School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Throughout the twentieth century and into the new millennium, the public and private sectors within the United States have attempted to buttress its economic, defense and educational achievement postures by implementing several educational initiatives and curricular changes. Around 2010 the National Resource Council began to initiate the latest science curriculum titled The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). A redesign in curricular approach, focused on student-centered inquiry and its foundations in cross-cutting concepts, science and engineering practices and disciplinary core ideas. This curriculum is in the process of adoption and adaptation by the states. Additional initiatives in the form of modifying …

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
In a technology driven world, I often wonder where the balance is between the utility of technology tools, such as smartphones, tablets, or computers, and the social and health implications of the intense use of these technologies. On the one hand, smartphones, tablets, and other like devices, deliver information at the touch of our fingertips in ways only imagined just a few decades ago. The use of these technologies has greatly increased our capacity for research and learning new information. Because of this speed and efficiency of accessible information, along with the ability to reach anyone at any time, it …

As the demographics of our nation’s schools change dramatically, the issue of the achievement gap within our schools becomes more pronounced. Our students are more diverse in race, ability, language and sexual orientation than ever before. Along with these changes, come changes in the needs and learning styles of our students. It is critical for academic success that students are engaged in material that is relevant to their own lives and reflects their lived experiences. However, in secondary English departments across the country, teachers are being asked to teach the same texts and use the same materials that have been …

Creating An Equity Based Genetics Unit Using Culturally Relevant Pedagogy And The Next Generation Science Standards, Katherine Quattrini
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Research has shown that BIPOC (Black, Indigineous, People of Color) students often feel disconnected from science learning. Teacher bias, the way “achievement” is viewed, a lack of role models, and the traditional way in which science is taught has contributed to a lack of engagement among BIPOC students and thus a disproportionate amount of these students not entering into STEM fields as careers. Changing this narrative will involve reframing the way that science is taught and the way in which curriculum is created, and increasing interest in the sciences needs to start with creating a more equitable science curriculum for …

Schools in America today operate to assimilate and oppress students of color, continuing to uphold systems of white supremacy that specifically harm Black and Indigenous students (Paris & Alim, 2014, 2017). Given this climate of systematic violence pervasive in schools, it is of paramount importance that all educators commit to unfaltering antiracism. This Capstone Project sets out to answer the research question: How can the implementation of culturally and linguistically responsive discussion protocols elevate students to lead critical conversations about race and identity in an English classroom? Through this inquiry, this study designs curriculum for a high school, English elective …

Availability Of Diverse Books For Early Elementary Students, Lili Weisman
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Today students are more diverse than ever. They come from all different backgrounds. Many students are multicultural. Because of this, teachers and educators must have diverse books available to students. Diverse books allow students to gain self-confidence (Gomez-Najarro, 2020) and give them a new perspective on how others live their lives (Harper & Brand, 2010). However, when choosing diverse books, it is significant that the culture depicted in the book is accurate and not based on stereotypes and generalizations. Stereotypes and generalizations do not give the reader an accurate perspective and can be harmful (Harper & Brand, 2010). When looking …

Culturally Sustaining Social Studies: Practical Applications To A High School Elective Course, Emily Thomas
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Scholars including Delpit, Ladson-Billings, Chandler, Paris and Alim remind us that schools must be a place where students’ cultures are validated, centered, and sustained. Social studies classrooms are optimally positioned to allow students to explore issues around race, class, gender, and other forms of (in)justice. Yet while many social studies teachers wish to teach in alignment with the theory of culturally sustaining pedagogy, powerful factors make its tenets difficult to enact in the classroom. This project embedded culturally sustaining pedagogy into curriculum design for a high school Environmental History elective. Using Tomlinson and McTighe’s (2006) Understanding by Design + Differentiated …
