care and teacher-student relationships. The study examined how Latinx upbringing and life experiences influence teaching styles and the development of student relationships, ultimately promoting care and success in the classroom. This qualitative case study explored the factors influencing Hispanic students’ decisions to pursue post-secondary education. Guided by the research question, What factors influence Hispanic students’ decision on obtaining a post-secondary college degree? the study examined the lived experiences of five participants who pursued various pathways, including two- and four-year institutions, vocational training, and workforce entry. Semi-structured interviews revealed four central themes: (1) influence and motivation, (2) cultural and educational background, (3) challenges and barriers, and (4) the importance of a college degree. This phenomenological multi-method study examines the lived experiences of music teachers in Virginia and North Carolina working with students who have Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and the cultivation of resilience in music students through music ensemble participation. The purpose of this quantitative, causal-comparative study is to determine if there is a difference in general education teachers’ attitudes toward inclusion and their level of experience. Research has shown that general education teachers’ attitudes are of the utmost importance in the success or failure of inclusion practices. The number of participants sampled was 241 teachers, which exceeds the required minimum of 126 for a one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) with five relatively evenly distributed groups. Educational inequality in the U.S. is often discussed across district lines, but differences between schools within the same district are just as significant. This paper examines intradistrict disparities in Richmond Public Schools (RPS) by comparing William Fox Elementary and Broad Rock Elementary. Although both schools operate under the same district, they serve very different student populations and produce markedly different outcomes.
