Utilizing A School Garden To Promote Ecoliteracy In Elementary Aged Children, Kelsie Murphy Apr 2023

Utilizing A School Garden To Promote Ecoliteracy In Elementary Aged Children, Kelsie Murphy

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Environmental education is a key component to building ecoliteracy in childhood. Due to the current climate crisis, developing a sense of ecoliteracy in the next generation is essential to slowing the effects of climate change. When students are given the opportunity to interact with nature on a regular basis, the connection between humans and their environment becomes that much stronger. Unfortunately, in the current public education system, little to no importance is placed on teaching science, let alone environmental science. A school garden offers an opportunity to provide students with more outdoor learning opportunities. This capstone uses a combination of …

Settings that differ from the typical four-walled classroom have increased due to the recognition of nature-based learning from educators and researchers. With a strong focus on the rise in nature-based preschools, we see a lack of accessibility to quality experiences in nature-based programming for infants and toddlers. Through this project, I wanted to answer the question: how can an infant/toddler program designed to explore the benefits of nature-based learning reach San Antonio, TX families when created by a nature-based zoo preschool? To answer the research question, I explore resources highlighting key components in infant and toddler development, nature-based learning benefits, …

Supporting Play In The Preschool Classroom With Visuals, Jessica Luetkemeier

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

Early childhood classrooms in the United States look very different today than they did a decade ago. There are a number of reasons why this changing portrait is the case; however, students entering preschool classrooms today are coming to school with less social and academic skills than in the past. Preschool teachers are feeling the pressure to have students “school ready” while also implementing developmentally appropriate practices. After surveying the research around challenges incorporating play in preschool classroom’s today, this school improvement plan suggests how to justify and support play in the preschool classroom using visuals, such as play scripts.
