How Can Cognitive Science Contribute To Sport? How Can Sport Contribute To Neuroscience?, Slawomir Kujawski, Agnieszka Kujawska
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
Background: In this mini-review we would like to focus on common points of neuroscience and sports science. We will shortly describe a few parts of this unity namely; nerve conduction studies, cognitive profiles of sportsmen and an influence of physical training on cognitive functioning. We want to emphasize the importance of so far conducted research: on the one hand, its application in the methodology of sport training, and on the other hand, expanding the field of knowledge in neuroscience. Material/Methods: Analysis of articles in the EBSCO database using keywords: athletes, sportsmen, cognitive tests, physical training, elderly, psychological traits, cognitive profile. …

Changes In Special Fitness Efficiency Of Ten-Year-Old Tennis Players In The Annual Training Cycle, Tomasz Waldzinski, Ewa Waldzinska
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
Background: The course of match actions is definitely gaining pace and dynamics because offensive and aggressive styles of the game are preferred. So there is no doubt that an appropriate level of competitors’ physical preparation has a fundamental meaning. The goal of the research was to determine changes in special fitness efficiency. Material/Methods: The research was based on a group of 16 tennis players aged 10 training tennis in the annual training cycle. In order to evaluate the level of special fitness efficiency, two tests reflecting physical fitness were used: “The game against the wall” and “The test of 100 …

Background: The main purpose of this study was to compare the physiological response and time-motion analysis of male and female soccer players during 4 vs 4 small-sided games. Material/Methods: Thirteen adult, professional, male and fifteen female soccer players, participated in the study. Small-sided games (4 vs 4) were performed in an interval format: 4 x 4 min, 2 min of active recovery. The distance covered by the players during small-sided games and heart rate responses were measured. Results: The average intensity during the small-sided games was between 89.4 and 90.6% HRmax in male and between 88.9 and 90.2% HRmax in …

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
Background: Exercise-induced stressors activate leukocyte HSPA1A and HSPB1 gene transcripts. However it is not clear how plyometric training affects the expression of these genes in basketball players under plyometric exercise. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the changes in leukocyte HSPA1A and HSPB1 mRNA, in male basketball players after plyometric training. Material/Methods: Twelve male college basketball players (age 22.1 ±2.96 years) took part in this study. Peripheral blood (2.0 ml) was collected from the ulnar vein of each participant before and after a plyometric exercise to assess HSPA1A and HSPB1 mRNA relative expression of leukocyte via quantitative …

Physical Activity And Body Image Of Women: Literature Review, Sonia Mosur-Kaluza, Monika Guszkowska
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
This study represents a review of literature on the relationship between recreational physical activity and the body image. This research encompasses 39 papers published between 2008 and 2015 that were available in the Academic Search Complete database. The results of comparative, prospective, and experimental research are ambiguous. These data suggest both a positive relationship between the body image and physical activity, i.e. a more positive body image among more active people and an improvement in the body image as a result of regular exercise, and a negative relationship, in particular, a more negative body image in persons engaging in “aesthetic” …

Task Dependency Of Movement Regulation In Female Gymnastic Vaulting, Thomas Heinen, Isabell Artmann, Anja Brinker, Marc Nicolaus
Task Dependency Of Movement Regulation In Female Gymnastic Vaulting, Thomas Heinen, Isabell Artmann, Anja Brinker, Marc Nicolaus
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
Background: In gymnastics vaulting it is thought that gymnasts regulate their run-up on the basis of visually perceived environmental information, such as the position of the springboard, with the aim of an accurate foot placement on the springboard. The question, however, arises if these regulative processes found in gymnastics vaulting can be generalized to other tasks with similar demands but differing dynamics? Material/Methods: To answer this question, ten female gymnasts were asked to perform two target-directed gymnastics tasks that were similar in task demands but differed in task dynamics. When performing the two tasks, the position of the springboard was …

The current investigation examined the influence of the front and back squat variations on the load experienced by the Achilles tendon. Material/Methods: Achilles tendon loads were obtained from eighteen experienced male participants as they completed both back and front squats. Differences between squat conditions were examined using Bonferroni adjusted (p = 0.0125) paired t-tests. Results: The results showed that the peak Achilles tendon load …

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
Background: Kicking actions have been implicated in the aetiology of soccer injuries, and the unilateral nature of kicking may influence this. The aim of the current investigation was to determine whether soccer players exhibit bilateral differences in support limb patellar tendon loads. Material/Methods: Fifteen male soccer players were examined whilst kicking a stationary soccer ball with both their dominant and non-dominant feet. Patellar tendon kinetics were obtained from each limb and then contrasted using paired samples t-tests. Results: Significant increases in patellar tendon kinetics were found when using the non-dominant limb. Conclusions: The findings from the current investigation have clinical significance …

New Teachers Enacting Culturally Relevant Pedagogy In Literacy Instruction, Sarri A. Gibson
Doctor of Education (EdD)
This multiple case study investigated the experiences of majority culture teachers at the beginning of their careers as they navigated enacting culturally relevant pedagogy (CRP) in their literacy instruction. The study explored how the new teachers described and enacted CRP in their classrooms, what they described as formative to their work as culturally relevant educators, what they identified as challenging, and what they found to be sustaining. The study shares case reports of each participant followed by a cross case analysis. Several themes were noteworthy from the analysis: 1) participants viewed an event or time period as formative, 2) participants …
