Hands-on STEM activities, related to Einstein’s work, are introduced as a way to address several of the required NGSS physical science standards for grade 3. We will learn about force, motion, electricity, and light using simple materials and the type of play once experienced by a boy growing up in his family’s electrical equipment shop. We will explore ways for students to document their physics discoveries through grade-appropriate writing.

Effectiveness Of Virtual Reality Simulations For Civilian, Ab Initio Pilot Training, Michelle P. Hight, Stephanie G. Fussell, Martin A. Kurkchubasche, Ian J. Hummell Mar 2022

Effectiveness Of Virtual Reality Simulations For Civilian, Ab Initio Pilot Training, Michelle P. Hight, Stephanie G. Fussell, Martin A. Kurkchubasche, Ian J. Hummell

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

Aviation training in the immersive Virtual Reality (VR) world has the power to overcome physical constraints, presenting cues and stimuli that would not be available in flight, nor in a two-dimensional (2D) environment. This gives VR powerful potential as a simulation tool for learning complex skills and maneuvers in the cockpit. This study evaluated the effectiveness of VR simulations as compared to traditional 2D desktop simulations in teaching maneuvers and skills to ab initio (inexperienced) civilian pilot trainees. This quasi-experimental project involved 17 freshman pilot students in an experimental college course at a private university campus in the fall semester …

Plain Language Or Anything But?, Jennifer F. Drayton, Averil Coxhead Mar 2022

Plain Language Or Anything But?, Jennifer F. Drayton, Averil Coxhead

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

This paper focuses on what language needs to be used in emergencies by air traffic controllers based on an investigation of plain language definitions and descriptions in International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) publications and in the beliefs of nine air traffic controllers in the United Arab Emirates. The aim of the study is pedagogical, in that it is important to establish what language trainee air traffic controllers need to use during emergencies, but there is little in the way of course books or materials that can inform course development. Findings suggest there are contradictions in the ICAO documentation, and differences …

An Analysis Of The Impact And Efficacy Of Online Emotional Intelligence Coaching As A Support Mechanism For University Students, Aiden Carthy, Wyndham Chalmers, Eoghan Guiry, Philip Owende

Articles

As a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic, many college courses have pivoted to complete online delivery and colleges are also tasked with providing student supports online. It is likely this transition will last beyond any COVID-19 specific restrictions, therefore this small-scale, exploratory study examined the efficacy and impact of the provision of a 5 week online emotional intelligence (EI) coaching programme to a cohort of Irish university students (n = 19) studying at Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin). Results revealed that the average overall level of EI increased for participants following the coaching programme. Students reported that they believed …

Proceedings: 2022 Global Voices on the University of Dayton Campus

In 2000, South Africa’s president Thabo Mbeki stated that the twenty-first century would be the “Century of Africa.” Indeed I, like many, believe that Africa is a continent full of promise, rich cultural heritage, blessed with a wealth of natural resources, and poised to become a hub of innovation and progress. Recently, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken remarked that Africa is headed toward becoming one of the world’s most important economic regions, and that it will have a hand in shaping in the future of the world. Recent advances have been made in solar power, the “green tech” industry working …

Provisional Behavioral Health Licenses To Full Licenses: Analysis Of Nebraska Behavioral Workforce Data 2009–2019, Shinobu Watanabe-Galloway, Christine Chasek, Marley Doyle, Allison Grennan, Julia F. Houfek, Zaeema Naveed, Erin Obermeier Schneider

Counseling Faculty Publications

There is a need to recruit and to retain behavioral health providers especially when providers are moving from the provisional licensing status to a full licensure status. This study estimated the rates of conversion of provisional licenses to full licenses among provisionally licensed psychologists, mental health practitioners, master social workers, and alcohol and drug counselors (ADCs) in Nebraska and examined potential associations among demographic characteristics and license conversion rates. Nebraska’s behavioral health licensure data (2009–2019) was obtained from the Health Professional Tracking Service (HPTS) program that was established as a joint effort between Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, …

2022-March-03-Etsu Research Explores Pharmacists' Role In Decreasing Fall Risk, Bill Gatton College Of Pharmacy, East Tennessee State University, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University

ETSU News

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 3, 2022) – Fall risk is a major cause of injury and death for older patients. Traditionally, a pharmacist’s role in lowering that risk has been unknown – until now.

Since pharmacists play a major role in managing patients’ drug interactions, faculty and staff from East Tennessee State University Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy and the College of Clinical and Rehabilitative Health Sciences teamed up to explore how pharmacists can help decrease fall risk for older patients by assessing medications and patient characteristics such as height, weight and gender.

This specific research aim was part of …
