Salivary Mirna As An Early Biomarker For Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Shloka Potineni Apr 2026

Salivary Mirna As An Early Biomarker For Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Shloka Potineni

Student Publications and Research

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is diagnosed at late stages in the majority of cases despite its physically accessible location, resulting in five-year survival rates that drop from 90% at Stage I to below 50% at Stage III or IV. Current screening relies on visual examination and invasive biopsy, neither of which can detect the molecular changes that precede visible tumor formation. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) in saliva reflect tumor biology before lesions appear, but the signal spans over 2,000 species simultaneously, making traditional statistical methods insufficient for reliable diagnostic pattern extraction.

This study applies a Random Forest classifier to miRNA expression …

The Effect Of A Low-Glycemic Index Diet On Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Symptoms Among University-Aged Women, Angelika A. Gonzalez, Annalise M. Sankar, Noelle D. Nguyen Apr 2026

The Effect Of A Low-Glycemic Index Diet On Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Symptoms Among University-Aged Women, Angelika A. Gonzalez, Annalise M. Sankar, Noelle D. Nguyen

Department of Nutrition Student Projects

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is an endocrine disorder among women of reproductive age and is associated with insulin resistance, menstrual irregularities, hyperandrogenism, and metabolic dysfunction. Dietary modifications targeting glycemic response have emerged as a nonpharmacologic approach for PCOS management. However, long-term randomized controlled trials targeting young adult populations remain limited.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate long-term effects of adherence to a low-glycemic index diet on the frequency and severity of PCOS symptoms among female college students ages 18-22. This 12-month randomized controlled trial will recruit participants meeting the Rotterdam criteria from university health clinics. Participants will be randomly …

Effects Of Probiotic Supplementation On Symptoms In Teenagers Ages 13-18 With Inflammatory Skin Conditions, Katelyn S. Walker, Jessica Rosen, Matilde Belfiore Apr 2026

Effects Of Probiotic Supplementation On Symptoms In Teenagers Ages 13-18 With Inflammatory Skin Conditions, Katelyn S. Walker, Jessica Rosen, Matilde Belfiore

Department of Nutrition Student Projects

Teenagers between the ages of 13 and 18 are particularly susceptible to inflammatory skin disorders such as acne vulgaris and atopic dermatitis, which can have a detrimental effect on their physical and mental health. Emerging evidence highlights the importance of the gut-skin axis, indicating that the makeup of the gut microbiota affects both skin health and systemic inflammation. Adolescent-specific research is still limited even though probiotic supplementation, especially Lactobacillus strains, has demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects in laboratory, animal, and small clinical studies.

The purpose of this experimental study is to determine whether oral probiotic supplementation improves inflammatory skin condition symptoms in …

Policy Shifts And Educational Access: An Analysis Of Financial Aid Limitations Under The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, Alison Ayala-Jones Apr 2026

Policy Shifts And Educational Access: An Analysis Of Financial Aid Limitations Under The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, Alison Ayala-Jones

Undergraduate Research Symposium Lightning Talks

This paper examines the Department of Education’s reclassification of professional and non-professional studies in relation to the newly imposed caps on the amount of financial aid students can access, as stated in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. While these policy changes take into consideration economic constraints and the principle of supporting students through more effective allocation of resources, they do not function as intended and instead disproportionately affect low-income students. By limiting the total aid available, the policy restricts access to certain programs, particularly for those who rely most heavily on financial assistance. Although education was historically intended to …

Lightning Talk, Emmanuel Insley Napa

Undergraduate Research Symposium Lightning Talks

This research examines the tension between public taxpayer funded professional sports stadiums and the decline of public education within the Clark County School District. While projects like Allegiant Stadium and upcoming Athletics stadium have received hundreds of millions in public funding, CCSD faces a $50 million budget deficit driven by low enrollment and rising employee costs. Thus, the increasing revenues at the state level do not correspond to success in K-12. This study uses the quantitative comparative analysis to evaluate the Return on Investment of public funds used for the public sports stadiums versus the investments in CCSD. By calculating …

