The Impact Of Co-Teaching On Students Receiving Special Education Services, Shantal Spoden Mar 2022

The Impact Of Co-Teaching On Students Receiving Special Education Services, Shantal Spoden

Graduate Teacher Education

Delivering special education services has evolved as research continues to support the importance of an inclusive classroom. The development of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 required that all students receiving special education have the same access and opportunities to the same high academic standards as students without disadvantaged backgrounds such as race, disability, and socioeconomic status (U.S. Department of Education, 2000). Considering the requirements to keep all students in their natural learning environments as much as possible, innovative ways to meet the individual needs of each student continue to progress. Co-teaching is a service delivery model which …

Culturally And Linguistically Responsive Teaching Practices For English Learners, Alanna Williamson Mar 2022

Culturally And Linguistically Responsive Teaching Practices For English Learners, Alanna Williamson

Graduate Teacher Education

English Language Learners (ELLs) in the United States have continually underachieved in literacy. This paper evaluated research done on the effectiveness of culturally and linguistically responsive (CLR) practices on literacy improvement for preschool to early elementary ELLs. Multiple studies were synthesized in the areas of positive and negative teacher perceptions, effective culturally and linguistically responsive strategies, and creating independent learners. The research determined CLR teaching to be an effective method for improving teacher perceptions of ELLs. It was also shown that through culturally and linguistically responsive practices, teachers can offer successful literacy strategies. The studies additionally indicated CLR practices could …

Decentering Whiteness In Teacher Education Through A Creative Self Study Of Womanist Caring Pedagogy, Jane Ammon Mar 2022

Decentering Whiteness In Teacher Education Through A Creative Self Study Of Womanist Caring Pedagogy, Jane Ammon

Education Doctorate Dissertations

Teacher education faculty in higher education continues to mirror K–12 schools, continuing to be comprised of predominately White women, thus creating a what is known as a cultural gap for teacher education students from marginalized populations in colleges. This culture gap, created by modeling Whiteness as the expected and accepted norm, is often painfully evident to students of color though invisible to White teachers who do not seek to change the current systematic racism prevalent in many teacher education programs. The understanding of self through the critical Whiteness lens is in the movement of the second wave of critical Whiteness …

A Qualitative Study Of Middle School Science Teachers’ Perceptions Of The Transition To Online Instruction During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Brian S. Ward

Doctor of Education (Ed.D)

The purpose of this study was to explore the unique lived experiences of four middle school science teachers from North Carolina and South Carolina during and following the transition from in-person to online instruction due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Four predominant themes were identified from individual, semi-structured interviews of the teachers: technology change; organizational change; changes in curricula, delivery, and student interaction; and career and personal changes. The teachers in this study described the challenges and opportunities experienced during the rapid transition in March 2020 to virtual teaching and learning. The teachers’ lived experiences seamlessly aligned with the stages of …

Psychosocial Reserve Capacity, Family Background And Selection Of An Educational Path – A Longitudinal Study From Finland, Paulyn Jean A. Claro, Leena Kristiina Koivusilta, Mari-Pauliina Vainikainen, Arja Rimpelä

Graduate School of Business Publications

Finnish students start academic or vocational track in upper secondary education at age 16 years. Track placement is based on grades, but family background and psychosocial resources may have influences. Using 2014 survey data of Grade 9 students in Helsinki Metropolitan area linked to the Joint Application Registry data as of 2017, we fitted two-level, sex-stratified, generalized structural equation models to determine how reserve capacity (academic self-efficacy and social support), family background, and the comprehensive schools predict track placement. Adjusting for the effect of grades, low reserve capacity and disadvantaged family background increased probabilities of vocational track and non-placement of …

Transfer Students And The Excess Credit Hour Surcharge: A Program Evaluation Of An Excess Credit Hour Surcharge Training, Chandra Davis

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The transfer student population is rising on college campuses in the United States. Consequently, higher education institutions want to better understand how to support this growing and diverse population. Faced with increased demand for accountability, colleges and universities have developed various initiatives to increase college graduation rates. One such initiative is the Excess Credit Hour Surcharge. The Florida state statute, commonly known as the Excess Credit Hour Surcharge, was introduced by legislators in 2009. The Florida legislature incentivizes state university students to graduate promptly and efficiently to avoid a surcharge. However, the legislation affects transfer students in a unique way …

