Instructor Strategies To Alleviate Stress And Anxiety Among College And University Stem Students, Jeremy L. Hsu, Gregory R. Goldsmith

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

While student stress and anxiety are frequently cited as having negative effects on students’ academic performance, the role that instructors can play in mitigating these challenges is often underappreciated. We provide summaries of different evidence-based strategies, ranging from changes in instructional strategies to specific classroom interventions, that instructors may employ to address and ameliorate student stress and anxiety. While we focus on students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, the strategies we delineate may be more broadly applicable. We begin by highlighting ways in which instructors can learn about and prepare to act to alleviate stress and anxiety. We then …

Perceived Critical Success Factors For Native American And Non-Native American Pre-Licensure Nursing Students In Northern New Mexico, Karen E. Nielsen Feb 2021

Perceived Critical Success Factors For Native American And Non-Native American Pre-Licensure Nursing Students In Northern New Mexico, Karen E. Nielsen

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Considering the consistent healthcare system load demands, nursing shortages persist, especially in remote areas of the United States. It is vital that students interested in attending nursing school and working in their home communities have expanded nursing program access and supports in order to supply the necessary nursing workforce in remote areas. Lack of diversity in the nursing profession weakens healthcare delivery. Native Americans are underrepresented as nursing students and employed nurses. Measures to provide a more diverse workforce should concentrate on recruitment, retention, and graduation rates of underrepresented minority nursing students. Limited research is available surrounding Native American nursing …

Exploring Rural Teachers' Perceptions Of The Achievement Of Professional Agency In The Context Of A School District Mandated Pedagogical Reform, Janice Marie Scudder Feb 2021

Exploring Rural Teachers' Perceptions Of The Achievement Of Professional Agency In The Context Of A School District Mandated Pedagogical Reform, Janice Marie Scudder

Doctor of Education (EdD)

This phenomenological study used the chordal triad of agency within the framework of agentic ecological theory to explore how four rural elementary teachers perceived their achievement of individual professional agency as they participated in a school district mandated pedagogical reform. Given the paucity of research on rural education, the study aimed to clarify how rural teachers understood district-imposed top-down mandates and how that understanding affected their sense of professional agency. Within the chordal triad eight major stages of agency emerged: (a) agentic acceptance; (b) agentic anticipation; (c) agentic alienation; (d) agentic amnesia; (e) agentic guilt; (f) agentic suppression; (g) agentic …

Generic Expectations In First Year Writing: Teaching Metadiscoursal Reflection And Revision Strategies For Increased Generic Uptake Of Academic Writing, Kaelah Rose Scheff Feb 2021

Generic Expectations In First Year Writing: Teaching Metadiscoursal Reflection And Revision Strategies For Increased Generic Uptake Of Academic Writing, Kaelah Rose Scheff

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines how student uptake of academic genres in First Year Writing (FYW) are challenged by the concept of writing expectations. Previous research on uptake has focused on uptake between genres with little attention to the role of writing expectations on the event of uptake or how to translate these expectations to students pedagogically. Identifying pedagogical uptake strategies for students to use across academic genres provides instructors with insight into student challenges in FYW and strategies for students to understand their own writing on a metacognitive level by assessing writing expectations. My thesis investigates uptake of academic writing in …

A Teacher Shortage And Lack Of Representation In The Classroom: A Neoliberal And Critical Race Study Of The Broken Teacher Pipeline And The Impact On Education Majors, Sara Piotrowski Feb 2021

A Teacher Shortage And Lack Of Representation In The Classroom: A Neoliberal And Critical Race Study Of The Broken Teacher Pipeline And The Impact On Education Majors, Sara Piotrowski

Theses and Dissertations

Teacher education attrition is a largely understudied topic, especially from the perspective of the college student. What factors prevented education majors from graduating with a teaching degree? There are countless studies about teacher attrition within the first five years in the classroom (DeAngelis et al., 2013; Kopkowski, 2008; Office of Postsecondary Education [OPE], 2015), but the research is sparse when it comes to the retention rate of education majors. Why do students get accepted and enter college as education majors and then not graduate with a degree to become a teacher? The purpose of this study was to consider factors …