The Bridge Between Home And School: Assessing The Impacts Of No-Homework Policies On Primary School Students, Kate Castillo Galeote Apr 2026

The Bridge Between Home And School: Assessing The Impacts Of No-Homework Policies On Primary School Students, Kate Castillo Galeote

Undergraduate Research Symposium Podium Presentations

The subject of having homework in primary school education has been an ongoing debate sparking interests amongst school administration, parents, and students. Homework serves as the foundation of learning to many children and the skills they develop. It has also been known to be an extension to the school day, providing at home practice to further develop skills. Primary school institutions are now shifting towards a no homework environment, disrupting many skills and habits during a child's development. Through analyzing academic works related to the effectiveness of homework in primary school institutions, I find a consensus among works that demonstrate …

Political Sophistication: Approaching The Education Divide, Madeline Krieger Apr 2026

Political Sophistication: Approaching The Education Divide, Madeline Krieger

Undergraduate Research Symposium Podium Presentations

The 2024 presidential election had the second highest turnout in recent history, with 64 percent of Americans casting a vote. In the context of midterm and local elections, this level of participation is rarely observed. If democracy is driven by constituent input, it is essential to examine who has the resources and incentives to participate. This review considers academic, peer-reviewed literature that examines voting and political sophistication, or an individual’s ability to acquire and apply political knowledge. While sociodemographic and economic variables influence political participation, educational attainment serves as an intersection of both. Access to quality education and post-secondary institutions …

Fostering Nationalism: Education As A Political Tool In India And Pakistan, Ashot Khachaturyan Apr 2026

Fostering Nationalism: Education As A Political Tool In India And Pakistan, Ashot Khachaturyan

Undergraduate Research Symposium Podium Presentations

Education is regarded globally as a necessity for the youth to develop intellectually, emotionally, and socially. In developing countries around the world, like India and Pakistan, the quality of education, as well as the foundations of the curricula, are subject to cultural ties that promote ideologies of strong national identity. This paper aims to highlight the extent to which education, the most critical aspect of a child’s development, is used as a political tool in India and Pakistan. Analyzing existing research and journals, the reformations of Indian and Pakistani education to drive interpersonal conflicts will be explored, focusing on the …

Culturally-Responsive Schooling Of Native American Students: A Case-Study Of Oklahoma’S U.S. History Curriculum, Lorelani Riley Ladislao Apr 2026

Culturally-Responsive Schooling Of Native American Students: A Case-Study Of Oklahoma’S U.S. History Curriculum, Lorelani Riley Ladislao

Undergraduate Research Symposium Podium Presentations

For generations, formal schooling has been utilized as a tool for colonization and assimilation, resulting in lasting negative impacts on Native Americans. According to the National Center for Education Statistics (2020), Oklahoma public schools serve the second largest proportion of American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) students in the United States, making this context critical for understanding how contemporary education practices are impacting Native students. Scholarly literature posits that culturally responsive schooling enhances academic outcomes and helps combat historical injustices in marginalized communities. In alignment, the Diné Institute for Navajo Nation Educators (DINÉ) created a tool for assessing cultural responsiveness …

Rural Vs. Non-Rural Higher Education Degree Attainment: A Study Of Higher Education In Nevada, Yiselle Olivas Ruiz Apr 2026

Rural Vs. Non-Rural Higher Education Degree Attainment: A Study Of Higher Education In Nevada, Yiselle Olivas Ruiz

Undergraduate Research Symposium Podium Presentations

Historically, rural students attend four-year higher education institutions at lower rates than their urban peers. Similarly, they also obtain post-secondary degrees at lower rates. This paper examines the state of rural education in Nevada to illuminate disparities in academic outcomes between rural and non-rural students, particularly college degree attainment. The results show that, despite virtually equal high school graduation rates for rural and urban students, rural students face more obstacles to obtaining a college degree. The findings highlight the implications of Nevada’s recent K-12 funding formula change to a Pupil-Centered Funding Plan (PCFP) on college preparedness. Rural students’ academic experiences …

