Creating Sustainable Volunteer Programs: Understanding Why United4hope's Church Coordinators Volunteer, Stanley Weber
Creating Sustainable Volunteer Programs: Understanding Why United4hope's Church Coordinators Volunteer, Stanley Weber
Student Theses
Abstract Using the Volunteer Function Inventory (Clary et al., 1998), this descriptive research study gathered mean, median, and mode data of 42 United4Hope Church Coordinators (UCC) to further understand why each UCC had chosen to volunteer. This study is significant for U4H since these critical leaders provide leadership without traditional power sources and lead volunteers who can freely choose whether or not to follow. When applying Clary et al.’s (1998) 6-factor clusters, data showed that values (a means to express one’s altruistic and humanitarian values) motivation factors were the most significant factor across the group. This factor was followed by …

An Exploratory Study Of Adjunct Faculty Professional Growth Experiences, Bethany Ann Potts
An Exploratory Study Of Adjunct Faculty Professional Growth Experiences, Bethany Ann Potts
Dissertations and Theses
Part-time non-tenure track faculty, also referred to as adjunct faculty, are the fastest growing instructional group in higher education, but they are provided minimal professional support from their employing institution(s). This lack of support is a problem because working conditions shape instructors' investment and efficacy of performance in their professional practice. Well established in the literature are inquiries into adjunct faculty working conditions that prioritize analysis of the organization over the lived experiences of the faculty. However, the lived experiences of adjunct faculty offer a unique and important lens from which to interrogate the impact of institutional policies and practices …

A memo sent to campus on Wednesday, July 28, 2021 regarding the new CDC COVID-19 recommendations that were released on Tuesday, July 27, 2021:
Dear ETSU community,
Yesterday afternoon, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced new recommendations regarding face coverings for fully-vaccinated individuals. This guidance comes in the wake of growing concerns over the Delta variant of COVID-19 and declining vaccine uptake rates.
In accordance with these new CDC guidelines, ETSU encourages the use of face coverings indoors for everyone during this period of “substantial transmission.” While wearing face coverings on campus is not required, we encourage …

Cultivating Graduate Stem Pathways: How Alliance-Based Stem Enrichment Programs Broker Opportunity For Students Of Color, Ariana L. Garcia, Tonisha B. Lane, Blanca E. Rincón
Educational Psychology, Leadership, and Higher Education Faculty Research
To understand how higher education institutions broker graduate opportunities for Students of Color (SOCs) in STEM, we employ a single case study of a Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) alliance. Drawing primarily from student interviews and informed by Small’s (2006) organizational brokerage theory, our findings illuminate how 1) alliance-based STEM enrichment programs (SEPs) bridge social capital via interorganizational networks and 2) how SEP instability creates barriers to building the trust that is central to the brokerage process. We conclude with recommendations for future research and practice.

In-Person To Virtual In Six Weeks: Moving A Conference Online Due To Covid-19, Emily K. Chan, Daina Dickman, Nicole Lawson
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
The Scholarly Communication Assessment Forum (SCAF) was planned to be held on the Sacramento State campus on May 4 & 5, 2020. When pandemic-related shelter-in-place restrictions were imposed in mid-March and it became clear an in-person event would be impossible, the project team had to quickly shift to a virtual event. While quickly changing the format of the event was challenging, there were also unexpected benefits. The project team was able to collect much richer data by recording all sessions and breakout discussions. Extending the timeline for the project also allowed for more in depth analysis of forum transcripts and …

Perceptions Of Southwest Missouri Public School K‒12 Teachers And Building Principals In Regard To Preparedness Of Culturally Responsive Teaching, Katie C. Kensinger
Dissertations
Over the past two decades, K‒12 public education demographics have reflected an increase in student diversity while over 80% of the teaching population remains White (Ramirez et al., 2016). As student demographics evolve, public schools must adjust to provide all students with an education relevant to their backgrounds and experiences (Jones-Good, 2015). Teachers must prioritize and be prepared to teach diverse groups of students (Gay, 2018). This mixed-methods study included an analysis of teacher and principal perceptions of their level of preparedness for culturally responsive teaching in four southwest Missouri school districts with diverse student populations. The focus was placed …
