Graves County, Kentucky Militia Rolls For The 1863 Draft, Dieter C. Ullrich
Graves County, Kentucky Militia Rolls For The 1863 Draft, Dieter C. Ullrich
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
On March 3, 1863, the United States Congress passed the Enrollment Act of 1863 to allow for the conscription men into the Union Army. It became the first instance of compulsory military service in American history. The law was initially devised to encourage men to volunteer rather than to be drafted outright. Each congressional district was given a quota of volunteers and if not met a draft would be ordered. The first draft for 100,000 men to serve six months was held nationally on June 15, 1863 but fell well short of the expected mark. A second was to be …

Identity And Image: The Process Of Cultivating Perceptions Of Secondary Schools, Kathryn Mcwilliams
Identity And Image: The Process Of Cultivating Perceptions Of Secondary Schools, Kathryn Mcwilliams
Educational Leadership Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
Group associations are a fundamental aspect of the human condition, facilitating the most basic as well as more complex needs for survival. Tajfel’s research outlines the impact that such associations have on how humans create identities for themselves. Providing pride or shame, organizations have a profound opportunity to shape its members’ senses of self-efficacy. Organizations, therefore, need to be mindful of their group identity and image to positively influence the self-esteem of those members. Nowhere is this as important as secondary schools where students are not only at a formative age, but also are often assigned to their school based …

Determining Stakeholder Perspectives Within A Local Multi-Stakeholder Collaborative Network, Garret Higginbotham
Educational Leadership Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
The need for a STEM literate workforce has presented a complex issue on both the national and local level. The Omaha STEM Ecosystem was established in 2016 as a connecting agency to leverage the social capital of member stakeholders in addressing STEM workforce gaps by strengthening the availability of STEM pipeline learning opportunities in the Omaha Metro Area. This study presents a qualitative analysis of organizational documents and semi-structured interviews. Stakeholder groups were divided into Producer (Business, Government, and Non-Profit) and Consumer stakeholders (Education, Families, and Science Centers and Museums). Interviews for this publication present the Consumer stakeholder group, while …

Stakeholder Perceptions Of Success Within A Stem Ecosystem, Heather L. Daubert
Educational Leadership Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
The Omaha STEM Ecosystem (OSE) is a multi-stakeholder collaborative network (MSCN) with active members from six key stakeholder groups (Business, Education, Family, Government, Non-Profit, and Science Centers and Museums). OSE serves as a connecting agency which leverages the social capital of these member stakeholders to address the STEM workforce gap by strengthening the availability of STEM pipeline learning opportunities. The purpose of this qualitative study was to synthesize the shared and nuanced definition of success for all key stakeholder groups in OSE with the STEM lexicon. This dissertation presents the findings of semi-structured interviews with a theory of success built …
Centropoly: The Structure Of Educational Failures In The U.S., Martha Bradley-Dorsey
Centropoly: The Structure Of Educational Failures In The U.S., Martha Bradley-Dorsey
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
How did a country birthed in individual liberty and voluntary associations create just the opposite in its inflexible, layered, government-controlled public education system? Here, using public choice theory, I explain how near-sighted and unrelated reforms, often based in private motives, gave us what I call the public education centropoly – a hybrid government organization consisting of a set of monopolies layered beneath two additional government levels that especially fails disadvantaged students.
After defending the use of public choice theory (Chapter 1) and summarizing the U.S. public education system formation (Chapter 2), in Chapter 3 I examine the Elementary and Secondary …
Preferred Methods Of Communication Of Millennial Alumni Of The University Of Arkansas’ Agricultural Education, Communications And Technology Department And The Impact Of Brand Community On Potential Philanthropy, Wells William Clark
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Higher education institutions depend upon alumni support (Gaier, 2005). Understanding how those institutions communicate with alumni about methods of financial giving is necessary in securing their support. The concept of brand community, an idea formed through social relationships amongst consumers of a common brand, regardless of location, who acknowledge their overlapping interests and share traditions and a sense of duty related to the brand (McAlexander et al., 2006; Muniz & O’Guinn, 2001), can contribute to desired behaviors such as donations and engagement in alumni groups. Exploration of this concept was conducted in relation to young alumni (those graduating from 2008-2018).The …

Throughout my time as President of East Tennessee State University, I have enjoyed the privilege of working with many great leaders – individuals who have distinguished themselves as legends in Tennessee higher education. Having the opportunity to continue the legacy of Dr. Paul Stanton was one of the greatest honors ever bestowed upon me. My arrival at ETSU also allowed me to reconnect with Dr. Bert C. Bach, who at the time was the institution’s Provost. He and I had worked closely together during my tenure at the Tennessee Higher Education Commission, and we had collaborated on many initiatives. Supporting Child Development Through Parenting Interventions In Low- To Middle-Income Countries: An Updated Systematic Review, Linlin Zhang, Derrick Ssewanyana, Marie-Claude Martin, Stephen Lye, Greg Moran, Amina Abubakar, Kofi Marfo, Joyce Marangu, Kerrie Proulx, Tina Malti
Institute for Human Development, East Africa
Background: Over 250 million children in low- and middle-income countries are at risk of not achieving their fullest developmental potential due to co-occurring risks such as poor nutrition and inadequate learning opportunities. Early intervention programs integrating the aspects of nurturing care, that is, good health, adequate nutrition, safety and security, responsive caregiving, and learning opportunities, may ameliorate against the negative impact of these adverse conditions.
Methods: This meta-analytic review updates the evidence base of parenting interventions comprising stimulation and responsive caregiving components on developmental outcomes for children under age 2 years in low- and middle-income countries. It also describes and …