Our Stories: Black Parents’ Experiences At K-12 Predominantly White Institutions, Jason Thompson Apr 2026

Our Stories: Black Parents’ Experiences At K-12 Predominantly White Institutions, Jason Thompson

Dissertations

Black parents of Black children attending K–12 predominantly White institutions (PWIs) often experience stress as they navigate school environments where they may be perceived as uninterested, combative, or “token” members of the school community. These deficit-based perceptions can cause Black parents to limit school interactions, question whether their perspectives will be valued, and develop distrust toward school personnel. Although research has examined Black students’ experiences in PWIs, fewer qualitative studies have centered on Black parents’ stories. Capturing these experiences in parents’ own words helps challenge harmful stereotypes and offers schools, especially school counselors, deeper insight into strengthening relationships with Black …

Challenging Implicit Racial Bias In Teacher Preparation: A Critical Race Theory Approach Using Counterstories, Delaney Ingbretson, Abigail Den Bleyker Apr 2026

Challenging Implicit Racial Bias In Teacher Preparation: A Critical Race Theory Approach Using Counterstories, Delaney Ingbretson, Abigail Den Bleyker

25th Annual A. Paul and Carol C. Schaap Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2026)

This project examines the potential of counterstorytelling as a tool to disrupt implicit racial bias among pre-service teachers during the early stages of teacher preparation. Existing research consistently demonstrates that educators’ implicit attitudes influence expectations, disciplinary decisions, and interpretations of student behavior, often reinforcing racial inequities within educational systems. Because teachers play a critical role in shaping students’ academic achievement and social development, identifying strategies that address bias before educators enter the classroom is especially important.

Grounded in Critical Race Theory (CRT), this study investigates whether exposure to counterstories, narratives authored by people of color that challenge dominant racial ideologies. …

Evaluating Measurement Invariance Frameworks: A Comparison Of Mg-Cfa, Alignment Optimization, & Bayesian Approximate Measurement Invariance Using The Brigham Young University Counseling And Psychological Services Client Satisfaction Survey, Heidi Lula Lindsey Apr 2026

Evaluating Measurement Invariance Frameworks: A Comparison Of Mg-Cfa, Alignment Optimization, & Bayesian Approximate Measurement Invariance Using The Brigham Young University Counseling And Psychological Services Client Satisfaction Survey, Heidi Lula Lindsey

Theses and Dissertations

Researchers must establish measurement invariance (MI) before comparing latent constructs across groups to ensure construct validity. However, traditional multi-group confirmatory factor analysis (MG-CFA) may impose overly strict equality constraints in applied settings. Alternative MI frameworks are less familiar to researchers, which limits their use. This study compares MG-CFA, alignment optimization (AO), and Bayesian approximate measurement invariance (BAMI) using archival data from the Brigham Young University Counseling and Psychological Services Client Satisfaction Survey (N = 1,278). Participants completed an exit survey after receiving individual (n = 1,063), couple (n = 83), or group (n = 132) therapy, answering 16 five-point Likert …

National E-Criteria In Finnish Higher Education: A Tpack-Informed Policy Analysis, Ejike Okonkwo

Essays in Education

Responding to calls for a deeper understanding of contextual factors shaping learning, this paper examines the Digivisio 2030 e-criteria, a recently introduced national higher education quality framework designed to enhance digital pedagogy. Document analysis was used to examine five key features of the e-criteria: research-based, modularity, diversity, accessibility, and availability. The findings reveal that the e-criteria function as structural enablers, offering non-prescriptive guidelines that support reliable and user-friendly digital environments, flexible course design, inclusive teaching practices, equitable access to learning resources, and ongoing reflection on pedagogical processes. These findings are interpreted through a deductive approach using the Technological, Pedagogical, and …