From “Spring Break” To “Reading Days”: Contingency, Relations Of Power, And Positionalities In Experiences Of Overwork During Academic Breaks, Kelli R. Lycke Martin, Ann Shivers-Mcnair

Academic Labor: Research and Artistry (2017-2022 archives)

In this article, the authors analyze the impacts of their university eliminating Spring Break and replacing it with intermittent Reading Days during the Covid-19 pandemic. With particular attention to contingency, relations of power, and positionalities, they offer narratives of their lived experiences with Reading Days as a graduate student (Author 1) and as a pre-tenure faculty member (Author 2). They also offer analysis of the public conversations surrounding the institutional decision. The article addresses how the particularities of the narratives are symptomatic of a culture of overwork that predates and continues beyond the moment in time and place of the …

Zoom ‘N Gloom: Performativity And Inclusivity During The Pandemic And Beyond, Sarah V. Seeley Mar 2022

Zoom ‘N Gloom: Performativity And Inclusivity During The Pandemic And Beyond, Sarah V. Seeley

Academic Labor: Research and Artistry (2017-2022 archives)

The pandemic has variously amplified, eliminated, and otherwise transformed the experiences and meanings of work across sectors and nation states. In the context of higher education, this transformation has taken many shapes, which have been molded by pre-existing, if not predictable, inequalities. If we set up all the well-documented pandemic-induced obstacles to work alongside the performative nature of academic work, there is a notable uneasiness. Insofar as the nature of work is changing— becoming more challenging, in general—there must be further implications for work that is “on display.” Within this context, the article focuses on the experiences of teaching and …

The Pandemic, Contingent Faculty, And Catholic Colleges And Universities, Jason King Mar 2022

The Pandemic, Contingent Faculty, And Catholic Colleges And Universities, Jason King

Academic Labor: Research and Artistry (2017-2022 archives)

In this paper, we explore the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on contingent faculty in Catholic higher education. As a baseline for comparison, we draw on our 2019 essay which traced the increasing reliance on contingent faculty in Catholic higher education from 2001-2017. When compared to 2020, we find three significant results. First, Catholic colleges and universities responded to the pandemic by reducing all employment – administration, staff, tenured/tenured track faculty, and contingent faculty. In this general reduction, contingent faculty was reduced by 2.6%. Second, the reduction in employment was particularly pronounced in small Catholic schools. At these schools, contingent …

“Drown[Ing] A Little Bit All The Time: The Intersections Of Labor Constraints And Professional Development In Hybrid Contingent Faculty Experiences, Courtney Adams Wooten, Brian Fitzpatrick, Lourdes Fernandez, Ariel M. Goldenthal, Jessica Matthews Mar 2022

Goldenthal, Jessica Matthews

Academic Labor: Research and Artistry (2017-2022 archives)

Faculty teaching during COVID-19 have been asked to adapt to a wide range of instructional modalities that have often increased the labor they experience without commensurate compensation. Hybrid courses, which were already popular pre-pandemic, have become even more common as schools and universities have rushed to adapt instruction to students’ needs. This article reports on interviews with faculty teaching hybrid courses to investigate their perceptions of the labor involved in teaching in this instructional modality, drawing connections to the labor many faculty are experiencing as they adapt to hybrid or other, similar instructional modalities. It then argues that targeted professional …

Overcoming The Imposter Phenomenon: Exploring The Strategies Secondary Educators Used To Cope During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Barbra J.C. Bedwell

Dissertations

Purpose. The purpose of this descriptive mixed-method study was to explore and describe the coping skills used by secondary teachers who identified as experiencing the impostor phenomenon (IP) by the Clance Impostor Phenomenon Scale (CIPS) (Clance, 1985) to overcome the nine behavioral characteristics of IP during the transition to distance learning in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Methodology. This descriptive mixed-methods research design used both quantitative and qualitative techniques to identify teachers with IP and explore the coping techniques they used during distance learning. First, a quantitative 20-question diagnostic survey, the CIPS, was used to identify teachers with IP. …
